First-timer applying to UOP & UCSF

Hi everyone. I am applying to the International Dental Program at the University of the Pacific and UCSF for the first time. I know UOP only accepts 16 students a year and UCSF 24. I'm sure the competition must be really stiff. Has anyone applied to these schools? I know they take part 1 scores into consideration...thus my retaking it this July to get a better score. Has anyone else applied to these schools? How many times did you have to apply before you were accepted? What were your part 1 scores? How many people apply for these positions every year? If my scores aren't high enough, do I have to resend my ECE report to those that require original documents (specifically UCSF)? I'd really appreciate anyone's input who's been in the same situation or is in the same situation. Part 1 is only two months away and I'm in a panic. I don't know if that's a sufficient amount of time to review for all four subjects to score a decent number. I've passed part 1 before but my score is not high enough to apply for school. Any information or even some words of wisdom would be greatly appreciated. Thanks all. 🙂

If you do your homework and run a search on this forum you'll find plenty of info.
FYI, people applying to UOP and UCSF are usually the same crowd, so competition is not any easier in one or the other, but both schools have different selection criteria so use that to your advantage.

I followed your advice & ran a search on UOP in this forum. I spent a good hour or so reading a lot of material , however I am afraid I wasn't able to get a clear picture on UOP. I would really appreciate if u could shed some light on your school.... things like what they stand for, what are their selection criteria, details on how good are the didactics & clinics & any other info that you think is pertinent.....

UOP motto is humanism. That's their basic goal. To treat everyone (students, facultye, staff) among themselves nicely, without the typical rank arrogance. IDS students are treated really nicely by faculty and stuff. I feel sometimes fellow american students see us as different, but is getting better with time.

I don't know about their selection criteria 'cause they don't discuss that with me. But the mere fact that I'm in 🙂 tells you that UOP has a more humanistic approach than UCSF for example, where all they care is about your grades. UOP cares about it too, but not in an obsesive way as some other schools seem to base they're selection criteria.

Like most schools they supossedly try to keep the class diverse, despite that my class is everything but diverse. But according to what I've heard diveristy will get better with next year class. Let's just hope and pray.

UOP is not a big research school, is mainly a clinical school, where you get your inside out drilled practicing everything and working on everything. Research is available, I have friends that do it full time, but is not mandatory. Despite this they sure place a lot of students in post graduates program.

UOP is a private school, it has no goverment funding. Student tuition only covers 2/3 of the cost of running the school. The other 1/3 comes from grants, donations, etc. Most of that comes form alumni and dentists of the area donation. So by treating everyone nice they have better returns when students graduates and start making money. Get it?

While public schools could care less how you feel about them and are much more burocratic in their services, simply because they're a public school and get money from other sources.

UOP holds a series of events trough the year, to make sure everyone is kept socializing I guess. It's good 'cause it improves relations among people outside of the school builiding evironment. But remember a lot of this is public relations. There's defitnely a lot of rich kids in UOP, not in the IDS program tough. 🙂

Still is a great school, and becuase I know people in UCSF I'm glad I don't go there, but at the same time I would have like gone a more diverse place. Hopefully that will change in the future.

hi meggs how r u i wanna ask u something my score is 93/240/3.36 now i have question i heard most university in CA require 250 in toefl wht should i do m i able to apply in uop or they didnt call me for interview coz of my low toefl score can u make a picture clear for me. advice from others is also invited

Call UOP and find out for yourself, as a matter of fact call or email ALL CA schools and find out for yourself.
