first interview invite, but...

so i just got my first interview invite, and i was totally stoked. i was really excited, but i couldn't help noticing that the date they wanted me to come was pretty late-- january. i asked my other friend who got an interview and he said his date was in november. then i started worrying quite a bit when i saw a forum where this guy talked about how he interviewed in january and even later in the spring and how some schools had actually filled all their spots. now, i'm getting pretty paranoid that i might go in january and i won't even have a chance at all to get in. the guy on the forum also said he suggests trying to get as early an interview as possible. should i call the school and ask if it's possible to get an earlier date? also (sorry, i know this is long), i have a feeling that they invite the stronger applicants earlier in the game, so even tho i submitted my app earlier than my friend i think he got an earlier invite cuz he has better stats. ah, can someone please offer me advice/comfort? =) i'd really appreciate it. i need all the help i can get, cuz i know i'm not a very strong applicant and i dont want to interview so late that the odds are strongly against me =/

It depends a lot on whether the school has rolling admissions or not. If they do, you might want to request an earlier interview date (can't hurt to ask, right?), but really January is mid-season, not late. Some schools finish earlier than others though, but I think all of them go into at least March.

the school IS rolling. and i guess you're right, it doesn't hurt to ask, riiiite? =P at least i hope, haha. but the thing is, after i got my invitation i emailed them a confirmation saying that i would be able to attend on that date. so i guess i'd have to be like, "i know i said i could, but is it possible for an earlier date..."

Maybe you can tell them you'll be flying into the area on such and such date for another interview 😉 and that it would save you a lot of money if you can interview there as well.

Just tell them that you know you scheduled for that January date, but if a cancellation occurs earlier, could you please notify me?

when i applied previously i was in a similar situation. i was excited to get an invite in october, but the earliest interview date available was in mid january. so, i called the admissions office every few days asking if there were any cancellations. the second time i called, the admissions person said "can you come next thursday?" (a week later), and so i ended up interviewing at the end of october as opposed to the middle of january. try and see what happens. you might get lucky as people will start to cancel interviews when the first acceptances come out around october 15. good luck.

Calling periodically to ask if anyone's cancelled sounds like a good idea to me, assuming the schools not too far away for you to visit on short notice.

Plus, congrats on the interview! Getting interviewed is great no matter when it takes place.
