Hi all, I'm applying to medical school this year. I have lived in Florida my entire life (besides for four years where I attended an out-of-state undergraduate school), and I am hoping to attend one of FL's medical schools.

I have an opportunity to move out of state during my application year. If I did so would this affect my residency status?

No, you'd remain a resident of Florida even if you move elsewhere. For example many college students move to a new state to go to school, but as far as voting/some taxes/residency they stay as the original state.

Not sure if this is the place to post this but I'm currently struggling with my Florida residency status. I grew up in Florida and attended high school there. Then went to college in Massachusetts for five years and I am now working there during my gap year. I have always considered my parents' house in Florida my permanent home but I have just realized that by the time I matriculate into medical school, I will be considered independent (over the age of 24) and I'll have been living and working in Mass for a year. Does this mean I will not be a Florida resident for tuition purposes or for admission?

Thanks in advance!

You should still be considered a Florida resident. I did the same thing (went to a different state for college + gap year) and I am still a resident of the state I grew up in. The years I am spending elsewhere for schooling are considered temporary, with my permanent address still listed as my parent's.

Thanks for the response, efle! I guess my main concern is that it seems like a key part of Florida residency for tuition purposes is having worked/lived in the state for 12 months prior to matriculation. Since I won't be a dependent by then and I'll be working in Mass for the 12 months prior, I won't fulfill that. I think I should be fine for admission purposes though because I'll still be a dependent by that time?
Thanks again!

You might be looking at the requirements for establishing residency in Florida, it's common for states to say you must live and work there for a year before you can become a resident.

Remaining a resident of the state should be what happens by default for someone who goes elsewhere for school or temporary work. Worst case just call admissions at one or two of the Florida state MD schools, I'm sure this is a question they get all the time and can tell you you're fine.

That's a great point about establishing/keeping Florida residency- thanks again for your advice! I'll call around a few of the schools and see what they say.
