Hi,

After doing a search, I couldn't find a clear-cut answer for this...

In dental schools, is there favoritism towards first-time applicants or re-applicants or neither?

I've heard that re-applicants might actually be looked down upon (because they were rejected already once, it's hard for the school to give them another chance, esp. with all the new applications coming in.)
Also, I've heard that re-applicants might be looked upon more favorably because it shows dedication to pursuing the field, and overall growth and maturity and whatnot.
😕

Any input is much appreciated.

I'd agree with the previously stated.
Since Dschool is so competitive, I wouldn't be surprised if I didn't get in my first time around, but that year I'm waiting to reapply I would be working on making my application even better. As long as the re-app isn't just sitting around working part time waiting for the next app cycle to start they should be good! Good luck!

first time... 1 interview
second time... 6 interviews

as long as you ain't wasting time in the between.

What difference does it make...either you're competitive for that school during the cycle or you're not.

first time applying- 2 interviews (notified in November, but both pre-dec and no acceptances)

second time applying- 3 interviews before October

Don't just take the year off and wait tables and live at your parents house. Try finding a job in the field or at least in the medical industry. Also, call schools to see what they didn't like about your application. My DAT scores were my biggest downfall the first time, but I retook the exam and did far far better. I feel this helped show my passion for dentistry. Still, you never know. :xf:

Re-applicants aren't looked down upon at all, IF they improve their app. I cant emphasis the IF enough!! you must show improvement. my first time applying i had 0 acceptances (obviously) and 8 the second time. but i improved my app.

Just being a re-applicant doesn't make you more competitive, it what you did during the year off.

sorry for so much repetition.
