Alright, hopefully I don't get boo'ed off the stage here. But a wise man told me once that there are no such things as dumb questions so here it goes...

Why are patients instructed to fast before surgery? What are the problems that can arise from a patient with food within the GI while under?thank you

possibility of aspirating/vomiting while they are under and choking on their own vomit. They will still perform surgery on you if you just ate butsuddenly got into an accident requiring emergency surgery, but if it's an elective surgery, you want to decrease any risk to a minimum.
