I've followed SDN ortho for a long time from looking for advice on applying to ortho residency and subsequently fellowship. I don't think I've seen much on looking for a job though.

I feel ill prepared looking for jobs but now that I've secured fellowship, I am trying to start expressing interest early on since academic faculty positions are not as abundant as private practice jobs.

I would really appreciate any advice from attendings that follow this thread as to what they would do in my shoes.

Please feel free to DM as well.

Not seeing any answers to this question, so I'll bite. I am not orthopedics, but am in academics in PM&R.

From my viewpoint, when it came to looking for an academic position, it was all about networking. I started to ask all of these questions after I had matched into my fellowship, then knowing that I would be a subspecialist within the field of PM&R. I reached out to the leadership in my own academic residency program and department and inquired about the needs of the department and whether I could fit into any of those roles. I reached out to academic centers in other states, mostly near family, where I would like to work. I had done research with an attending at another academic institution while in residency, so this helped to open doors. I talked with people at conferences who were in similar positions as myself and got their advice. I talked with people at conferences who were at other institutions I was interested in and asked about needs. It was all about networking.

From my experience in PM&R, there were lot's of academic jobs out there and quick turnover in many (many people thought they wanted academics originally and then decided after a few years to transition to either a different institution, different state, or to private practice). Private practice jobs are abundant and often better advertised than the academic departments. Hope this helps!
