My teacher is out of the country and told us that someone else will be uploading our final semester grades. However, I think that there might be a mistake. Obviously I would need to e-mail my professor about it, but I don't want to sound greedy because I was given an A. However, please listen to the rest of my story... my grade most likely should have been an A+. Before I write further, I know some of you might think this is ridiculous, but hey if I deserved it then that is what I should get, right? The differences between a "+" and a "-" can make a big difference (i.e. 3.3 vs 3.7). We are also applying to dental school, one of the hardest programs to get into.

Anyways, with the extra credit and all my grades averaged up, I should have around a 98 out of 100, which is an A+ for our school. And YES this teacher gives A+'s. However, it doesn't specify on her syllabus what differentiates between the "+" and "-" (our school just has a suggested policy, but it is up to the professors choice on what dictates what). I have a friend who received an A+ last semester with the same teacher and class with a 95! Another thing is that she is one of my letters of rec. How do I politely e-mail her about this? I don't want to come off greedy... I would really appreciate any input. Thanks in advance.

Just email and ask to have your grade re-examined.

Mistakes happen. Same thing happened to me before where everyone had their grade shifted one row down. So I guess I got the grade of the person above me on the excel sheet and the person below me got my grade. Something like that.

Anyway, it doesn't hurt to try. It's not like she's gonna say "oh, your 98 is now an A- because you're greedy." Good luck though.

yea i just email the prof... so jealous that your school does A+s

A +/- can make a difference of .4 in the gpa? Is this a new math?

AADSAS does not include A+. The highest GPA is 4.0, which is an A. I believe AADSAS turns all A+ to A when doing the calculation, even with the +/- grading scheme. That is what happened to my grades, my school had an A+ system, giving you the potential to get a 4.3 GPA if you got strait A+. It is a really stupid system IMO.

Thank you both for answering my question.

Don't believe it's new math. B+ = 3.3 A- = 3.7. It has been like that for years... of course depends on the school though. For AADSAS, B+ = 3.33 and A- = 3.67. Watch the sig figs.

No, A+ is counted. You can not get higher than a 4.0 overall, however. Look at their website.

That's straight bull**** for those of us who don't go to colleges who offer them. I swear my non-science would be over 4.0 if that was the case. 🙄

I feel bad for ya. Can you maybe transfer?

Preaching to the choir.

But yeah, just email the professor kindly. As long as you don't come off as rude, I think he/she will understand.

Hah, no way I'd transfer for that reason alone. I love my current university and I'm doing just fine. It's just frustrating haha.

the difference between an A+ and an A is .3, not .4

Yes, but the doc was talking about the difference between a B+ and an A-, which is .4. However, with AADSAS it would be .34 between B+ and A- and .33 between A+ and an A. Regardless, I believe the point is made- there's a difference.

I don't know how much your professor can do at this point, especially if she is out of the country. Turning in final grades is very time sensitive, so she will have to respond and correct the grade (if necessary) within the next few days, otherwise it will be too late. It will definitely be best to email her right now or try to contact the person she left in charge.

She can always come back and change it. Just email now and ask for her to update you on what she finds. Wait 1-2 weeks and email again if she doesn't respond asking for an update.

Grades can be changed weeks after they've been submitted. Professor just gotta do extra paperwork.

It works both ways: An A at your school could be an A- at another...

But the main point stands that only some schools offer A+ when they are on the +/- system. All schools on the +/- system offer A-.
