First year fall schedule

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
For Davis it looks and sounds like a lot of classes but it's not quite what it looks like--some of them are once a week (ethics, maybe radiology), some of them are every day (pchem will consume your fall quarter)....

Chaco, your reference to PChem just sent me into sheer panic for a second until I realized you were referring to Physiological Chemistry not Physical Chemistry.

Here's what we're doing in Kansas 👍:

MWR - 8:00-5:00 (lunch 12-1)
T - 8:00-4:00 (lunch 12-1)
F - 8:00-1:00 (or 3:00 depending on elective choice)

Core Classes:
Microanatomy + Lab
Gross Anatomy + Lab
Physiology I
Orientation
Cross-Course Integration

Electives:
Trade and Agricultural Health
The Basics of Bovine Theriogenology
Practicing Veterinary Medicine in a Multicultural Society
Practical Use and Interpretation of Veterinary Scientific Literature
History of Veterinary Medicine
3-D Imaging Anatomy of the Dog
Veterinary Medical Language Cognates and Etymology

Wow you guys start with a ton of elective choices!! Our only elective choice first year is Wildlife.... and a business certification class but I don't think that's technically an elective, just an extra program they offer.

this is so exciting to see schedules!! And interesting to see the differences 🙂

Enjoy Dr. Fails

That's a SCARY name for a professor 😀

UC Davis - Core:
VMD400A Freshman Doctoring
VMD401A The Normal Anatomy of the Canine Locomotor System

VMD409 Epidemiology
VMD415A Freshman Clinical Skills
VMD427 Cell and Tissue Structure and Function
VMD430 Principles of Radiography and Radiologic Interpretation

I like how your course codes are "VMD" 😉

Yeah I had a heart attack when I saw that too. I wish they would just give us a general idea of what class schedules are going ot be like. At the least say your in lockdown from 8-xx time everyday

Enjoy Dr. Fails for your anatomy and most of your neuro classes. She is AWESOME. I am SO jealous but at least I was able to spend the last year with her. Also be sure to hang out with Bog Spavin, CSU's resident anatomy geeks/ rock band.

Dr. Fails? Seriously, what kind of name is that for a 1st year professor!😱

just looking over my schedule.. looks like almost all of my classes are in the same room. That is going to be painful.. i hope they have comfortable chairs

Our lectures are in 3 rooms. Apparently one is horrible as it is set up as tables rather than a theatre style room.

I would love a table! I never have enough room for all my papers.

Don't get too worked up waiting for the schedules--they are not at all consistent in terms of which classes are when so your schedule is different every week.

LOL, well we have to have *something* to obsess over, right? What else are we going to do with all of our "I finally got in and now I have to wait 3 months before it starts" hyperactive energy?:laugh::laugh:

Apply for a visa? 😛

We've been told that our first term is histology and anatomy, with an introduction to basic systems. but, they've not given us any sort of weekly schedule - just a start and end date to the terms. however, they have told us that most lectures are early in the week, with the back of the week set for small-group work.

I found my new answer for all those 'shoudl I go to ____ foreign school or ___ domestic school?'

Go foreign! You'll have something to do in the wait time, because as much as you think it's possible, there will be NO relaxing!

Probably the nicest, coolest teacher you will have all semester. Short squatty little bundle of fire. If I recall correctly all your classes are in one room -- the profs come to you first year. Except anatomy lab of course.

haha I feel your pain with the UK visa...this app is like 15 pages long!!

And as for Glasgow's schedule..I think the times change every week based on labs etc, but the first 2 years are the same 4 classes: Physiology, Anatomy, Biomolecular Sciences, and Husbandry...with cumulative professional exams both years...oh yes..be excited 😀

I would love a table! I never have enough room for all my papers.

Apparently, from what some students told me, the layout/structure of the room makes it hard to see the lecturer and any media they are using in the lecture.

This will, oddly enough, be my first experience with lecture theatres for regular classes.

Fair enough. I checked online for your fall quarter--not sure if you have access to the online system yet but they should show you where to find things during orientation. If they don't, make someone show you because there is a lot of important stuff there (including your schedule!)

Anyway, most days you have classes from 9am until 2pm with a 1 hour break for lunch from 12-1. If you have lab that day it will usually be from 2-5. There are a couple labs that are 1-5 instead, and there are days you start at 10 or even 11, but for the most part I would count on being there 9-2 on non-lab days and 9-5 on lab days. Sometimes you get out of labs early, but you can't really count on that. When exactly you have which labs is dependent on which group you are in; for most labs you are split in half, and then each half will have labs on different days. Sometimes you are in groups smaller than halves.

So, your specific schedules will have to wait until they tell you how to get into CERE (the website where they keep things like schedules), or at least until you know which group you are in, but that probably won't be until after orientation.

Thanks, Chaco! It's nice to have a little better idea of what to expect, schedule-wise.

 omg i literally spent 3 of the last 4 years dealing with the process of getting a green card for my husband, so the thought of dealing with a visa right now makes me want to crawl under the table and curl up into the fetal position!!! it's actually one of the main reasons i decided not to apply overseas last year... great response though! i literally lol'd. sdn is on a roll today.😎

Rising 3rd year at VMRCVM here. 🙂

I don't know the exact times for Va-Md classes but it is something like:
MWF 8am to 1pm
T/R 8am to 3 or 4pm
Haha, I wish it was that easy to figure out! Classes start 8am almost every day. Usually Fridays you are out at either noon or 3...but Monday to Thursday are anywhere in between noon and 5. Most often it's either 8am-3 (early lab from 1-3) or 8am-noon and then 3-5 (late lab). They're pretty good about not having too many "double lab" days where you're there straight through 8am-5pm...but it happens. Usually on Thursdays though. And your classes are different every single day. A little frustrating at times, especially once they start swapping and moving and rearranging things which inevitably happens.

Jglovicz: As far as the electives go, I am taking at least one my first year- another student recommended taking both (we only have 2 options) so that getting the required credits would be a little easier. But I do not want to overload myself right off the bat, so I am only signed up for Domestication- go pass/fail!!
You really should take Embryology too though. It's VERY easy. Dr. Bonnie teaches it and she's AWESOME and the 2 exams are library exams so you have some leeway with when you take them. It really is an easy class and very enjoyable. She LOVES her embryology. I took both and didn't find that they added to my stress or anything. I found embryo to be helpful in anatomy too since I'd never had a development class before and some of the info is helpful for remembering WHY some things are in certain places (like that pesky recurrent laryngeal nerve). 🙂

Anyway, I actually attached my first year schedule at VMRCVM from 2 years ago. This will give you an idea of the organized confusion that are our schedules!

That is the truth! Yikes.
