Hi All,

I have completed filling out my coursework but am going over everything before submitting. One question that keeps popping up is what technically qualifies as a lab and what doesn't? I went to Univ. of Michigan-Ann Arbor where a lot of classes had what were called 'discussion sections' that often incorporated quizzes, papers, assignments etc. separate from lecture. However, these grades were then added to your lecture grade to make one overall grade for both 3 and 4 credit classes. If these discussion sections were in psych, bio, and stats courses, do you need to list it as a lecture and lab or is AMCAS fine with the overall grade being denoted as solely lecture based? I understand that this doesn't apply to the hard-and-fast pre-med courses (bio, gen chem, physics, orgo), I'm just trying to figure out how to navigate through the grey areas of the application.

I'm pretty sure what you're referring to are recitations and I'm also pretty sure those are lecture and definitely not lab. Do you sign up for lecture and lab separately? If so, when you sign up for lecture, do you sign up for a discussion section at the same time?

I submitted my application with only the classes I knew for sure were labs and didn't worry about the others. I'm still not sure why AMCAS doesn't offer a service to fill out classes for you for a small fee like AACOMAS does.

I'm also confused regarding entering courses with labs:

If I took a course that has a lab but I did not take the lab, do I still name it as "Course and Lab" or just "Course"?
I swear I read somewhere that as long as the course has a lab associated with it, you must name it as "Course and Lab" and check "Combined Lecture and Lab" even if you did not end up taking the lab. Is that true?

If you didn't take a lab, you shouldn't check that you did. Put down whatever it says your transcript says you took.

Is research for credit considered "lab only" even if it was something in the social sciences?

Why would it be anything else? 😛 Unless you attended a class as part of your lab, it's lab only. My only research was in the social sciences.
