For all of you who are going through the appliction process right now, how did you stand financially this time a year ago? Did you know about how much you were going to spend? Did you start sending out "please send your donations to the broke premeder" cards to your family/friends? Perhaps pick up a second job? Start selling you plasma like its going out of style? :D :D Thanks for the input everyone - Peace

hehe I had NO idea how much money this would cost. Luckily I just turned 21, so I got to spend my birthday money on med school apps, and I stopped going shopping :( .

The best was when my grandma sent me a check for christmas and I gave it to Mt. Sinai for Hanukah :)

Now I owe $1500+ on credit card bills.....gracias to mami, papi y las abuelas por su dinero!!!!!!

This is going to be completely depressing. I funded my med school applications and travelling using graduation money and my job money. Keep in mind, I am living at home for the year, but being a lab tech doesn't pay that much!

AMCAS= $540 (14 schools)
Secondaries= $1035
Non-AMCAS= $75
Postage= $75 (I mailed all of my secondaries priority and tracked them. Plus with all of the AMCAS screw ups, I had to send updates and transcripts, etc.
Travel expenses= $400 (keep in mind I stayed with boyfriend or his family or friends for all of my interviews, so there are no hotel costs here.)
Deposits= $400 (two of which are refundable and I have requested back, but do you really think I will get them back anytime soon?)

GRAND TOTAL= $2525

So, you can adjust your expected expenses for next year!

I'm up to about $7500, including MCAT prep class, AMCAS, secondaries, postage, letter service fees, additional transcripts, interview suit, airfare + change fees after coordinating interviews, gifts for student hosts, taxis, shuttles, etc. I've been on 6 interviews, with 8 more scheduled (some of the airfare is already paid), so the total is still going up. Since I always stay with student hosts, this total includes only one hotel room for one night (a regional interview). Luckily my parents can afford this.

Ya know things weren't looking too bad until I got to your post SMW. Holy cow <img border="0" alt="[Wowie]" title="" src="graemlins/wowie.gif" /> My jaw just about fell like my little blue graemlin. That is like a years tuition at some schools. Thanks for the info everyone.....anyone else?
Peace

MCAT= $320 (I took 'em twice)
Kaplan= $1200
AMCAS= $540 (14 schools)
Secondaries= $1035
Non-AMCAS= $75
Postage= $75 (I mailed all of my secondaries priority and tracked them. Plus with all of the AMCAS screw ups, I had to send updates and transcripts, etc.
Suit= $450 (I bought two suits. Both had a jacket, pants, and skirt.)
Travel expenses= $400 (keep in mind I stayed with boyfriend or his family or friends for all of my interviews, so there are no hotel costs here.)
Deposits= $400 (two of which are refundable and I have requested back, but do you really think I will get them back anytime soon?)

GRAND TOTAL= $4495

I think I got it now. I did send my boyfriend's parents two thank you gifts for having me there since the two times I stayed there were either on a Jewish holiday or another holiday. And, I took my friend out to dinner, but it would be too depressing to really figure out how much I've spent!
