Finally have good news!!

Wow...what a busy month it has been! I was scheduled for interviews at VCOM and OU-COM within 2 days of each other, so I arranged for my little students to have a substitute and made my reservations.

Set off for Blacksburg, made it to Cincinnati and stopped at my sister's house to double-check the weather. Ice storm in Virginia? I don't think so! So I e-mailed the school (only option on a Sunday) and told them I didn't feel comfortable continuing the drive. They were very polite and offered me several options for rescheduling.

Spent a couple of days with my sis and then went on to OU-COM. What a great day! The people there were all soooo nice (total opposite of how I felt that hellish day at IU). The interviews all went well and I felt like I'd really kicked some butt. The adcom meets at end of day and they send out letters on the following day. They said they would e-mail on Thursday, if accepted. Thursday came and went with no e-mail. Finally, on Saturday I got the snail mail letting me know that I was in!!! YEAH!!!!

I withdrew my app to VCOM because it is just too expensive and too far to move. Still have a few more apps open and I'm waiting to see how those turn out, but at least I know that I *will* be a doctor.

Anyway, I had a great Christmas present for my parents when I went home to Kentucky. And my son thinks it's just the greatest thing ever that mommy is going to be a doctor--as long as I don't stick needles in him!

Woo hoo!!! Yeah me!!!! LOL

Aaron: I did apply to PCSOM and still have not heard from them. This was a common question at OU-COM because I was born in Pikeville. I'd say "yes, I applied...haven't heard from them." And they all look stunned and say "You haven't heard anything?!?" LOL

Amy: I know...I was looking forward to "knowing" someone when I started school! But, gosh..my in-laws are already giving me grief over the possibility of moving to Ohio. Apparently, taking my children out of the area will "kill" my father-in-law. She even offerred to take care of the family so I could go to school and they wouldn't have to move "in case things don't work out." The guilt along with the $29k price tag was just too high!!

When did you send in your secondary to Pikeville? I mailed my primary AACOMAS application in early June, but did not receive my secondary until almost mid October. About two weeks after I mailed in my secondary to Pikeville, they scheduled me for an interview on December 6.

Pikeville only interviews once a month, on a Saturday. There was supposed to be about 30 applicants the day of my interview, but do to inclement weather, several could not attend. They let me know about 4 days later that I was accepted.

hey Willow, I just wanted to add my congratulations to you for your hard-earned achievement. I know you have been waiting quite a while in limbo, and I'm glad you can now relax a little. by the way, I just wanted to make sure you are aware of the five year contract you have to sign to attend OUCOM. pm me if not, k.

Yep, I know all about the contract. I had to sign something about it before I could even get considered for an interview.

I talked to the Dean of Admissions before I left on interview day and discovered that it is not as difficult to fulfill as I had previously thought. They've made some changes to it this year. As always, doing your residency at a CORE hospital will count toward it. But now, if you do your residency in family med, internal med, or peds at a CORE hospital, your 3-yr residency will count as a completion of your commitment. Five years for the price of three!

Re: PCSOM--I didn't realize they only interview once a month, but my secondary has been complete since at least early November. I've finally relaxed a little on it, though. I suppose when they start moving out of the Appalachian area I'll hear something!
