Thought I'd make a dedicated thread for Firecracker as used for Step 2. Here's the Official Firecracker Step 1 thread.

At the very least, this will be a "diary" of my periodically updated thoughts going through using it. However, I think it would be far more useful if as many people as possible chimed in with their experiences.

Here are some threads with some existing user input:
From 2014: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/anyone-used-firecracker-for-step-2.1063595/
From 2013: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/using-firecracker-for-step-2.1003719/
From 2012: http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/gunner-training-firecracker-for-step-2.963692/

I'll be using FC on "Legendary Mode" primarily as an adjunct and background study tool, which will take lower priority than traditional shelf/Step 2 advice. The resources I'll primarily be using are found here. I'll also be using UWorld concurrently with each shelf and for Step 2.

Full disclosure: I became an editor for Step 1 content with Firecracker shortly after beginning my use of the Step 2 Firecracker content. I am not a representative of Firecracker, and nothing I say represents the views or policies of Firecracker.

May 2015 edit: To sum up my experience all-in-all with Step 2 FC, I used it for the first 2-3 months of MS3 (mid-2014) sparingly, then dropped it in favor of tried-and-true resources which are already too abundant to do all of. Some rotations it's too hard to even do all of the UWorld of, let alone 1-2 passes of the highest-recommended text. My current recommendation is to consider trying it if you have time remaining from an existing subscription already, but otherwise to see how you fare keeping up with MS3 studying without it first.

Some initial comments after about 1 month of use:
-Honestly, what they have now is pretty crappy. The biggest thing I'd say is that the topics mostly seem like they grabbed Step 1 topics and mashed it in with Step 2 review books with minimal synthesis of a new unique product. I'm also "never see again"ing like crazy compared to Step 1, partly due to poor repeating Q's but mostly due to low-yield or "duh" info. There are also old problems like using acronyms in the repeating Q's so you don't know what they're referring to and repeating Q's on low-yield stuff.
-A good thing about the current product is that you can feel pretty secure that the information you need to know is there. It's more of a problem of wading through the significant amount of unimportant stuff than not having any good stuff there.
-Why I would still recommend it if you really liked it for Step 1: They've been actively going through and making huge strides in updates. These new topics are worth the money. They live up to the Step 1 standard in my opinion so far. They have a weekly blog post where they post the topics they've updated. Their goal is to completely revamp the Step 2 content by the end of July (ehhh seems unlikely). You could actually buy the product now and simply let the blog posts lead the way in the topics you flag -- it's enough work to keep you busy per week.

For those on the fence about Firecracker or who bought it and didn't like it in Step 2, I don't think anything's going to change your mind about their Step 2 product. My advice at this time would be to hold off.

For those interested in jumping in and who didn't use it for Step 1: Consider following their blog and doing only those topics as they update the content.

Further thoughts 1 week later...

I've had the chance to use FC more since the elective rotation I'm on now is very lax. One big difference between FC for Step 1 and Step 2 is the severe reduction in study time you have. It's difficult enough during MS1-2 to keep track of repeated Q's and flag new topics daily, but I'm already having a tough time with just 10% completed here. The biggest thing is having 40+ hours/week (on an easy rotation) eaten up by your rotation. You don't have the flexibility to have FC substitute for study time if you wanted anymore. When there are other tried-and-true study resources to use before FC, you may have to make more sacrifices in your studying. That was something I didn't foresee.

What I said earlier about marking far more repeating Q's as "never see again" has really been confirmed. For the past several hundreds of repeating Q's I've done, I've marked somewhere between 20-25% of all questions as "never see again". This is incredible to me, and means that a significant portion of my time here is down the drain dismissing useless questions. They're not useless as in having zero value, but they're useless to an MS3 that remembers a significant portion of Step 1 material (and there are also some purely crappy Q's in there too). It seems possible that those who rocked Step 1 will have a decreased need for a study tool like FC, due to the nature of any Step 2 resource covering a significant amount of information that Step 1 resources cover.

To be fair, most of my flagged topics at this point are Psych, which hasn't been subject to the updates that the editors have been doing. It's also a subject full of trimmable fat in most review books, in my opinion.

On a more positive note, I've gone through several IM topics that are fresh from editor updates and have found that I already know a significant amount of the material in Step 2 review books that cover the concepts I've flagged in FC. That's the whole point of FC in my opinion -- to hammer stuff down before your dedicated study period. So that's good at least.

I use it usually at the beginning of rotations to get a good baseline of knowledge to help me on rotations. But other than that, it's usefulness is limited. It was great for step 1 but the step 2 material is lacking.

Some topics are nonspecific (for example, it tells you to use BB, Aspirin, PCI, etc to treat STEMI but it doesn't tell you what order to perform these in. Asa first then PCI then the other things)
Some topics are not updated yet. (DSM V like the types of schizophrenia, alcohol use disorder etc)
Other questions are just not useful and cover things meant for step 1 (pathology findings in diabetic nephropathy)

All it all, outside my mentioned use for rotations (mainly because I had already paid for it) I am not actually using it for step 2.

I have been using it for about two weeks. I like to flag things I am reminded of during rounds and morning conferences. Its been particularly helpful for keeping track of "best step in management" type of info (a.k.a subjects that do not require abstract thinking and are purely memorization-based).

One thing I have noticed is that the STEP 2 cards are better organized than those for STEP 1. I usually read each card while simultaneously checking Pocket Medicine and/or Step Up to Medicine, and so far most cards have accurate, up-to-date info.

So far my daily quiz is made of ~40 questions. You can be done with it in <1 hour. One way to prevent FC from taking too much of your time is to simply use the "Never See Again" feature for questions that you already know well. For instance, I flagged one of the COPD cards and one of the questions was "what is the functional residual capacity?" Obviously I do not need to see that question again after months of studying for STEP 1.

A reminder--they're updating topics right now. Apparently, if you flag a Step 2 topic and it gets updated, the new questions don't appear in your queue. If any of you are beginning to use it for Step 2, be sure to begin with the most recently updated topics:

So far there have been ONLY 3 blog posts about updated step 2 content. According to the blog, the last Step 2 content update was June 27 (this was ONLY the third update). Why hasn't there been anymore updated content for the past 2 weeks?

According to the blog, "Our Step 2 product will be completely upgraded by the end of July." Are they going to fail to deliver on this promise? If not, when will it be done? August, December, January, never?

Dude, I dunno. I asked them a week or so ago when the next weekly blog post would be, but no response yet...

I see they're still actively updating Step 2 content according to the update list on the actual site, but I'm not sure if these are just grammatical things or something, or if they're doing the same type of updates as they're doing to the topics they blog about.

Either way, I certainly wouldn't hold your breath for the end of July. Maybe August/September?

did anyone get the email about submitting your score to get a free 2 months? It's tempting b.c. my subscription is about to expire, but it is sorta creepy that we have to email our actual score report right?

I have Family as my first rotation. Which topics should I flag?

Probably some IM stuff. Big-ticket things in Cardio and Endocrine like diabetes and HTN.

Hm...yeah, tempting. It makes sense from FC's point of view. Not sure what I'll do...already a little concerned about the identity footprint I leave on SDN haha.

I just sent it in, but hid the USMLE ID, but now after reading this it makes me think I should have hid my name as well. I just assumed they were going to say it had to be visible or else there would be no way for them to be certain we aren't sending in a random score report :/

Any new thoughts on FC? They just sent another email saying this is the last sale they're having for the 2014-2015 school year, so now I can actually debate whether or not I want to invest in it after receiving my results. Looks like I have 24 hours to read up on 3rd year.

Did you also see the thing about completing the survey in order to receive an additional free month?

http://blog.firecracker.me/2014/07/29/surveying-the-med-school-lifestyle/

Also, are you interested in continuing to review your flagged Step 1 content now that you've taken the test? If not, you could always create a new account to receive the free month and start your Step 2 content on a clean slate. This, plus the free month for completing the survey... Well, I'm sure you can add. On the other hand, if you're already going to get two free months on your existing account for sending in your score, I suppose it's a wash.

I'm not actually, but that would only give me 1 extra month by starting a new account. By sending in the score report and doing the survey they also sent out, that should give me 3 extra months now. Which if I was to purchase 9 months or a year on top of that, should set me up nicely through the CK exam.

Kirbymiester, what would be your stance after using it now for nearly a month. Is it worth taking advantage of the sale on 12+ months right now or are you actually using it a lot less than you expected? I was thinking it would be a good tool for studying in the few minutes you get every now and then during the day. I use Anki a lot but didn't see myself having much time to make cards during third year so I thought going with a pre-made card system that uses the repetition based tracking software would be a good idea. But flagging cards "never see again" all the time doesn't seem like its worth it.

Sure.

So I've only done FC for Psych and Internal Med now. So far, IM is far better. Not only am I flagging fewer questions as "never see again", but I'm really seeing benefit from using FC in my rotation. There have already been a couple random things that I've recalled (that other students haven't known) because of FC. Now, I haven't really used any other IM resources, so I can't really say how FC compares to other things, but the bottom line is that the updates they've been giving have been working. I'm also really early in IM, so it's too early to say what does and doesn't work. I did the Psych shelf, and FC didn't help too much...but that's more because Psych was very weird and only a couple of the many resources I used were helpful.

Oh and @taelvin, you're right about its utility using it in the few minutes randomly throughout the day. That's been pretty nice, especially in a distracting setting where you can't just whip out a book and concentrate on reading.

You can probably tell that I'm pretty hesitant to give a "yes" or "no" answer. I'm still feeling everything out slowly over here...not too sure what I would do in your shoes if I hadn't already purchased a full year of FC earlier.

lol not even close. sigh. i was pimped hardcore on vertigo yesterday--went to bank it, but it is no where to be found in fc.
Think I'm gonna ask for a refund monday. I paid for it a while ago bc of the "limited time offer sale". Then I waited till the end of July to use it thinking it'd be updated. Lame.

Let me know what they tell you. I was told that they should be finished by end of August. I think it was a bit overly ambitious of them to estimate it would take a month. I would rather they spend their time making sure it is a good update than rush through it. I wish their editors new more about the 20 rules of formulating knowledge in learning, which is described on SuperMemo's page (the learning theory that their site is based on).

Has anyone done that survey and gotten the free month applied to their account yet? If so, how many days did it take?

I have and I have not seen the extension yet. I will probably shoot the CS an email this week.

Ok cool, thanks. I'm going to be buying either 8 or 9 months depending on this free month. Going to send them an email to get a price since they only have 6 and 12 posted right now.

I have been using FC for my OB/GYN and Psych. rotations. Here are my thoughts. (I am using it on Normal Mode, Not Legendary ... I just do not have the time to go through twice as many questions) ... Ok ... On to the review ... Both of the topics were covered good, not great. It helps to pound the topics / situations into your head and most high-yield topics are covered. With that said, I am now starting my pediatrics topics and they are coming up a little short in some areas ... they should have "Flagged" more topics at least in normal mode. IM looks good so far and I still have a lot to add there.

I have taken the shelf exams for Psych (Scored in the middle and passed) and Ob/GYN (Passed but toward the lower end ... Much harder exam!) .

I am also using DIT 2014 Step 2 CK and MTB ... Both are good supplements ... In addition, I have UWorld and Kaplan Q-banks ... I filled out the survey and sent my Step 1 score and got the extra time within a week.

Just like with Step 1 ... There is a point where you stop using FC and spend those extra hours on practice exams (IMO) ... I plan on adding most of the topics and then getting off of it 2-3 weeks before the exam ...

Thanks for the review. Looking forward to hearing a few more. I think I'll try it through my first rotation and see how things go. To me honoring my rotations is the most important thing right now. I was willing to leave a few points on the table during basic sciences, but now my main concern is the time commitment to utility ratio and whether or not it can be functional as a step prep tool while also contributing or at least not hindering clerkship success.

Really on the fence about whether to purchase 1 year now for $240 or hold out for another sale.. My sub is up in October and I definitely want to use it through the end of MS2 (8 months).. From the looks of it I don't want to use it for Step 2, although 8 months at $20 would still be $160, so if I bought it now I'd only be out $80 if I end up hating it during MS3.

It's always interesting to me to see that people will readily spend their money on certain nonessential things (fast food, alcohol, excessive amounts of clothes) but yet they won't spend a reasonable amount of money on something that is actually important towards their career.

Firecracker is a nonessential resource. The choice here isn't firecracker or more beer and McDonald's. It's firecracker or less loan debt.

Thanks for the input though.

E-mail them and ask if your metadata will still be there if your sub runs out and then you buy again. It it's not, just take the <$100 possible loss. Unless you're graduating with <$100k in debt somehow, this decision is inconsequential for your debt finances.

I went ahead and bought 12 months last night. I will be graduating with <$100k med school debt, but my undergrad debt is pretty significant.

Compare the cost of FC to tuition, and then think about the magnitude of step 1 and the impact your score can have on career options. You're right in that there are a bunch of review sources, FC being one of them. Not any one of them are essential on their own (outside of uworld), but using something is essential.

All I'm saying is, if you like it and think it will help you, don't hesitate because of the cost. Saving a few hundred dollars right now is not going to have a huge impact on your future debt. If you're that worried about debt, you should just try and live more frugally and not cut out the things that can help you with your education.

ugh venting---on peds now. the cards themselves are pretty good, but there will only be questions on 1/4 to 1/2 of the material on the card. i hope they catch up soon

I'm not using firecracker at all for step 2, but I used it up to about 70% completion for step 1. This was by far my biggest complaint, and it was one they failed to respond to at all, instead investing their resources in developing step 2 content and horrible question bank style questions. They had the opportunity to fill an empty niche for spaced repetition, but so many of their questions are just so poorly constructed for that style of learning. The 2nd biggest issue, imo, is the lack of a high quality high yield option (rather than one that pretty much just picks random questions to keep).

Are there any updates on how its going? Those who have used it, would you think it would be worthwhile to keep drugs fresh?

Thanks

Thanks

If you think you'd literally only use it for the drugs, then you could probably just get away with a Step 1 resource (Kaplan Pharm videos would probably give you a high-efficiency refresher).

Btw, a general update on my experience: In short, I haven't been using it. For the few shelfs I've taken, I haven't even been able to complete the "gold standard" resources for that shelf. So for me using FC for Step 2 right now, it's a bit like using FC Step 1 while sacrificing either UWorld, Pathoma, or First Aid.

Also, the quality still isn't there -- you still have to rely on the weekly blog for quality topics. As of right now, any time I've been tempted to use it a bit for a shelf, only half or so of the topics of that subject were in the list of topics updated to standards as seen in the blog. I'm sure by the time current MS2's finish Step 1, the Step 2 product will be all current to FC standards though.

My current expectation is that I might try and sneak in some work on it during rotations that don't have shelf exams. Even then though, it's a trade-off for other things (e.g. review FA 2014, research, or start preparing for the shelf for the next rotation). Overall, I anticipate using FC Step 2 far less than I did for Step 1, and mostly as a way for me to not forget IM between my shelf (early MS2) and Step 2.

I agree with Kirby ... They are better ways to use your time. Also ... I do not like how they ask their questions ... Very little, if any, questions that have ... Most accurate test or Best Initial Test ... These are all over U-World Q-Bank ... Use your time wisely! I switched over to Anki which is where I created my own Flashcards from the U-World questions that I missed ...

You know, I've noticed the same thing. The hardest parts of Step 2 content in my opinion are 1) the differential diagnosis and 2) knowing the appropriate "steps" in management. The existing Step 2 FC product (haven't really looked at the updates they've been making) doesn't adequately address either of those aspects of the material.

In FC's defense on this, it's somewhat hard to make those rotating questions be sophisticated enough to incorporate those characteristics. The entire platform is based upon quick-hit facts, which works far better for Step 1 than Step 2. Many times that I as an editor have put in "best test" or "next step" rotating questions, I've received negative feedback saying that my clinical scenario in the question didn't provide enough context. But then again, I can't just write a clinical vignette in those rotating questions, or it would really screw with people's workflow.

But keep putting your concerns and requests in the feedback on topics, questions, and the comments section of topics guys. That's really the best way to get things addressed.

So would you think that making an Anki for drugs would be better? I've never used it, but liked the way that FC would used spaced repetition, not all or nothing type of deal.

I have a hard time retaining random drugs and their side effects, uses, contraindications...etc. I liked the repetition of FC for step one, and used it a bit throughout the year, but most heavily at the beginning of my dedicated step studying (last two months) only flagging all the micro/pharm to hammer them in. But after not seeing some of them for 5 months, I feel them slipping awayyyy...
