Hi, I have researched different places for potential externships or internships after my first year of vet school, but I can only find those for 2nd, 3rd, 4th years etc. Does anyone know of any for 1st year students? Ideally something in zoological medicine, conservation medicine, emergency medicine or zoonotic disease research, but I am really open to any opportunities. I have significant pre-vet experience in these areas on my resume, plus references from veterinarians in these fields (these doctors and their facilities do not offer internships for 1st year students, otherwise these would be my top choices, however, I do want to branch out and learn from others in the field as well). I would be willing to go abroad as well if anyone knows of anything outside of the states. Thank you so much in advance!

Email the wildlife epi lab at Illinois. There are students across all years within the lab. The only caveat is that they are Illinois students. I don't know if they would allow in a student from a different school

Feel free to PM me, I did a bunch of zoo stuff the summer after first year!

Hey! 4th year Mississippi State student here. Please check out MSU CVM Uganda Study Abroad program! I did it between 1st and 2nd year! It was loads of fun and we accept students from outside the university. I spent a month in Uganda. I believe the program was cut to 3 weeks to be more doable for people. Feel free to message me if you have any questions.

This may actually be an option for me if I can use some connections. Thank you so much!

That does sound amazing, thank you so much I'll definitely look into it 🙂

You may find luck in reaching out to your local government department of natural resources & wildlife. For the past few years during my summers I have been working as a student affiliate at a government-owned wildlife park near my home here in Canada. We work under a veterinarian performing daily animal care for native & exotic wildlife, as well as assisting with medical procedures and public education initiatives. My position is funded by government grants for university students interested in gaining experience with non-domestic animals (& it is unfortunately restricted to only citizens of my province, or I would extend an invitation for you to apply). Such a program likely would not necessarily be classified as an externship, but could fulfill your interest in working with a vet in a wildlife-based context. I apologize if this is not what you're looking for, but I wanted to add my experience just in case it could be helpful for your search.

Hi, I had not thought of this so thank you so much! It is definitely along the lines of what I am looking for so I am gonna do some digging to see if there is anything like that. 🙂

Hi 🙂 if you’re interested at all in free-ranging wildlife, check out Loon Preservation Committee in New Hampshire. I spent the summer between first and second year there and we did a good mix of fieldwork, necropsy, and triage. They have on-site housing, and it’s a paid position. Downside is that you do focus only on one species so if you’re looking for breadth it may not be the way to go, but I had a really good time and got a lot of cool experience and much of the loon health monitoring goes directly towards conservation initiatives (eg lead regulation)

There are a few zoos doing summer 1st/2nd year vet student programs. Can't say if you'd be doing research, but I would look into those and see what's available these days.
