Do schools typically provide this if you are a financially disadvantaged applicant? Is it more common for specific groups the school wants to attract? How does this work

I know some schools provide hotel rooms and transfers to the school, but I haven't heard of airfare or other travel expenses being covered.

Yes, I've had friends who had schools cover for flights to come to second look. Tbf, they were top schools with really good fin aid (Stanford, HMS, Hopkins), and the students were URM & low-income. I think if you're a low-income applicant, it would not hurt to reach out to schools & ask.
