First Aid IN COLOR

Not impressed. I think I'm gonna hold out for First Aid 2013: 3D (glasses included)

actually looks pretty sweet. too bad I won't get to use it. Step is in ten weeks and I'm not willing to buy it before the errata come out. trusty ol 20e for me.

I'm hoping the entire book has pretty color headings etc. Having pictures where they are suppose to be is one thing, but a complete make-over... 😍

Anybody know a way to get his sooner than January 20? Like ordering straight from them or something? Thanks 🙂

That would be awesome... if anyone knows please share!

I think it's awesome they are doing FA in full color... I wonder if they will integrate the images that are now in the index in color throughout the text (I think that would be much better than having to flip back and forth to index)...

Keep an eye out, I think it typically comes out late December (even though they list January. It happened last year like that).

Amazon now has it coming out January 9th, 2012. Nice!

Sweeet! Thanks for the update!

I saw that on the First Aid 2012 page. Since I already ordered my copy, I checked my orders page and it still says "Delivery estimate: January 24, 2012" (and I have Amazon Prime). I am assuming it is based on the old release date, and they have not updated the Delivery Estimate yet? I hope I would get it sooner if they do release by Jan 9th!

You'll get it Jan 24th. They do that as a punishment to all the gunners who order it so early.

Just got an e-mail from Amazon saying it's estimated to arrive December 29, 2011!

I just picked up my copy today. I happened to see it at my school's bookstore when I was passing by. It had a discount too

too lazy to post pictures- sorry.

just got mine. I had only lightly browsed through the 2010 version so I don't have much comparison here to give. My biggest concern was that it was going to be printed on typical text book super-glossy paper. It is fortunately not. It is not completely matte, but it is very easy on the eyes.

it looks like all of the figures are now in color, and they look nice. not really sure what else to say.

I really like the new version. It's nice to have all of the pictures that used to be in the color photo section integrated into the text. This means I won't have to flip back and forth if I want to see a picture of the path or slide. There might be more pictures included in this version compared to last year's too. The coloring of the graphs helps too. Simple things like dermatomes and even fetal circulation are easier to grasp at first glance because of the coloring. Not to say that stuff was particularly hard, but for me the color makes things even easier.

Also, this year's version is about 50 pages longer. However, I think that's due more to the new layout. The text seems slightly larger and there are more spaces between entries. Additionally, just quickly comparing a section, I noticed that some pages don't include as much information as before. Last year's might have had A, B, C all on one page while this year, A, B are on one page and C is on the next. Lastly, the color photos take up some room and like I said above, there appears to be more pictures in general.

Disclaimer: I do not have FA 2011 so my comments are based on the 2010 version and how it has changed from 2010 --> 2012.

Super excited about the new First Aid 2012 in color! Usually First Aid does not change much year to year, and similarly this new edition does not appear drastically different in content compared to First Aid 2010. However, the design changes implemented really increase the aesthetics and readability of the book compared to 2010.

As SN2ed mentioned in his post, the color images previously in the index are now included throughout the text and all of the previously black & white images in the actual text are now in color as well. Some cartoon images (e.g. malar rash) have been replaced with real pictures. Having color images included within the text is super useful, especially for some sections. For instance, leukemias in the text are described with corresponding images to supplement (pictures of smudge cells with CLL, Auer rods with AML) which previously were in the index or not in the book at all.

Additionally, I have not gone through much of the book but I did notice that several of the errors that persisted from previous years have been fixed in this edition. There are some new mnemonics included and the text is slightly more spaced out. Some random new changes I noticed was a chart with the monoclonal antibodies (and addition of some monoclonals like Rituximab which were not in FA 2010), the "chemo-tox man" for common chemotoxicities, and a Diamond/Square/Triangle mnemonic for the MEN Syndromes. Overall, very pleased with the new First Aid!

I really like FA 2012. The font is bigger and sub-headings are bolded for a better reading experience. I had the 2011 FA and am in the process of transferring my most important notes from it to 2012. In comparison, the 2011 FA looks like a black and white photocopy of the 2012 FA.
The one thing that I miss from the 2011 FA that's not in the 2012 FA is how the pages on the side were color coded in different shades of gray for every section. It helped in being able to quickly flip from one section to the next if you had a general idea of where the section you're looking for was located. But I guess I can just go through and tab it, which I probably would've done anyway.
If you're like me and you get overwhelmed with seeing too much information on one page, the 2012 FA does a good job of making the material look minimalistic but still has all of the important information there. I'm assuming they just spread out all the info more to achieve that effect.

I had the 2010 FA, like the previous poster mentioned, everything seems much more spaced, which for me makes it easier to digest. I'm not sure what was in 2011 FA, but some things seem more organized.

for example I was reviewing the cardiovascular system

better explanations of rhf vs lhf and it breaks up the vasculitis' by vessel size, small changes but easier to breakdown and remember

however I did notice that the carotid sheath was removed, wolff parkingson white syndrome was removed and libman sacks endocarditis was removed.

Is that because these are no longer considered high yield?

overall I like it better than 2010 because of its increased organization

Worth buying if you already have the 2011?

I think it's worth it. Fixed errors, better readability, and more color images make me glad I bought it. This is one of those cases where lots of seemingly minor changes, translates to a substantial improvement. That said, you should take a look at it and decide for yourself. Your library or bookstore most likely has a copy.

Agreed!

Definitely worth it! For someone who's visual-based, all this color is a feast for the eyes. I also love how the high-yield images have been integrated into their respective sections, plus the addition of other images throughout. 40 bucks is small change if it means an improved studying experience (and I'm as cheap as can be...)

I think the color is worth it. It'll help a person differentiate what from what if they have photographic memory.

Would someone be able to post a picture (or a link) of what the actual text/charts/diagrams look like? I'd like to see for myself before I decide to drop $40.

I'm lazy and would rather not walk to and from the subway to get to B&N in this (suddenly) frigid weather without knowing if I'm definitely going to buy it.

I really like it, much better than 2011 in my opinion. Just the layout itself helps out an ADHD guy like me stay engaged haha. I like the way the text is more organized, as HY images have been added into their appropriate section instead of being lumped in the back.

The biggest complaint I have heard is that there is less blank space per page for annotation. I don't think there is THAT much of a problem, at least not enough to warrant the volume of complaining I have seen. Another complaint is that if you want to 3-hole punch the book for use in a binder, that punches out text. I however, had the book spiral bound and that didn't cause any readability problems at all 👍

All in all a HUGE improvement over the last edition, with errors removed and a very nice improvement to layout. I'll post again when/if I find and blatant errors or problems.

If you go to amazon.com (http://www.amazon.com/First-Aid-USM...=UTF8&qid=1325788017&sr=8-1#reader_0071776362) you can use the preview reader to see if this inside is something you'd value.

Or if you want, I can still post a pic of the acutal text for you anytime I get back home after 12:00 PST.

I've been waiting for amazon to include something inside of the text but it doesn't look like that's going to happen. If you could post something when you get a chance that would be GREAT. I'm sure many of us are curious, judging by our colleague above.

the most ******ed and useless preview I've come across.
u can't see any content! 👎

Haha, sorry about that, I didn't actually look at the preview, just knew it was there. I'll post a few pics shortly.

TO THE MODS: is this illegal on SDN? If so, please inform me! I don't want to cause a problem. Just trying to help in the decision making process and not advertising or anything.

You have to sign in as an Amazon customer to see the content. I'm assuming in this day and age everyone has an amazon account. Then search for any term (ie. achalasia) and you'll be able to see every resulting page as a preview.

A mod got back to me and said he isn't sure if it's ok or not to post pics of the new edition. He said he would get back to me, and if the SDN hive mind approves I will post some pics!

I don't think it's legal. but thanks for the effort anyway 🙂

I was logged in, I can only see useless stuff and the Index.

Yeah did you do a search for any medical terms in the little search bar? That's how you view sample pages when you're logged in.
