Apparently S-100 is a neural crest cell marker, that can mark melanomas, neural tumors, schwannomas, and according to first aid -astrocytomas as well.

Aren't astrocytomas a neuroectoderm derivative, so how would S-100 be a marker? Thanks.

I don't think there is a consensus. I don't see the association of S100 and astrocytomas in UpToDate.

This paper: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15958321 says:

CONCLUSION: High levels of serum S100 protein are associated with radiation-induced brain injury in astrocytoma patients and may serve as the marker for early diagnosis of the injury.

This paper: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15164991 says:

CONCLUSIONS: Serum S-100beta levels are not elevated in children with brain neoplasms compared to healthy children, nor are they elevated in children with astrocytomas compared to non-astrocytomas. The S-100beta protein does not appear to be useful as a serum tumor marker in children with brain neoplasms.

I realize the papers above may not be measuring the exact association of S100 with astrocytomas but if I was pressed for an answer I would say they are associated.
