Florida Schools Application Thread (2008) part 2

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
They e-mailed me the same thing when they invited me for an interview so I would not be worried.

Yep that's what it was. I'm ecstatic. I literally sent them an update letter this morning, e-mail and hard copy. I wonder if that made the difference. Either way, I encourage everyone to keep in touch as it can't do any harm at all.

Yeah I would encourage the same. Helped a friend a few years ago in the C/O 2010 cycle.

BTW Congrats on the interview. Seeing that you've been accepted to Miami, between one of the 2 Miami campuses and USF, which would be number one choice for you?

USF for sure, but that's mostly because I'm local, and my fiancee is a USF student and has all her family here. Program-wise, I'm not entirely sure. I really enjoyed the environment down at Boca, and I stayed with student hosts that made me really feel I'd fit in down there. I think both programs are on the rise.

Does anyone know when adcoms get back in session? I would imagine as of the 7th, but I still haven't received a reply from FSU regarding financial aid. Then again, with the confusing state of affairs up there it's kind of expected. If anyone could help me out it'd be greatly appreciated. Here was the question I had for them:
When filling out my fafsa there are two options; a 2007-2008 fafsa which covers aid through June 2008, and a 2008-2009 fafsa which begins coverage in July 2008 and continues through the fall. Since I've applied to programs which begin in the fall and to FSU which begins in early summer, I'm confused as to which form I should fill out. I am still on fsu's hold list and haven't heard anything from the other schools, so I'm in limbo right now.

I hope everyone on here is doing well. Glad to see people getting some usf love. Thoffen, when is your interview scheduled for? Thanks and congrats👍

Will Miami give you an idea of where you are in terms of priority on the waiting list if you call?

No. They will say nothing other than the list is ranked. Otherwise, their lips are sealed shut with krazy glue.

When does Miami-Jackson start to have movement on it's alternate list?

thanks

A little past date, but did anyone else get a Christmas card, well to be more politically correct, a "holliday card" from South Florida. I was seriously impressed by a med school actually being personable.

I got one as well. I had to look twice because I couldn't believe that a school would send out holiday cards to applicants. That definitely says a lot about the school.

Any new on UM or USF movements?
How long did you guys have to wait for interviews at these schools after completion of file. It has been a while I have not heard anything from them. Do they call (USF) or email or both? Would a friendly call to check on status help?
Thanks in advance.

USF calls you, and if you are unable to answer, they leave a message and e-mail you asking you to call their office. They are receptive to calls on status checks, but sometimes it is difficult to get a hold of them.

Anybody recently hear anything from UF??? I can't wait any longer for this *likely waitlisted* decision via snail mail:scared:

SoFlaKnight, I interviewed at UF last Friday and was accepted Monday night. However, the admissions staff said that whether you get a call is entirely up to your interviewer and that official acceptances are mailed tomorrow. Good luck!

Congrats STL! Have you decided which school you will attend?

Just got the call from USF COM. I got the higher end of the waitlist. 🙂 Here's to another 4+ months of waiting...Good luck to everybody :luck::luck::luck:

Any insight as to how full USF's class is? If I am placed on the waitlist and don't hear back until May, am I pretty much stuck committing to a school I have been accepted to?

don't know how full they are but what is important is what tier of the waitlist you are on. If you are top tier that means most likely an acceptance some time in mid May to June some point. If upper mid tier, then also a good chance of getting off. If not, then chances are slim.

The good news is you were accepted to both miami campuses and main campus kicks ass from what I've heard. I have yet to hear something bad about them.

I got the "fell just short of automatic in threshold/high end waitlist" too. Is it me, or is there alot of this going around?

The bright side is that you most likely will get off the waitlist.

USF has about 120 seats I think. Of that about 50% of matriculants are waitlistees.

I don't know about Miami but both USF and UF it seems has a lot of waitlist movement.

so don't stress until its summer and you've not been accepted.

SillyMeMD,

At least you are higher up this year then last year so that means you may end up getting in. GOOD LUCK! I'm sure you'll eventually get off and all this work in the masters will be worth it.

I think that is a major accomplishment. I just interviewed at USF on Monday and I am awaiting the results. Many of the students I talked to at the interview were accepted off of the waitlist. I think its just USF's policy to see all the applicants before making too many acceptance decisions. That being said, I still feel the waiting part is so difficult.

I'm not sure. I'm worried about falling lower on the waitlist by the end of the season since we're only in January. However, I'm really happy to at least rank higher than last year.

Thanks. I really hope that this will work out. I remember how LTD felt last year and now I understand why he was so uneasy about the waitlist.

same...i've called them 2 times and it was complete but still reviewing even a month later. (.-.) is there a certain wait period? or is there a ranked review system?

Yeah I know someone who got dropped from 1 to 97 on the waitlist but for the most part most people who were top tier waitlists stayed on the top tier and got in. Don't know what happened to cause that friend to get dropped so low but she's now at another state med school and loving it despite all the hard work that goes into it. Says she's happier then when she was in undergrad.

Nonetheless, most people I know were not dropped to such a lower position so there's a very small chance of something bad happening. Most likely you'll get in.

Wow! I can't believe that she dropped down so far. That sucks! At least it all worked out for her. So, I'm not sure if anybody knows about this but what is the health insurance like for med students. Any dental and eyecare included?

I was complete at University of Miami in early December. I have not heard back from them either. I wonder if they have started reviewing files again after the holiday. Maybe they are meeting sometime this week.

This is a bit ironic. I got into USF and was waitlisted at Miami. I would ideally like to go to Miami due to family, even though I LOVED USF. You got into Miami and you want to go to USF. Do you want to trade 😛

Perhaps we could come to an agreement with the admissions directors. 😀

Actually, my USF interview is Monday, so who knows I may yet get in!

By the by, I hope you get in off that UM waitlist. 👍

hey pandulce.. long time no see. ne word from aecom yet? Im sure youll get into Miami soon enough. Im prety set on being a 'cane myself so hopefully we'll be future classmates.

Its not a FL school but I got into Drexel today. So I am pretty stoked.👍

Pandulce, when did you interview at AECOM? I was up there on 11/14, maybe we met? Also, definitely keep hope about both campuses of Miami. Dr. Hinkley talked to us about how the waitlist is ranked and is expected to have a lot of movement. Maybe call him and see how high you rank on the list. And Congratulations with getting into USF!

UF Acceptance!! I finally get to use the Dancing banana

...and Congrats UFGrad on Drexel:hardy:

I'm sure you'll get off the waitlists eventually. I know someone who was on this thread last year was in the same position and now she is happily an MS 1 and loving it. She had gotten into boca last year but wanted main campus and eventually got it sometime in summer.

I also know there was a guy who used to post as NervousNed. He had really wanted a miami acceptance and eventually got off waitlist. I think he's there now as well.

So it will happen. Just keep up the faith, update them with new information if they take any new information post interview as well.

Hey that's sweet man. Kind of ironic with the whole blue avatar thing. I think guju already pointed out the UF connection. The hard part is over.:clap:

Gators13, there's a strong possibility I'll be attending UF....it all depends on how much I like Emory and Duke (and hopefully some others!) when I interview at those schools and whether I'm accepted. But UF was really impressive and welcoming, so I think it'll be tough to beat! Go Gators!

Thanks everyone! And I want to say congratulations again to SoFlaKnight! It is very impressive, and I wouldn't doubt that he gets more interview offers within a few weeks.

As far as AECOM, Because I interviewed in November, my interviewer told me to expect to hear something between the last week of January to the first week of February. I really liked that school and I heard they give really competitive financial aid packages, but I interviewed there before I had my UMiami or FSU invitations. Now that I have my Boca and FSU acceptances, looking at tuitions of 41K a year and cost of living in NYC is kind of a turn off. Everything else about the school is really attractive and the cheap apartments are a real plus. 👍

same situation as you, ufgrad00. its either mt. sinai, uf or um. tough decision.

Bwahahahaha that's a good tough choice to have. Those are 3 kick ass schools. All of which have been highly ranked before and with amazing clinicals as well as research opportunities.

I think the Mt. Sinai or Umiami would be the tougher part for me but I'm biased cuz I love city atmospheres. 😛

I say wait til financial aid packets or scholarship offers come. Then if the finances are equal use curricula and location to decide. Those are the 3 factors above all else I'd use to make a decision on which school to pick.
