First Lines...

Hi everyone,

To help distract us from stalking the mailman, I thought it would be cool to hear what the first line of everyone's personal statement was. I know when I sat down to write mine, the first paragraph was the hardest. Anyone care to share their first lines?

Here's mine:
".The husband’s face flashed white as the doctor told him the grim results; Doc needed surgery, and he needed it now."

I have been a working scientist for years, but in veterinary medicine, I have found a field in which I am challenged and engaged like no other.

Haha, now that I look back at it, it's kind of cheesy 🙂 But true!

So I have to study for a biochem exam, write a history paper (luckily I DON'T have to write it on Kant) and write a bunch of mini essays and stuff for financial aid... and I have the flu so I'm under house arrest. Oh, and my computer is freezing/dying (which makes me really happy because that's some more money I'm going to have to spend). So of course I dug out my personal statement to figure out what my first line was...

".As a child growing up in ..New York City.., skyscrapers and subways defined my life."

Ahh, the good ol' personal statement. Spent so much time working on it I still feel like I just wrote it.

I wrote 2 different statements plus a diversity statement.

My first statement:
.Today I cut off 30 mouse heads….although performing a necropsy on a research study is never easy to do and to a non-scientist it may seem cruel and that I do not have compassion for these animals, the exact opposite is true.

.Second statement:
.Monday morning arrived with the sounds of the winds howling, palm trees snapping, and the rain slamming against my windows.

.Diversity statement:
.On September 7, 2006 my obstetrician encouraged me to go immediately from my appointment to the hospital due to my blood pressure. .

Ahh ... I forgot that I had to write a personal diversity statement -- silly WI. Here it is:

"I have to admit, on the surface, I do not appear to be diverse."

And it's true -- I'm from WI, we're not diverse there!

I've always been a strong proponent for doing what makes me happy. Ever since I was a child I have been obstinate and pigheaded, and have clung to my ideas with the tenacity of a hunting dog on a trail.

My first sentence was very short, so I decided to stick in my second one as well. 🙂

April of 1988 marked the first time that I wanted to be a veterinarian.

Oh man, my first paragraph was a bit over the top so while I'd be embarrassed to give it all, the first line is OK

It all started during my youth; an appreciation for nature, a love for the outdoors, a spark at the sight of something new.

Can you believe the only reference to vets, veterinarians, etc. I made was once when I said "veterinary medicine?" 😱

I also like my PhD app first line better than my vet school app first line..

Sometimes transversal of a winding path is a far more interesting way to move towards a destination.

My intense interest in and limitless compassion towards animals has always been a huge part of who I am. While most kids enjoy nursery rhymes and large colorful illustrations in children’s books, my favorite book as a child was my Encyclopedia Britannica designated “D”. Before I entered middle school, all of the pages dedicated to the word “Dog” were bent, highlighted, and worn.

When applying to undergrad, the last school I had applied to (when I was SO over the whole application process) had an essay prompt something along the lines of "tell us things about you that we would never guess from looking at your grades and test scores." I really couldn't care less if I got accepted to said college or not, but also knew that it wasn't very competitive and I could probably afford to have a little fun with it, so I went on a hike, sat on a rock, and wrote what popped into my mind (sometimes a scary idea). It was the most absurd essay I've ever written; I told them about my affinity for oranges and useless trivia, my current Dutch Blitz winning streak, what my mom was going to name me if I was a boy, all sorts of equally useless things. It was great. And fun. And, I ended up getting a full ride to the school (didn't go, though). I really think adcoms just like something different 🙂

Holy cow, I just finished writing my personal statement for the upcoming application cycle 2 weeks ago and that's exactly what I talked about in it hahaha! I wrote about how I didn't always want to be a veterinarian, originally I wanted to be an olympic gymnast! I wonder how many of us there are out there!

I kinda wandered away from the coaster enthusiast crowd a while ago. Ironically it was around the time when I moved to Orlando, home of year-round amusement parks. 🙂
