I will be attending Jefferson's DPT program beginning Fall 2013. I am new to financial aid and was wondering if I should begin applying now or wait until sometime in the summer/end of Spring 2013 semester.

Also, will all of this be done through FASFA only, or will I apply through Jefferson?\

Thanks!

just fill out your fafsa and send it to your school now , update it when u do your taxes, and then call and talk to ur schools financial aid office for example if you made alot $ for 2012 i believe it could affect your aid, but they can help with that. they will help you get as much money as u need for school. that's just the way i'd do it.

Do FAFSA ASAP. Then update when you have your final 2012 tax info. School FA dept should follow up w/ instructions. I had to do campus papers at my school, request loans, different forms for grad plus. no free money from the gov. ,unless your school has scholarships for grad students. Start putting a budget together so you know how much you will need for tuit, / living expenses, etc. There will be promisary notes and other stuff to sign off on once a loan is approved through fed gov. Sure each campus has their process. I'd contact FA directly initially to learn of their time schedules, and processes. you'll need the school code for FAFSA....

I'll have the money to pay for tuition on my own for the first year and maybe the 2nd year. Should I wait to file for Financial Aid since I'll have the money for the first year? Also I've never gotten Financial Aid before but my understanding is that it is free money (money that I am not borrowing and do not have to pay back), is that not true?

Financial aid from FAFSA is not free money. It is need-based loans granted from the government. Still gotta pay them back, there's no such thing as free money these days 😉

My father (an accountant if that means anything) says that there is a financial aid in which you do not have to pay back. I'm not sure if he is right or wrong I have to do research. Or maybe things have changed since he last checked. I never received financial aid before.

You can get grants with FAFSA but as I understand it that is only for undergrads. Everything else is a loan. Scholarships are available outside of FAFSA

I think what you are referring to are grants, which Graduate Students often do not qualify for or receive. That is usually reserved for undergraduate students.

This sounds like a great question for your school's financial aid office 🙂
