How do people typically do this so as to save the most money? Airbnb? Craigslist? Dedicated websites/Facebook groups? I'm gonna be doing at least 3 aways and I'm hoping to spend not more than 1k per rotation on housing if that's possible.

One of the places I did an away at had dorm style housing on campus (forget if it cost money or not), the other I asked the coordinator and got a list of people who had short term space to rent (mostly residents in various specialties).

Half the places gave me housing for free. One I used AirBnb, one I emailed the coordinator and residents offered to stay with them for fairly cheap. I believe there's two sites specifically aimed at medical students/residents rotating looking for places, but they were absurdly expensive, literal price gouging.

I'm glad you posted this...I remember that a member posted that she helped start this group (or a similar one) but I couldn't remember the name.

Also, there are often travel nurses or other residents who have sub-lets and there is often a place where they post info. Perhaps someone can check the bulletin board or "electronic" bulletin board at the facility where you are going.

People like subletting to residents - they are usually quiet responsible, working a lot and sleeping when not working.

I initially searched on rotating room, but got a great deal on airbnb (<700 for the month). Good luck!

Rotating room, student housing from the med school, or facebook pages for med students at that school looking to sublet are usually the most convenient and cheapest options

Get a bike or a razor scooter?
Bike, eBike (electric motor bike) these are pretty great, electric scooter.

Car2Go, ZipCar or other car-sharing services.

Turo is a new consumer to consumer car rental where you rent another person's private vehicle. You might be able to find one where the person is amenable to you using it whenever you have a shift.

Extended stay hotels... are comfortable and better priced than regular hotels. Call a couple, ask to talk with the hotel manager and negotiate the rate. Never pay the rack rate!

Your budget will be easier in some parts of the country than others. In the coastal cities, you can forget about it. You can always find deals on rotatingroom or similar but you also have to be mindful that many are not the best/very comfortable. Obviously you'll be spending a lot of time at the hospital so it's all a matter of what you're willing to tolerate. Proximity to the hospital is probably more important to you and in most places, that won't be the cheapest area. You don't want to be commuting a long way if you're in a surgical rotation and you also don't want to be in a sketchy area because you'll be around outside when nobody else will be outside.

I would think about your away rotations as an investment in your future and do what is necessary to help yourself perform as well as possible when you're in the hospital.
