First Interview Batch - First Dibs?!

Hey Everyone 🙂,

I am both shocked and excited to have received my first interview to an amazing medical school that I would love to attend.

From being a stalker here on SDN and heresay, it seems that I was sent an interview invite extremely quickly (within less than 2 weeks of being complete and on the first day the school began sending out invites).

I was curious if anyone here that had more experience/knowledge than I do on the matter had any input...my questions:

1) Does being interviewed during the first week that the school begins interviewing put you in a GREAT spot to get in (are they more likely to take you if you interview that early...or is it just as competitive as later since they reserve spots throughout the process)?

2) Does being sent an interview that very first day mean that the school likes you more than, say, the people they start sending interviews the next coming weeks to? (so do they place you at an extremely high priority to do this...or is it luck of the pile basically?)

At some places it means they like you a little bit more, but at some places it just means you were among the best of the earliest applications they received and reviewed.

I had 2 interviews at on the very first possible day of interviews for last season and it ended up in a rejection and a waitlist. Don't let the first batch interview get you too high, because if it turns out badly it really hurts. It took me a long time to get over that first day interview where they convinced me I was a shoe-in since it was the first day that turned into an outright rejection.

It depends on how the school's admissions system works. If it is rolling, then yes, the earlier you interview the better. If it is non-rolling, then it probably doesn't matter.

OP, I don't know what some of these people are talking about, but considering the vast majority of schools have rolling admissions, it does mean something. It is much easier to get accepted now than it will be at, for example, the end of the admission cycle. The standard for admission (gpa/mcat/ECs/etc.) gets higher and higher as time goes on because there will be fewer spots in the class to fill. So yes you are at an advantage; however, I do agree with the person above who said to not think it is a sure thing. Nothing in med school admissions is a sure thing. Prepare for that Gtown interview as if you are fighting for the last spot in the class and do the same for the rest of your interviews too or you may end up reapplying next year. There are plenty of people who get a lot of interviews, yet don't prepare much, and end up getting no acceptances. Good luck.

Since schools can't start offering acceptances before October 15, interviewing before then probably puts you in the same batch.
