My significant other and I are in a bit of a predicament, and I'm hoping to learn more about the job search in radiology from some people who have gone through it.

He is currently in his first year of a two year neuroradiology fellowship, which he will complete in Spring of 2018. I am in my fourth year of medical school, and I am applying for residency in diagnostic radiology. I will match in March of 2017.

So how do we end up in the same place? It's too early for him to get a job offer for 2018, so it's not like I can plan my rank list around him. He would prefer an academic job, but is willing to do private practice for a few years if we can be in the same place during my residency. Am I unreasonably optimistic to think that he will be able to find a job in the same city as my residency program? Obviously it means that it may not be the job with the best pay and vacation package, but is it reasonably possible?

I can share more details about our situation and training if it helps. Thanks!

He can find a job in the same city as your residency program BUT the quality of job may not be good. For example, for a neuroradiologist it is not that hard to find a night job or evening shift job within 40-50 miles of even big desirable areas.

However, it is difficult to find an academic job in a specific location unless he is a fellow in the same location or the location is not a desirable location.

One more thing. Once he leaves fellowship for a few years of private practice job, it is very hard to go back to academics.

In summary, don't worry about it to much. You have to understand that when both couples are professionals it is hard for both of them to find their dream job close to each other unless both of them are family physicians or ER doctors.

tsk tsk McNCheese you're double dipping with AM and SDN!...1st question to answer, how serious are you guys? are you engaged? In other words is the relationship established enough to make compromises regarding career decisions?..2nd question, where will you be doing fellowship? In other words will you be revisiting this issue 5 years from now...Given the current state of the job market (improving but not wide open), 1st figure out where he will have the best chances to land an ideal job and then you find the best programs in that area
