I posted this on the pre-pharm forum a while ago, but didn't get any answer so here goes. If you classified as "undergrad" in the pharmacy school because you don't have a bachelor degree, will your aid determined based on the "undergrad" cost of the university or the pharmacy student's cost? The cost of my pharmacy school is about 20K/year, but the cost for undergrad of that school is only 15K/year. I'm worrying where I'm gonna come up with 5K.

Whether you have a Bachelor's degree or not, you are still classified as a grad student since you'll be enrolled in a professional school. Thus, your cost will be 20K.

yea, but my school specifically told me to put myself down as undergrad in the FAFSA.

Oh, that's weird. Well since your school told you to apply for FAFSA as an undergrad, then they probably have you enrolled as an Undergrad as well, and so your cost should be 15K. I would call up the financial aid office and clarify though. Are you enrolled in a 5 or 6 year pharmacy program where the first 2 yrs are pre-reqs? Or are you going to start as a first year pharmacy student?

I'm gonna start as first year pharmacy student (PY1). I'm already done my undergrad at another school. I think they want to classified me as undergrad because you can get grants as undergrad.

It all depends on what school you go to. At South, I am a grad student all the way thru the program. At Nova, I am a grad student at P3, P4 level.

Man.

Why couldn't UIC do that? =/

Well, at my pharmacy school (UNC), they said that if you have a bachelor degree, then you would be classified as grad your whole 4 years at pharmacy school, but if you don't have a bachelor degree, then your first 2 years will be classified as undergrad.

I wish my school did that 🙂
I think you will get grants from FAFSA based on 15K as your fees. But you can always get additional federal loans if you need more $$$ and those will probably be subsidized (0% interest).
I wonder what the maximum amount we can get as grants is. I think subsidized loans' max is about 38K?
