Hey everybody,

I was fortunate to receive an interview invite on 7/3 which clearly means I was one of the first to be offered an interview from this particular school. I was wondering if receiving this invite gives me a better chance at acceptance compared to someone who for example would get theirs say September/October. I know that an interview invite doesn't automatically mean you're in and I don't want to go in there cocky, but I was wondering if anyone could attest to this possibility. I just want to calm my nerves :nailbiting:

Not necessarily. October/September is still an early interview date. You definitely have a good shot with such an early interview but by no means are you a guarantee. Some schools just invite interviewees as they look at their app so compared to someone interviewing in February yeah you probably have a better shot but September probably about the same.

As someone who was one of two people to attend a school with a smaller class size from one of the final pre-december interview batches I wouldn't look at it that way.

You got the interview. They probably accept a large percentage of those interviewed; I think that fact is far more reassuring than when you actually interviewed.

You're still competing for a seat with everyone else who gets a pre-Dec interview. Basically anyone who gets an interview (whether for July or the last week of November) is competing for the same amount of seats. Although you might be interviewing early, you'll be ranked against everyone who interviews before/after you. Also keep in mind that not everyone has submitted their applications yet. Some may submit in August or September and might get an invite right away.

So basically, good job on scoring an interview. Now for it to lead to an acceptance, how well you interview matters more than when you interview.

Typically, being given an interview means you have already made it past a large cut. This would be similar to when you apply for a job and the company brings you on-site. It means they are seriously considering you and want to meet you, but is not a guaranteed offer.

From what I have heard most schools offer about 2x more interviews than seats. So you probably have about a 50-50 shot at this point or maybe a little better.

They also accept more students than they have seats for, knowing that some students that get accepted will choose to attend another institution.

Every school is different. Some schools interview 3 candidates for every 1 slot. And they might offer 1.5 to 2 acceptance for every seat in a class. Highly qualified candidates might get into more than one program and will have to turn down acceptance offers.

Some schools try to fill their class on Dec 1st, while some gradually fill their seats. I interviewed Jan 22nd at a school and was told they had 25-30/100 seats still open.

It is always flattering to be among the first to be chosen for an interview, but anecdotal evidence suggests that not all early interviews translate into automatic acceptance. Unless there are adcoms that have hyperthymesia, by the time sept/oct rolls around, they may have forgotten the faces of the earlier applicants. Arrogance is not a quality that is in high demand.

No. You'll get accepted if they like you.

I'd say your shot is just as good as the person who receives an interview in November. I interviewed at Penn, UCLA, and UoP all post December 1st and was accepted to all of them. There were 2 schools I interviewed with in September and haven't heard anything from them. Looking back on it, it was probably because I was much more relaxed in my later interviews. Regardless, just focus on doing well in the interview 🙂

I think you will probably be just fine.

Depends on the school. I interviewed at one school that straight up told us that the reason we were in the first batch is because they really really wanted us. It was my first interview, and I kinda blew it. But I was accepted 12/1, along with the four other applicants (out of like 20 that day) whom I knew the fates of.

Again, school dependant and even then, not necessarily guaranteed.
