My applications were finally mailed today (how can something be mailed on Sunday). Anyway, now I am very nervous as my MCAT is not something to be proud of. Just hoping for a miracle. Any motivation would be nice...:scared:

I believe that you should hope for the best but be prepared for the worst. I hope that everything works out for you this time. If it doesn't, remember that there are a lot of people who reapply and get in the second time. But, you never know what will happen until you try. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!!:luck: :luck: 🙂

Thanks for the reply, and it sounds like the realistic way to think, but motivation would still help. Maybe I can have a few days for wishful thinking? 🙂

Have you considered retaking the MCAT? You will be asked this in interviews and it is something you should consider.

with your science GPA it seems you may have some D's or F's or perhaps a ton of C's. Read the FAQ (in my signature below) regarding AACOMAS policy on retakes.

In my opinion you should be working to improve your application. You can update Adcoms via mail in your grades, MCAT scores, academic awards, etc. to improve your chances for this cycle. Have you visted any nearby schools?

You do have a shot this cycle but just trying to encourage you to be proactive in the admissions process.

Best wishes.

I do have several C's. No D's or F's. I'm currently in the post-bac program at PCOM-GA and doing well 3.5gpa. Do you think I should retake some of the science courses that I got C's in as well? These were in undergrad. Any my graduate gpa for physical therapy school is a 4.0. I am not taking the MCAT again this cycle because I truly don't have the time to study properly for it because of my current class schedule and we don't finish the program until May 2007. I don't want to run the risk of making the same score again or even a lower score.
I'm not quite sure what you mean by visiting any nearby schools. Do you mean for med. school or for retakes? Thank you very much for the advice.

Some schools offer school visits where you get a chance to meet the students, maybe the dean or admissions rep, etc. The Open House sticky might have some of that info:

http://forums.studentdoctor.net/showthread.php?t=305503

you applied to Lecom-B
http://www.lecom.edu/bradenton/OMAC_Oct_06.asp

I was not sure if you were currently in school due to your age. That helps.

I see that you are a current student at NYCOM. Do you think I stand any chance there?

with a 20 MCAT and a low GPA, I really feel that you should have waited till the next cycle, which would start only 6 months later at this point. I would have attempted to retake the MCAT and score atleast a 26 and try to retake those classes this spring semester to try and pull close to a 3.5. however, goodluck in the process, but at this point in the season, you are real late but it may still be possible to score something at Touro-Harlem and DCOM.

So, do you guys think I should retake the science courses that I made C's in rather than doing the post-bac program that I'm in now? I really feel like now I'm committed to the post-bac and it doesn't end until May 2007, then it may be too late to retake those classes again anyway. And where can I fit in really studying for the MCAT to have a good chance to pull it up? ANY advice is appreciated. Thanks again.

I believe DCOM would be a stretch due to their heavy applicant pool and they are on pace to fill their classes like other good schools...no offense but Touro-Harlem is the best bet for all the late applications!

After making that post, I thought about it and also came up with a similar conclusion ... at this point, DCOM may still squeeze in interviews at this point, but they will most likely screen for stats and location, and no offense either, but your stats dont measure up. good luck at Harlem, which is no assurance of acceptance by any means.

LOL me 2. I came across that somewhere, so thought it would be k to bring it up. Neways where you applying?

I'm applying to NSUCOM (interview: 2/15), PCOM-GA (interview: 1/17), DMU (awaiting on interview invite), LECOM-BR (pre-interview hold) as DO schools ...

my MD schools: UAB and Meharry. UAB=instate, Meharry=TN, close to home and both are reviewing my file.

Where all did you apply?

Well i applied to a bunch of schools, i have interview offers, acceptances but at this point iam leaning toward DCOM. I absolutely love the school, however PCOM still remains my top choice. So as of now iam def going to DCOM but you never know! Why didn't you apply to DCOM...since you said you live in TN or nearby!

I live in AL ... and yes, i forgot to mention, I did apply to DCOM as well with an interview coming up.

I am leaning towards NSU or PCOM-GA, but I am also interested in DCOM, too .. and UAB trumps all, since its instate.

Where all did u apply to specifically and have been accepted at? just curious.

I'm reaaaaaaly getting tired of the whole: "I have a 10 on the MCAT and a 2.0 GPA waaaaahhhh can I get in?" threads.

Just work harder, or don't bother.

freakin hilarious, for once, someone in a pre-osteo forum has some common sense. i hate this "you still have a chance bullsh*t ... and ... its better now than never .. if u dont apply, you wont know if u have a chance bs!" ... gah, annoying.

I thought people on here would be more helpful, not hateful!🙁

there's alot of haters on this board (although i am not referring to anyone in this thread in particular).

the truth of the matter is you don't know if you could get in unless you apply. many DO schools will look past a bad past if your current work is strong, and you've had good life experiences. many people on this board can attest to this.

only you know how bad you want it. there is nothing wrong with having a plan B (whether it be entering a post-bacc, retaking classes or the MCAT), i think you do need to have a positive outlook.

i saw your profile before you took it down, and it seems you have alot of other really great stuff on your application which may help you out. the only negative is how late you are applying. our apps have a lot of similarities, and i havent lost hope yet, so you shouldnt either!

good luck! :luck:

im not hating, if i were hating, it'd be as if i was jealous and trying to knock someone down with stellar stats who is attempting to apply at this point.

this is not the case, and even as DO schools do look at the holistic applicant, bad stats are bad stats ... even if this person had a good GPA id say he or she stood a decent chance, but even that isnt in his/her favor. this sugar-coating business is what gives these systems and DO schools lotsa $, because of the naivete of many pre-meds. Should you pursue medicine? Sure. At this point, I'd say no. You have a better chance of getting in if you apply EARLY next season (in only 6 months or so), and boost up that MCAT and GPA at the very least. I am only keepin it real, because you can have all the false hope from these guys all day long, at the end of the day, its not up to them nor I, its up to the adcoms at DO schools. That's why I say, if you wish to still apply, go for Touro, as that may be your best chance if at all .. and even then, fact is, youre still not guaranteed anything. I would have saved all this $ and tried for 2008 personally. If this is called hating, then whatever, que sera sera.

yay to Pink Martini

Retake C's in any of your pre-reqs and even in any science class. This is the quickest way to bring up your GPA. What kind of post-bacc are you in? Is it one with only upper level sciences?

Take the MCAT again and if you don't have time to study for it by April or May, then put it off until next spring and apply in 2008. Doing it right is way more important than doing it now.

Sorry samkell! I agree that I was a little too honest there.

But that's just it! I was honest. You have a lot of work ahead of you if you want to be accepted into a good Osteopathic program. And not to be cliche, but if you want it bad enough, you can do it. We've all had to go thru ups and downs in order to get accepted, and trust me, you'll be no different.

Well.... I would wish you luck but truthfully, in my experience, luck has nothing to do with it. Just believe in yourself and work hard!!!

Thanks everyone. I do appreciate the reality check. I really don't expect to get in this year, and I'm only applying since I'm in the post-bac program at PCOM-Ga, so if I do get lucky, it will probably be there.
In defense of the science gpa, my undergrad shows an upward trend, I had a 4.0 in the undergrad post bac sciences that I took, and I had a 4.0 GPA in the master's program in physical therapy that I completed. Only problem with that is that physical therapy courses are not counted in the science gpa.
My problem is with inorganic chem and physics. I appreciate and will take all the advice and retake these classes. Not only will it help my gpa, but hopefully, it will help my mcat score, if I do end up having to take that blasted exam again. Sorry for being sensitive- its just been a long road, and looks like it will be longer.😳

We're all cranky at this stage in the game. Just a word of caution. Med schools don't give your graduate GPA much weight b/c a lot of grad programs are notorious for grade inflation. Unless you're in a Special Master's Program (which are designed for people who need to take med school courses to prove they can succeed in med school) like Georgetown's, your grad school GPA will likely be dismissed, unfortunately.

Retake Gen Chem and Physics if that's where the problem is. Make sure you take them with a good professor and bust your ass to learn the material.

i specifially said i wasn't picking on anyone in this particular thread for "hating". so dr inviz, and anyone else i may have offended, this was not meant for you. it was more of a generalization of many of the negative people on the board.

i think everyone needs to learn for themselves whether or not they can get in. the OP has already sent out primaries, so telling them not to apply really means nothing. if we never try, we'll never know.

i didnt post to start a fight, just to try to lend some comforting words to a peer. i am sure the OP knows her stats aren't great, and i wasn't trying to sugar coat, instead trying to praise the all the great stuff on the app.

i agree your best bet is probably at PCOM-GA, i am in the masters program at NYIT, which is why i am only looking towards NYCOM.

anyways, enough blabber, good luck! :luck:

Sorry you are feeling badly. Try not to let it get to you. Remember, whether or not you get in this time does not mean you are any more or less of a person. I think the biggest thing you have against you is the lateness of your application. I did look at your profile and I think you applied to Touro-NY and you may get in there since they are so much later with their deadlines. If you don't get in this year, retake some of the classes, retake the MCAT, and try again next year. If you really want to become a doctor and you believe in yourself then you will be able to accomplish your dream. My stats are actually not that great either, but I had strong ECs, LORs, and the fact that I am a mother that helped my application. It absolutely is true that you don't know until you try. The osteopathic schools really do look at the whole person, so maybe everything will work out for you. As I posted before, hope for the best and be prepared for the worst. Don't get discouraged and have confidence that everything will work out in the end and it will. Good luck to you!!!:luck: 😀

Thanks guys. We'll see what happens.🙂
