I am sitting here looking at the text book list and supply list...and it sounds like our financial aid is released after our tuition is due...feeling a bit confused...so focusing on what I do know...like my class schedule.

Unless the vet school is on a seriously different financial schedule than undergraduates (which I wouldn't doubt is completely possible,) your financial aid /should/ come in mid-June.

From the email form CVM:

"Please be aware that your financial aid will not be disbursed until the
first day of school for the University...not the CVM's first day. The
first day of school for the University is: August 19, 2009. "

I read in another email that tuition was due before classes started...but that might be wrong (there is conflicing information about other things like Vaccination Forms floating around as well!) We will be notified...but that is different than disbursed.

Oh, well. It'll get figured out.

Perhaps it's a deposit that's due, and tuition itself isn't due until a few weeks later? At my UG school, there was a 200 dollar deposit due before classes started, and the rest was due by the end of the first or second week...

Edit: Is that when the excess cash checks are sent? As opposed to when the loans pay your tuition?

Wow, the differences are interesting!

No idea. We already paid a deposit. Not terribly worried, just confused (we have't decided whether we will use the loans or not...we can theoretically pay without loans, but there are some concerns about cash flow.) It seems like there is different info coming from differnet places (all official staff) that is confusing/conflicting. Like on proof of vaccines; first it had to be turned in with the acceptance letter, then it was 'within 30 days', then we had an email saying 'by August 1st' and I just got an email notifying mine is past due. Huh? well, ok, I have my last vaccine (MMR) tomorrow, so will send it tomorrow. Just confusing. It is summer though, so I am just going with teh flow for the moment.

I wish we had our text book and supply lists already, but I'm just trying to rest assured that I'll get them when I need them and take it all in stride lol. Sigh.

Yeah, it is nice to have those early. I have bought nearly all my books on ebay for about 20% of the cost of buying through the school (a club handles it for the school.) Now I am trying to decide if I need to buy the supplies through the school or on my own (labcoats, overalls, scrubs, gloves, stethoscopes, needles holders, etc)

Another good place to find less expensive text books is on Amazon, especially now since not that many people are buying at the moment. The cool thing I have found is, at least for anatomy, I already have all but one of the recommended texts from t/aing the grad anatomy classes the last few years.

I am VERY frustrated with U MN not having any registration or even text book lists ready yet. DVMorBust I am about to just say yea to WI, who has already not only let me register, but already sent me my financial aid info. I know and I don't want to hear it! 😛 This week WI is winning the recruiting battle. And they say WOMEN can't make up their minds. 🙄

We haven't "officially" received this, but it's more than likely that this will be our base schedule:

M 8:00am-5:00pm (with a random break from 9:00am-1:00pm... not sure what it's for?)
TR 8:00am-4:00pm
WF 9:00am-2:00 pm or 3:00pm*

Lunch is 12:00-1:00 MWF

*There are 2 sections of Clinical Imaging: 2-3 W or 2-3 F

Classes:
Biomedical Sciences I + Lab
Clinical Foundations I + Lab
Principles of Morphology I + Lab
Case Study I

Elective choices are pending.

Still waiting for UGA to send out ANY information. Still dont know when orientation is, what courses we are taking, no textbooks or supply list and no financial aid info. UGH:wtf:

LVT, you can check this website to see the schedules from the 2008-2009 academic year so you can get an idea of what to expect this fall! I bet it will be updated when they have the schedule ready for this year.
http://www.vet.uga.edu/academic/life/schedules.php

Also, financial aid should be awarded this month. I'll let you know if I receive anything snailmail, but so far, nothing.

Hmm i didn't know vet schools were sending this out yet... hmmm anyone heard anything from Tufts?

From what I know with other schools, you will find out your financial aid package ahead of time (probably in June) but it will not be disbursed until you start school. Meaning you will not get a check until you start school. As long as you're not paying for school out of pocket, I wouldn't worry about tuition being "due" before disbursement as the school has the financial aid money but they simply are taking out their chunk (for tuition, fees, etc) before giving you the remainder.

Are any incoming students planning on taking electives first semester? I know there are only a handful of electives that are open to 1st year students...thoughts?

I'm planning on taking at least one elective (V Path 401 - Basics of Medical Terminology - MW 12:00pm-1:00pm for the first half of the semester)... whether or not I take any more depends on what's available.

Hey everyone!

I don't know the exact times for Va-Md classes but it is something like:

MWF 8am to 1pm
T/R 8am to 3 or 4pm

Pretty similar to other schedules 🙂

Core Classes:
Anatomy
Histology
Physiology
Biochemistry
Immunology
Professional Foundations
Ethology
Large Animal Husbandry

Electives:
Embryology
Domestication

Jglovicz: As far as the electives go, I am taking at least one my first year- another student recommended taking both (we only have 2 options) so that getting the required credits would be a little easier. But I do not want to overload myself right off the bat, so I am only signed up for Domestication- go pass/fail!!

I think that you should at least sign up for one, and then if it looks like too much, you can always drop it in the first few weeks of school during an add/drop period. It may make later semesters a little bit easier!

Nothing on this end, but I imagine it will be soon.

I don't think we have electives in teh first year....but we have to choose selectives for the end of first semester.

I should probably mention that this isn't an official schedule sent to the students by Mizzou. It's the one that they have up on their website that everyone can see lol. I assume the actual schedule won't be much different from this, however.

I definitely panicked for a millisecond because I thought I missed an email or letter somewhere along the line! It's interesting to see the differences between schools.

lol, OVC domestic students just found out Monday whether or not they were accepted!! I'm still high as a kite about that...haven't even started to think about textbooks and schedules and whatnot, haha.

Oh, well. It'll get figured out.

NCSU financial aid is somewhat tricky, but I also did my undergrad here. We'll get the financial aid award letter mailed in June. Tuition is "due" in July, but if the financial aid package is enough to cover the costs of tuition, then nothing is actually due. The university will deduct tuition/fees from the financial aid package and they will refund the rest on Aug 19th. I am not a fan of the late refund.

Are any incoming students planning on taking electives first semester? I know there are only a handful of electives that are open to 1st year students...thoughts?

At K-State, they changed the curriculum. We are required to take 3-4 credits of electives in the fall and 2 in the spring of our first year. I was really excited because I wasn't expecting any to even be offered.

I appreciate this. I think the 'odd' part is that they disburse when the undergrad starts...which is later than the cvm by 10 days, and something said the tuition was due BEFORE school started. Also, we may be paying part of it out of pocket. I am not stressed....just confused.

Thank you for clarifying this! So if I am paying part out of pocket, that part will be due in July? That is pretty obnoxious. Really appreciate the information!

Obviously every school is different, but does anybody have an idea about how much actual animal time First Years typically get? It seems to weird to me that I work 40 hrs/wk, plus personal time (own animals, rescue, etc.) with animals now, yet will have exponentially less (if any) animal contact during the first year of VET school!

For Oregon State (does things on the quarter system)

1st Quarter:
M: 9-5
T: 8 or 10-5*
W: 8 or 10-4*
Th: 8-4
F: 9-5

*I think this depends on whether your VIPS section meets Tuesday or Wednesday.

Classes:
Physiology
Micro Anatomy
Gross Anatomy
Animal Care
VIPS (veterinary integrated problem solving)
Vetmed Orientation.

There's not much info on the details of the classes but I'm hoping we'll actually get to do something with live animals in the animal care lab.

I was told that part of it depends on which organizations/clubs we join, but that the vast majority of class time are cadavers. I heard something about handling sessions and such, but don't remember the details.

the suspense is killing me!!! again lol😀

Ack my post got eaten!

Trying again.

Just so you know you won't hear anything from Tufts for a while. You will get (have gotten?) info about housing that basically consists of telling you to go to the housing site on the student page and what the log in is. If you need that info now you can PM me but I am leaving tomorrow.

If you are curious about the schedule I don't think the V13 schedule is on TUSK yet but you can look at the V12 schedule to get an idea of how it works. Although they are making Clinical skills half days now (classes in morning then clin skills in the afternoon). The log in for TUSK is the same as your e-mail.

You will get info about clubs and the survival guide probably sometime in July but again you can look at that stuff in the V12 section on TUSK.

If you have other questions feel free to PM me or one of the other people in the current students contact list.

Enjoy your summer!

wahh we don't even hear about who got into the AVC until next friday at the EARLIEST! I wish i was planning! haha

I am not sure about other schools but I know CSU has a mulitple programs that allow 1st years to work with the VTH. I am particularly interested the "Large Animal Emergency Response Team". This program allows the student to be on call and when an emeregency comes in the vets let you assist and learn while doing. Sounds pretty cool! There is also a foal care team.

Enjoy Dr. Fails for your anatomy and most of your neuro classes. She is AWESOME. I am SO jealous but at least I was able to spend the last year with her. Also be sure to hang out with Bog Spavin, CSU's resident anatomy geeks/ rock band.

Our only elective first year is Wildlife I and II, which I really want to take. We have a list of our classes that we got at interviews but no word yet on the actual times of day yet.

Anyone have an official schedule from Illinois? Before I accepted I thoroughly reviewed this with Mary Kelm so I will post what I know, but if there is something official floating around for those who were accepted initially I'd love to see it!!

First 8 weeks of semester:

M-W morning (8-9am)
colloquium - multiple topics ranging from euthanasia and grief counseling to client communication (tons of topics but that's all I remember)
Thursday morning (8-9am)
online activity I think relating to colloquium from previous days
Friday morning (8-9am)
Mary couldn't remember if this was a special topics lecture or if we just came in late

M-F (9am-whenever)
CLINICS!!!!!!! 8 - 1 week rotations through various departments within the hospital. Each week will have goals and expectations. You leave each day when your case is done. How freakin' awesome is that!

Second 8 weeks of semester are supercourses, this is normal lectures and I didn't get any information on this because I was so excited about the clinics.

Second semester first year is normal lecture based learning. Second year also begins with 8 weeks of clinics! I'm super excited!!!😀

I definitely panicked for a millisecond because I thought I missed an email or letter somewhere along the line! It's interesting to see the differences between schools.

LOL I'm glad that I fixed it, then. The timing was nice, though, because our schedules are posted in our MyZou accounts now. Yay! Not all of the courses we're registered for are on the "view my weekly schedule" calendar yet, but they're all listed. Eeee!

You're quite welcome. Correct and correct, the difference would be due in July and it is obnoxious!

Thanks Lenmaca. Im sorry if I sounded petty there a bit. Unfortunately, Im a total A-type over-planner. Its really the only way I can function with 3 kids. So the unknown drives me a bit batty.

No problem! It didn't seem petty at all. I can't imagine how stressful things must be for all the OOS people that are currently trying to plan/move to a new place and start vet school, especially when you haven't heard much from said school! I just thought I could help a little bit, hopefully! 🙂
Here's hoping much more will be revealed this month!

I am so jealous of you guys who already have schedules! I know what our core classes will be for fall quarter but I LOVE schedules and am dying to see how each day will be blocked out (I know, I'm ridiculous). Davis hasn't even gotten us our student ID #'s yet!! Well, I guess they are "in the office" but I emailed to receive mine about 4 days ago and nothing yet 🙁 Gotta love that UC Bureaucracy! As a former UC Berkeley UG I guess I shouldn't be too surprised....

Do any of you know what your orientations will be like? I tried to get the 2nd years on the UC Davis FB group to spill the beans but they won't tell. Then I found out our first "veterinary curriculum course" VMD400A or something like that, actually starts during orientation. I looked up the course description in the on-line handbook and the first thing it says under the syllabus is RETREAT.

Which amuses me.... Are we going to have vet school ropes course or something??!?!:laugh::laugh:

VAGirl, if you're reading this, do YOU want to spill the orientation beans? Pretty please? 😎

Okay, I cheated. I looked on the c/o 2012 welcome page (which is still up!). hmmm... looks like it will be a week of touchy-feely-team-building stuff 😛

My student host said that the c/o 2011 had their orientation in Tahoe. :xf:

Oh... and I know we don't have a schedule yet, but I can't resist posting our 1st quarter classes!!! This thread is making me excited 😀

Seeing some of these schedules almost makes me feel guilty for the schedules we get from Murdoch in our first 3 years--almost 🙂 And I won't even dwell on our study breaks we get every 4 weeks or so ;x

1st years just finished this schedule
Mon - 8:30-4:30 (break 10:30 -1:30)
Tues - 9:30-1:30 (break 10:30 - 12:30)
Wed - 8:30 - 4:30 (break 10:30 -11:30)
Thurs - 8:30 - 4:30 (break 11:30 - 1:30)
Fri - 8:30 - 1:30 (break 9:30-10:30 & 11:30 - 12:30)

Courses and associated Labs:
Musculoskeletal Anatomy
Physiology w/ Histology
Biochemistry
Veterinary Professional Life

Good job, KittyRex!!! I was trying to find the 2012 page but couldn't-- you beat me to the punch! 👍

For Davis it looks and sounds like a lot of classes but it's not quite what it looks like--some of them are once a week (ethics, maybe radiology), some of them are every day (pchem will consume your fall quarter), and some of them are not the full quarter--for us behavior was every day for a couple weeks, then we had a final, then epidemiology started up in week #4. The unit total for the quarter gives you a better estimate of your course load than the total number of classes does.

Don't get too worked up waiting for the schedules--they are not at all consistent in terms of which classes are when so your schedule is different every week. In general lectures are most of the morning and if you have a lab it will be in the afternoon, but once in awhile there may be a morning lab.

Are you saying this in specific to Davis, or in general? I think, looking at NCSU's weekly schedule, one of the most challenging thing for me is the lack of consistency day to day, but it looks like it is pretty consistent week to week

I think it depends on the school, and is perhaps why some schools have more classes listed than others. I know Tufts was a lot less consistent on paper than UW, but I've heard about the lack of consistency week to week from students at both institutions. So perhaps some schools schedule in the inconsistency more while others umbrella it more?

Just Davis, I don't know about other schools' schedules.
