Hey all,

I'm taking a stab at the DATs and hopefully will take it around February of 2016. I just wanted to thank you all for the schedules and tips that are available here! And I also am looking for some advice...

I never really took dentistry seriously in undergrad and now 1.5 years out of college I want to give it a try so I do not look back and regret never really trying. I took all the pre-req courses in undergrad, but didn't ace em (Science GPA under 3.0). Hearing from alumni, if I BEAST the DATs I will still have some places that would consider me. I just wanted to know if this was true. If not, what would be the best next step for me to take?

I am sorry if this is in the wrong section of the forum, I wasn't really sure exactly where to ask this. If there is a better place for this post, please let me know and I will move it. Thank you all for your time! 🙂

Some schools do like high DAT and may over look the low gpa. However, that doesn't mean they don't look at your gpa. Is your sgpa around 2.0, 2.5, or 2.9? Just know that your sgpa is below 3.0 doesn't tell us much. I mean, if someone has a sgpa of 1.0, I don't think any any dental schools will accept them even if you do kill the DAT. If you are around 2.9 sgpa, then some schools will probably call you in for an interview if you can score 23+ on your DAT. Lastly, your gpa and DAT scores are important, but don't forget that you have to do around 100+ shadowing hours and other ec. Good luck on your DAT on February~!

I'm in the same situation and got a pre-dec interview so far out of 21 schools I applied to. It's definitely possible, but very difficult.

Hello thehumanfob,

I agree with Tooth Fariy, you did not let us know how far below 3.0 is your GPA . You mentioned that was undergrad, have you completed a Masters program? I always advise students with a lower GPA to do some research before applying to dental schools and seek out the ones you have the best chance for acceptance. Your personal statement is also a very important part of the process so make sure it is stellar. This could be the one thing that sets you apart from other applicants and gets you an interview. I have attached a file with some guidelines for writing your personal statement.

Wishing you the best in your studies and on your DAT.

Take care..Nancy
