We are eligible for around $50K in Stafford sub and unsub loans. How often do people with families receive an extra amount in Perkins or any other grant to supplement tuition that is more than Stafford can award? Typically, do students who pay more than the Stafford amount in tuition have to use the GRADplus loan or private? Does anyone have the exact amount awarded for 2010-2011 Stafford sub and unsub loans? I have see $189K-224K. Which is correct?

I dont have the exact numbers for you but I can say most students I think offset the rest with GRADplus loans. Also, Im not sure if you are saying this but just in case, you only receive loans for yourself, doesnt matter if you have children or married or whatever. Its only for your education and your expenses. Not very fair for people who have families but Im sure thats accurate.

technically, yeah. they dont fund ur fam, so u cant use that as a way to get more loan money or grants. whether u can provide for them off of the amount offered is a different question, the amt u can take out with the grad plus and stafford is fairly school specific i think.

unless u have outside help, every student will have to tap into gradplus loans. Private loans are for if u surpass the amt of gradplus available.

gradplus interest rates are comparable, just slightly higher, than stafford rates.

the numbers ive heard from most schools is something like 8k in subsidized staffords, 25 (??) unsubsidized staffords, and the rest in gradplus...

one shcools info does say "financial aid is to help with the cost of attendance, not living expenses for the student's family except for documented child care expenses"--that amt is a pre-set amount decided by their office
