Also, even if they didn't do this officially like an organized date for all people, they do give second tours individually on Tuesdays or Thursdays. I always see John Schoppman coming into Nickels showing parents and students the school.

Remember when you mentioned having a friend who was interviewing on a Thursday. I wonder if you misheard that friend because I think those are days when they have second looks unofficially as tours of the med school again in which parents are with applicants. I always seem them come through Nickels or near the courtyard where the lounges are every thursday seeing as I live on the med school campus as often as i'm there studying for exams. Can't wait til spring break when I'll finally be able to breathe again. LOL. Did you end up going to your UF interview? How was it???

USF is great about offering tours. I remember they let me take a tour over my spring break last year. Many MD schools won't let you take a tour unless you are interviewing, but this is not so at USF.

My UF interview is March 7 and I'm getting nervous that it is just an interview for the waitlist. I'm not sure if I should call and ask if this is the case. I would not be interested in going if it will be for a waitlist spot.

As far as I know UF will accept ppl until their last interview date. Although your interview may be in march they still have spots left to be filled.

From what I hear, this is true. Interview date has no bearing on the amount of consideration given.
I'm a late applicant still waiting for an invite from UF. I know they're still offering a few interviews, but I don't know for how long. I'm starting to get pretty worried.

Anyone know how many interviews are left for the FL schools? USF said they interview through April. However, I tend to think the April interviews would be for a separate bunch of applicants; namely, SMP or MD/PhD if applicable.
I'm just trying to gauge how much time I have left.
If the 3.5 weeks between invite and interview is still the standard, then an invite this week would put me around March 10 or so for a USF interview; i.e. pretty late.

I have no earthly idea as to what's going on with Miami. It sounds to me like they've already got a full supply of potential students, but hey you never know what might happen. At this point in the game, I have to say I'm getting a bit nervous. Someone call me soon!!!!:boom:

USF doesn't do MD/PhD interviews. And a friend of mine is in the IMS program (the SMP) and she interviews in March. I don't if that helps with your question though. 🙂

UF's whole system is not to fill the class until the very last interview date. So, if you have an interview you have the chance to get in or at the least get the hold. The hold is because they gun for Ivy's so bad that when the Ivy's finally get to go other schools and w/draw from UF your spot will open up.

Does anyone know when the last UF interview session is...I saw someone had one on March 7th. I really would like to know when they are going to make decisions on the hold list, (considering I've been on it since September!) and figured I could gauge it on the last interview date. Of course, they will probably take their own sweet time on the hold decisions. It's a bit of a trend that I'm noticing (Miami anyone?).

Dental students (at least here at UF) find out about acceptances on December 1st...med schools need to do that too!!! That way I will know where I am going more than a week in advance. Worried that I am going to start FSU on the 27th and then get pulled off a waitlist a week later...anyone have similar fears? A friend of mine knows multiple people who didn't start FSU in May in hopes of getting pulled off a waitlist, but never made it, and had to apply again! That would be pure hell.

😕

I think the last interview day is some time in mid-March. Agreed about this whole process taking way too long. I'm going to say we all started studying for the MCAT around January of 07 (at least I did), and here we are over a year later still in some stage of the admissions process.

Does anyone know the deadline for FAFSA to be submitted to FL schools? I would think some time in March. It's such a headache to have to wade through the financial aid process without even an acceptance in hand. Here's faith at work for you.

nothing personal, but i dont like being in the same boat as you. 🙁

The last day for interviews, according to an email I received a week or so ago, is March 14.

i know that the adcom for USF met today, so this luck may be too late, but i wanted to throw out some good juju for everyone who'll hear from USF tomorrow--I hope we ALL get in 🙂

GOOD LUCK!

anybody notice how FIU is requiring a cell biology course or equivalent?... What exactly constitutes as an equivalent

My college no longer offers Cell Biology. I looked at various Florida universities for Cell Bio, hoping I could pick it up over a summer. But, at each university, I'd need at least one prereq for Cell Bio that I can't get at my college. Being employed and having a family, I can't transfer for an entire year. Thus, I won't be able to apply at FIU 🙁

Don't let this keep you from applying if you want to. Exceptions can be made at the school's discretion. If you have all of you other pre reqs and a good reason for not being able to have this one, I don't think it will be a problem. I would apply anyway, or at the very least call the school when the next app cycle starts and talk to someone about it. You may also try to find a course that may be somewhat SIMILAR to cell bio. I would think that microbio, molecular bio, or even genetics would be acceptable substitutes, just off the top of my head. If your school offers any of those classes, and you don't have the prereqs for them, just go talk to the department head or the course instructor...all you really need is a basic understanding of biology for them anyway.

3.5 + 32 = No FL interviews for me!

I feel you...34P, 3.84 GPA, and publications and not a single peep from Miami, UF, or USF?? What is up? I can't get any love from my home state!!! Granted, I wasn't complete at UF until 1/3, USF 12/17, and Miami never sent me an email explicitly stating I was complete (but if I check their site, it says my app was confirmed 11/19, and I also called a month ago and was told it was complete and under review)...I'm sick of incessantly checking my email and mail box in hopes of anything!!

I did ask FIU about Cell Bio. The courses you mentioned above might work (they specifically mentioned upper level), but I'm taking my classes at a 2-yr college. I know that's not ideal. However, I'm a nontrad and have a good job that allows me to work 32 hrs/wk while I take 12 hrs of classes. I have to work to feed the family, and the nearest university is far enough away that I couldn't take classes there and keep my job. Sometimes I feel like I'm competing with one hand tied behind my back :scared: (or perhaps I should think I'm holding my hand there, so I can clasp my kiddos' hands 😀).

Can you do a long distance course where you come to wherever the campus is only for test days?

For instance, our masters has some online courses that are similar which people do online as part of the certificate program but they have to take tests on campus.

Sheesh, Those are high stats. Now I don't feel so slighted. Perhaps USF and the like are looking for something different this cycle. How are your EC's? I would imagine they're the standard stuff. Who knows? Perhaps you'll get some attention for some of the last few interview dates. I remember Lifetimedoc had some pretty decent stats last year and didn't hear anything from USF until mid Feb. Granted, that was when REL could call you a week ahead of time, but you never know what might happen. Strange things are happening this cycle.
Also, I don't think you're the only one who has virtually heard nothing from Miami as well. They've been strangely quiet since last fall. Here's to good news!

that's exactly it. You were too late. Why would someone not feel like you weren't interested in them with the fact you turned something in so late. Not saying you're not gonna hear from them, but you have to be honest in saying they couldn't have been your first choices. And you're not theirs. Think about it.

first of all, hello to everyone. i finally became a member because i need some opinions. i received an email from dr. hinkley saying that i need to decide which "campus you will be attending and relinquish your place at the other campus". i really liked both campuses. I'd never been to FL before the interview and i loved the city of miami but felt a more supportive/family atmosphere at boca. thoughts?

Guju,

Thanks for the suggestion. I'll look into it.

ouch!! i had a lot going on in my life at the time of submitting applications (mainly becoming a new dad, working a full-time job, and raising a sibling) sooo, it wasn't like i put these schools on hold...i wasn't able to work on my applications until 11pm at night (finishing around 2-3am each night) and i wasn't too efficient since i started after working an exhausting day....needless to say, i had a difficult time finishing my apps. i submitted all my florida apps in late nov and early dec (and i believe their "deadline" was in january). trust me, if i were a single junior in college with my summer off to chill out, my apps would have been in much earlier. please don't judge my interest based upon my time of my application submittal.

based upon what i have read from other applicants, i feel like my ec's are pretty strong (minus clinical experience; my shadowing experience has been somewhat limited). but i promise you, if i had the time i would have done much more. that was the part of day i enjoyed the most!

To date, no student at the main campus that I've talked to have felt there's been a lack of support. Or at the least they've never expressed such on here or in person. In fact, most people I know who've gone there have had nothing but positive things to say about the main campus. Actually, I've heard more negative against the Boca campus but nothing against main campus Miami Miller. Most of the students that I've talked to on here and from real life family friends find it very chill and like a giant family. Its just that the number of classmates is that many more which is why its more daunting, not to mention the big city atmosphere.

However the big city atmosphere, in my opinion, is what makes it such a diverse place because not only do you have diversity at the student level but you have a diversified patient background in terms of not just personal and racial backgrounds but also the types of clinical cases presented.

Miami's Jackson memorial hospital is a really well known teaching hospital among Fl. hospitals and probably will have a much greater breadth of clinical cases then you'll see in Boca. Also, all the major research centers and opportunities of that nature are in Miami. Boca students can go down there and do research there but why go far when you can have it within walking's reach?

That said, I'd take a look at what curricula style (PBL of Boca or Main campus approach) fits you, what location (Smaller city vs. true big city atmosphere), and class size (small boca class vs. big class), etc. you think will fit you best. What is most convenient for you and where did your Gut feel you would most fit in and would best allow you to maintain your sanity through this insanity we like to call medical school?

So is your clinical weak?? That is pretty significant in Fl. schools.

I know a lot of Fl. schools stress medical experience as almost a requirement that is an unwritten requirement. USF stresses it, FSU stresses it, UMiami stresses it, etc.

If you are weak in that, I'd try to get a clinical job if money is the issue here.

No need to get on the defensive. I don't think they meant any harm by their comments. They probably pointed that out to you because that is the reality of things. When things are turned in the last minute, they don't care about what the reasons were. Chances reduce slimly the slower you take to return things because there are 1000s and 1000s of applicants who are fighting for the same chance as you are for a spot in medical school. Don't take what I'm saying the wrong way though I know the tone may be construed that way on such a message board. It is something that has been stressed a lot.

To put it simply, here's what i would do if you don't get in this year.

You've pretty much saved your info and AMCAS will have your info from a prev. submitted app in file when you start the new app so you won't have to fill the whole thing out. This means that the only thing you'd want to change is update to what you've been doing to change your app or improve your app in there as one or two lines in the PS.. outside of that it won't be much work.

And if you've saved secondary essays on word files just slightly edit those to show what you are doing to improve the app.

My suggestion is that if your full time job is not like that of a previous career where you'd be talking 40 or 50,000 dollar job vs. normal non-education level jobs and if your job isn't in medicine, consider killing both matters with 1 stone by getting a job such as becoming a medical assistant full time in a doctor's office where they will train you regardless of certification or something of that nature.

Or if you have a day off in the week, go once a week to a hospital and volunteer that way. That's my suggestions to you. good luck.

33Q, 3.93 = nothing from FL schools. Before anybody scolds me for applying late, I know. I did. It's my own fault. But some people, (like sasdaddy, I think), have understandable reasons for applying late. Still hoping for some in-state love though. I'd trade 3 of my OOS interviews for one UF interview. Any takers? FSU and USF both interview for a while yet, but I'm pretty sure at this point that UF isn't going to come through for me. Too bad, I'm going to miss Gainesville!

Oh I've always wanted to do that...do you just call them and schedule for a tour....does it only last one day?...thats the only school in Florida that does that?

Life, I feel your pain. LOL, not really because I am older and I am from South FL. Miami is an experience that I will not deny. If your heart screams beach fun, upscale partying, a hospital system where you will be in a diverse setting but a more competitive one then Miami is for you. Now, with that said Boca has a lot of great perks too. It is a little quieter and the facilities are much newer. The hospital experience isn't going to be as diverse as Jackson but will more than make up for diversity with first hand experience and opportunity. I can attest that I probably have seen more open heart surgery than most med students by all the programs and support I have received from Palm Beach County. VERY VERY FRIENDLY.

Funny thing is I am picking Boca no matter what but I still want my acceptance from Miami. LOL, it is an ego thing. I want the choice you know. So you pick Boca so I can pick main and we will switch at the end. 😆 JK.

Hope this helps. Email me if you want some more of my opinion. I am pretty familiar with the Boca program.

UM C/O 2012 UNITE. WE NEED A SECOND LOOK WEEKEND. Come to the UM thread and provide feedback for this. I am going to check up today with the MS students to see were we are with this. PARTY at the Hard-Rock is what I am voting for.

You still have interviews though. i think some of the other people don't have any. That said, they are still giving interviews. Just because people aren't posting on here doesn't mean there's not still offers going out. Just keep updating them til you get an interview.

USF COM is still offering interviews.

I know someone who was accepted this past week. You heard me right. Not waitlisted. Accepted. So there are seats still open. Just keep your head high and keep updating them with new activities and transcripts, etc.

thanks for the advice...it is well appreciated. i guess what i got a little sensitive over was this part

"but you have to be honest in saying they couldn't have been your first choices. And you're not theirs. Think about it."

b/c it simply isn't true on my end. i have received two interviews so far (duke and wayne state) and i submitted their apps laterthan the florida schools. trust me, i'm happy that i have interviews period. i'm just stressing over the fact that i haven't heard a single word from any florida school and i'm hoping to raise my family here. i'll be sure to keep you posted.

Does anyone know if/when Med Schools have spring break? Do they still conduct interviews during that time if applicable?

It's almost Friday and you know what that means; checking my email for any USF action. Come on USF, send me some post-valentines love😍

Well on that part, I will agree with you. Like I said, just keep updating schools. Maybe write a letter of interest if Fl. schools are top choices.

That is strange that you had an interview at Duke but not a Fl. school. Good luck like I said. This admissions process is very flawed and sometimes some of the most admirable people get screwed over. I've seen it happen first hand before.

I don't mean to sound harsh but do you hear yourself? You should so sensitive. How are you going to survive in medicine? I will say that perhaps some schools in Florida, FSU being the longest, have long drawn out secondary applications. But my goodness, UM's was a breeze. I only think Penn State's was easier, actually Pitt's was even easier than that. But still you could have had the UM one out. I didn't get all my secondaries out with the speed of light either, but I sure put the important ones on the top of the pile without thought. All I am saying is that the school might look at you as not being sincere. Now, I turned in a handful of apps via the deadline of Jan 15th. LOL, if I get an interview I will be shocked. Other than that. Keep hope alive if it is meant to be then it is meant to be but in the least keep hope alive.

I wasn't being harsh I was being realistic.

We definently need a second look weekend! Although i will be attending main campus and you Boca, I really wish they offered a formal "second look" so we could all get pumped up!

Hi everyone. I got accepted into USF. I am so happy and excited.

Good luck to everyone. There is still time left in this cycle so don't
lose hope.

Best of luck.

Can we just drop it??? Seriously for the love of god please just drop it. She gets the point.

p.s. about the secondary essays. They may be short essays as I've seen the questions. But some people take quite a bit of time doing the essays because they are very picky about how they want to word things or which particular situation they want to talk about.

For example, in the miami question about any traveling yo've done. I've been all over the place and would have to think about which one I wanted to talk about in the constraints of their limit. I don't know how to explain what I'm trying to say, but I know a lot of people who take time with their essays. So please don't judge.

I would like to second this. We will have to deal with a lot of "realism" (as axlax put it) in medical school and beyond. I've always thought this forum was meant to encourage one another; our common struggle should bring about some unity.

And to agree with GujuDoc once again, just because essays have a small word limit doesn't mean people spend a short time writing them. It is much more difficult to convey a message in 250 characters as it is to convey it in 500 words (if it is about the same topic of course).

yea, i feel you guys on the essays..it took me a while to write them even if they were 500 characters. It's important that they sound great as well as get your point accross.
Anyways, Dendrite, where are you leaning towards?
