FlexMed 2014

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I talked about expanding on my mathematical results and artificially intelligent healthcare delivery systems, i.e., automated vital signs, virtualization software for surgery, and studying abroad in South Asia or Latin America. I am almost certainly being sent to the reject pile now, however, because I just found typos in my third essay. 🙁 I am pretty much dunzo 😱.

I've taken some intro. courses: biochem., biophysics, cell biology, and membrane physiology; genetics, ecology, and evolutionary biology; microbiology, and one semester of gen. chem.

HYP, 3.8+.

@Qurmish,

Are you applying to FlexMed?
Sounds like we're classmates! Haha.

YES! I'm glad it's over. It was definitely one of those "what doesn't kill you makes you stronger" classes.

@Qurmish. How was it applying to the other program in the previous cycle? Do you have any insights you may share with us?

Haha... Come on now. We were not enemies or rivals. It turns out we are actually classmates. That's all.

I didn't mean anything like that. I think it's pretty endearing that you two overlapped so much in life and discovered that accidentally here.

I'm not sure what I could tell you that would be interesting/useful. The faculty involved in HuMed/SciMed were extremely approachable, incredibly supportive, and very passionate about the program. The MS1 and MS2 students from HuMed that stopped by seemed extremely happy and were all very impressive---pretty much everyone of them had a very compelling story to tell and a stellar academic background (as everyone else has indicated... heavy on Ivies, Stanford, Berkeley, etc.)

Other people have said this in the thread but I would reiterate that they legitimately seemed interested in seeing a well thought out and mature plan for how the extra time would be spent. The year I applied there were a couple of people at my school that were rejected pre-interview that were significantly better on paper than me and some of my interview cohort. I would suspect that they failed to demonstrate how this program wasn't just an "easy in" to medical school and that they did not have a track record of interest towards advancing in a specific field.

Choyphin defended Willard against internet bullies and then they found out that they were in several classes together. We've all witnessed the start of something magical.

Looks like the start of a beautiful friendship

Anyone get una entrevista yet?
I'm hella nervous.

Bay Area? Hella... haha

I don't think they've started sending out invitations to interview yet. Wonder if they'll even schedule any interviews to take place in the month of February.

Hold on tight, guys! We'll eventually find out sooner or later 🙂

I'm guessing they won't send out any invites until mid-March.

why's eerreybody on this forum so salty...just observin' a little bit...first, there was arrogant former admit to HuMed, then random hater on HuMed (bacon-grease?)...then everrybody was pickin' on willard, sayin' he has no chance to get in, was a liar, then they bullied him...i just get confused about who is hating what at which time... no offense. didn't mean to pick out the wrong hater... my fault y'all.

i mean...i have never seen this kind of stuff...what's up people...this is just silly competitiveness that has no place here... just let people be people...it's kinda cool tho that choyphin was like, raise up off willard, and they ended up being classmates... my heart fluttered a little on that one...

For what it's worth, I just heard from someone at Mt. Sinai that the first interview invites go out this upcoming week, after Wednesday. This is a legit person who is in the know. So please POST if you get the elusive FlexMed II. I think that they will also send out some rejections at the same time, so please POST if you get rejected.

Ahhh! I have 2 midterms on Thursday. It would suck to receive a rejection right before them...

are you serious... @Willard_FlexMed ..it's cool you found peace with yourself...but Mt. Sinai is known for being different, having different applicants, breaking TRADITION...I thought being a different race was difficult...but if what you say is true about middle school, and being at HYP with 3.8, you defy some tradition and have seen layers of adversity (and did it with no high school, just sayin)...and probably present a unique challenge to the comittee 2...I mean...for real...how do they figure out your application...they might interview you to hear what you have to say or meet you in person.......don't mean they take you tho...but don't mean you out either...

I have been thinkin about your post...I pray for you at church cuz you are a little beacon of light in a very dark world...if you choose to one day tell that story, you are going to capture the world....... Mt. Sinai would lose that little lite to let you go... you a diamond. . .

I believe the active posters in this thread are mainly well-prepared undergrads from prestigious institutions and are in no way representative of the overall applicant pool quality.

Will those who submitted their application earlier get notified earlier about interviews/rejections?

That wasn't how it worked in previous years.

I also doubt that they will send out any rejections until most (or all) of the interview invites have been sent.

^Then I really don't understand why they even bothered saying that they would review applications on a rolling process from October.

If it helps I applied in November and called about the application December and they said it was under review.

A big wave of decisions was just released today for regular applicants. Is FlexMed time finally upon us?

How do you know it was released today for regular applicants (would this be the second round of invitations)? Did you get an email or someone you know did? I applied in December but haven't received anything, oh well I got my hopes up.

To confirm: this is the reasoning my friend gave as to why we would hear something after Wednesday. Keep your eyes open for emails this week.

Bay area all day err day baby!

Represent!

Playing the waiting game's making me edgy... I bet they had a huge increase in the number of applicants this year since they opened the program up to all majors. Hoping that my interview (if I even get one) will be scheduled during my spring break!

To be clear, @stewie_chewie , was your source speculating that FlexMed interviews would come out today based on the observation that regular decisions came out yesterday? Or was there something more about him/her being "in the know" like actually talking to an admission officer?

Patience is the hardest of virtues.

You seem like a very impressive individual and I hope the best for you!

FYI if you look at last year's HuMed thread (http://forums.studentdoctor.net/threads/mt-sinai-humed-2012.928356/page-4), there were several students who reported that their interview invite was forwarded to the 'spam' folder of their registered e-mail account. If you are routinely and anxiously checking your e-mail it would be wise to also look at your spam inbox in case the issue was not resolved.

Ahhh shtap it! Words I don't deserve. No matter what happens with FlexMed, I'm confident we'll all end up where we want to be.

On a side note, the poker club is having "mid-feburary blues strip poker night" tonight! So excited!

^Ah, this is nerve-wracking! I wish they had a definite date so the speculation would stop...

Has anyone tried contacting the admissions office?

Emails are sent! I got an interview offer, so happy! Did anyone else get one?

Been perusing through this forum for a while now. I guess now is a great time for a first post.

Received an interview offer ~20 minutes ago, thrilled, relieved and anxious all at the same time! Best of luck to everyone else!

What were your guys' stats/when did you submit your app?

Ahh... I'm feeling less optimistic now. Congrats to those of you who have received invites! Did they update the invitation date on your embark accounts?

Congrats everyone who got an interview! 😀
