Hi people,

I completed general surgery internship, and I will be starting anesthesia residency in 7/2011. Currently, I am looking for a job. I won't get my state license until next Feb so I can't moonlight nor work at urgent care at this point. It's tough to find a paid research position. I heard that you can work as first assistant with previous surgery residency background. Does anyone know more about this? Or any suggestion to what type of job I should be looking into? I wouldn't mind non-clinical job as long as I don't get paid hourly minimum wage...

It depends on the hospital and their credentialing system. The standards for physician assists can be different than for RNFA, CSA, etc.

For example, we have one hospital that requires all physicians who assist to be Board Eligible - thus you have to have completed a residency. There are others who do not require that but you are required to have X weeks of "experience".

The surgical assist group I use has several physicians on staff. One is FM, one is Ob, one did 3 years of surgery (and is by far the worst assist of the physicians and worse than many of the CSAs). The FM guy is actually the best and the most skilled.

So yes...possible BUT it takes many months to get credentialed especially if you don't have a license even as a surgical assist AND to get on insurance plans. Frankly, it might not be worth your while at this late date since you probably wouldn't be able to get it done before spring.

I agree with WS. It all depends on the state....

I suspect no matter what state you are in, they will require you have some sort of license to practice in any fashion of healthcare... thus, you can not moonlight in urgent care.
