Hey guys!
I'm starting my first day in the clinic next week. Got my schedule - I'm on OB/GYN, starting on OB night float. I'm nervous and don't know what to expect. I've got Case Files and FA for OB/GYN plus a textbook we were told to get but haven't touched them.

What should I do to prepare? I don't want to spend the whole weekend studying but I'd like to spend a couple of hours prepping so I don't look like a total ***** (at least try not to, haha).

Ideas? Suggestions? Thank you!!

I think the best advice is in First Aid for OB/Gyn (which I've only read the introductory chapter to).

"Try not to look like you're being tortured."

Yeah, that's all I've got so far.

Sorry, but it's really not going to be much fun. Read up on normal L&D before the rotation starts, like the different stages of labor, how long each should last, common complications and how to actually deliver a baby. Also, don't forget shoe covers. My first day of OB, I forgot to put on shoe covers, I was about 10 feet back from the patient watching, figured I'd be fine--nope, the resident (a royal b^tch, btw) didn't clamp the cord and sprayed blood all the way across the room and all over my shoes. Ruined a perfectly good pair of sneakers.

There's nothing you can do to prepare. Just be nice and work hard.

I (just recently) started and feel like this is probably true for 99% of anything, anywhere you could be starting on. Just throw yourself in. Don't think.

And don't just wear the little ones, go for the full moon boots. 👍

Accept the fact that you're going to feel like a complete idiot for the immediate future, and you'll be more than prepared. It's also good practice for intern year.

This is actually really true. Just make peace with the feelings of inadequacy you might experience. Make peace with "the best you can do" being what you should do, even if it's not always "good enough" for yourself or some higher power.

Thick skin. Be nice. Don't complain. Ask how you can help. Do your reading. Review anatomy before you go to the OR.
