Hi, I am beginning my sophomore year in Biological Sciences at LSU this fall. I didn't really do all that well my first semester of college (3.0 GPA :scared: ), but the past two semesters have gone very well for me. I made a 3.6 my second semester and an A in the one summer class that I have just finished.

I know many people will give the standard "I couldn't go through the transition" excuses, but I actually have a valid one. My best friend of 10 years was in a very serious car accident and was in a coma for 6 months. Her wreck was during the first week of school, and this seriously took a toll on my grades/studying. I stayed at the hospital every single day, neglecting that I had tests and homework to do.

I am wondering if this will haunt me for the rest of my pre-medical career or if constant improvement will be okay. I'm back on track and ready to make my 4.0's from here on out. Anything like this happen to any of you? And what do you guys think?

Just keep doing well, "upward trend" is the key.

Besides, your first semester wasn't really that bad. How'd you like to trade for my 2.1?

no, not doomed. I had a 0.99 my first semester (covered grades) and a 2.03 my second semester freshman year. It worked out fine.

Yes a 3.0 is definitely fixable. Especially since Louisiana state schools are more leniant than most. Keep working hard and yes an upward trend helps. Wow a 2.1 and .99! That will take a while to recover from! Anyways, keep up the good work.

The average gpa for accepted medical students is about 3.6.

Yes, it took about seven years to recover, but the point is I did. 😀

It has taken a while to recover from. The point is that it's not the end of the world if you f*** up as a freshamn. I'm applying now and exmike has some GREAT acceptances under his belt.

Chin up.... then right back down into the books 🙂

Ahh! *Sigh of semi-relief* Thank you all so much! That makes me feel much better. And you're right, chin up, but head right back down into the books. 🙂

Me too (give or take <.5)! I'm applying this year

My freshman year sucked (<3.0), but i've been busting my butt ever since. I don't think it's the end of the world for me.
