I don't know if this problem was fixed, but earlier in this cycle, I would e-mail this address, and it would never go through. When I get rid of the "lyris" portion, it would work. So the better e-mail of the two to use would be "[email protected]" or like Guju said, you could also try Ms. Amiri or Dr. Koehler directly. I think in this case, contacting Dr. Koehler would be the most effective method.

I am applying for 2009 and i have been email Leila with questions and concerns and been at her office too. Do you think that this will help me to get an edge up on the completition because she knows my name? :laugh:


Also my friend just got accepted to FSU today, after she interview in late April and was immediately put on the waitlist. I guess they real like her. I guess thats not good for those on the FSU waitlist. PM me if you want to know her stats, since she is good friend of my

You're right that a large % of each class' students come from the waitlist and can be >50%.

Is there anything we have to do for Miami to confirm that we are going there on May 15? I seem to remember we had to do something by then but the deposit isn't due until June.

no, as long as you emailed them back saying you accepted their offer, just sit tight.
 
I'm so glad the USF waitlist has started moving!!!! I was out of the country without computer access for a week and it's been driving me CRAZY! :laugh: I'm still waiting to hear back from FSU as well. I guess nobody knows what's going on with their hold list. Good luck to everybody waiting :luck::luck::luck:

I have to choose between attending USF or UF. What are your thoughts on these two schools?

Are you leaning towards one school over another? Both schools are great, but I think USF has more funding coming this year...don't quote me on that. UF budget cuts this year are out of control. $47million across the board, with a good chunk of that coming out of the COM budget.

Just look at what factors are important to you...location, finances, research, etc, etc. In the end of the day, you'll get a great education regardless of which program you choose. Are there any specific factors you're concerned about? My guess is you've had a while to make this decision, so give us the details of what you're stalling on? I'm sure someone on here can give you some great answers.

Let us know what you decide. Afterall, you need to decide by tomorrow. Good luck!

I second what D-bone said. It's really a matter of comfort at this point- both options are stellar. :luck:

(Just make sure you make the decision before May 15)

I don't have the information from the Dean of Student Affairs from USF because this is hearsay from Dendrite. He is probably the most trustworthy person on this site so I am sure it is legit. But I did find some great info on UF's money and allotments. One page of this pdf in particular(p. 70) says that for every $1M in state funding the HSC generates an additional $6M. It is a huge pdf but it is very informative. I thought schools try to sell the applicants, after looking at this pdf I have realized it is all about the faculty and the benjamins of course. :laugh:

Check pg. 77 it says that COM revenue from the state is only 6%of their total.

I got that information from speaking with someone from the USF COM. He had mentioned that the hardest-hit school may be FSU, because they receive the most state-funding, compounded with a lack of a teaching hospital. It probably will get worse with UCF and FIU opening up and getting a chunk of funding of their own.

I heard that figure from a med school faculty member, so I don't have a source. A point was made that the percentage of state funding has decreased over time, although any sort of shortfall is bound to "tighten some belts." It's one of those figures that you have to "take it for what it's worth." I'm all for having cited sources, but this is, like Wally said, hearsay. During the revisit for USF COM, the question of budget cuts was brought up, and the response was that because of the practice plans USF has in place, their college of medicine may not be as hard hit as many fear. I remember hearing it said that UF was in a similar position as USF with respect to the state funding.

From doing some research on my own, it seems like the main campuses for all FL schools will be more hard hit than the colleges of medicine. The biggest changes for the COMs would be a transition from a focus on academic medicine to more on an emphasis in hiring staff that both regularly practice medicine and teach.

I found out that UF was offering me an acceptance invitation on the morning of May 14th. Since the deadline is May 15th, I have to make a quick decision.

Thanks for the advice. Any more help would be greatly appreciated.

How long do students have to decide if they are offered an acceptance past May 15th? 24 hrs or what?

2 weeks.
Here's a related question, (just out of curiosity, since I've already made my decision and withdrawn.) I received an acceptance today. (Wake) I guess, technically, I still have until May 15 to decide, even though abiding by that deadline only leaves me 24 hours, give or take, to make that decision. Am I right?

So did you actually get a call this morning from UF? E-mail? Also, I'm curious if you were previously waitlisted at UF. If so, then we can all assume that the waitlist is in fact moving at UF. Regarding when you'd have to make your decision, did UF not give you a deadline to decide or did they tell you "tomorrow?"

If you could clarify your case, we'd all appreciate it. Thanks and congrats! Again, let us know what your decision is.

No. You have two weeks. May 15 is for those who have been holding for awhile. Beginning essentially now, applicants have two weeks to make a decision regarding offers from multiple programs. The only time that this gets sped up is when school is scheduled to start....say like FSU.....you wouldnt have much time to make that decision.

Also regarding monies for state schools, USF and UF have practice plans and research dollars which generally provide the bulk of the finances needed for a COM. For these schools state money is more like ~7% of their total income. State schools without a practice plan and research are almost totally dependent upon the state for funding. UCF is already working on a practice plan and will most likely have it running within a year.....FIU too is working that direction. UCF is affilitiated with the two major hospital systems in Orlando plus additional facilities that are being built. FIU has several hospitals that they are affilitiated with also. Both of them are blessed with being in those situations with facilities as well as large, diverse populations to serve.
 
I am trying to make the same decision... only I have had a while to think about it. I am really torn on which school I would rather go to. Would you recommend one school over the other and why?

Which has worked with you the best? Where were you most comfortable? Work hard in either and your future is in your hands. They really are two good, but very different programs. Decide whether you want a metropolitan edicuation or a more rural one allowing larger and more diverse patient populations and experiences. Different support for students and the learning experince with technology in the classroom, even if you are absent. Both have very good faculty who will be there for you. Both get good scores on their Step I/II, similar tuition, different cost of living, different opportunities for out of school activities. Different curriculum.
 
hey guys... new here🙂 can anyone tell me if they know how quickly the FSU waitlist moves after today? when i called they would not tell me my ranking. are any of you on waitlist there, and if so were you told the same thing? i was told by admissions that 95% of those interviewed get accepted. i also read on their website that you can be accepted AFTER the may 27 orientation! anyone know how common that is? ahhhh freaking out.

Right on. You'll come out of either place as a competent physician. You'll have the opportunity to match into the residency of your dreams at either school. I'd focus on the other things that REL mentioned to make your decision because they make the experience at each school markedly different.

Do you guys know where do I send the email to withdraw my acceptance from USF?
This was a tough decision but barring anything extraordinary I am officially going out of state to california for medical school :scared::scared:🙂:hardy:.

Just call them to be certain you withdrew today. I wouldn't take the chance. Congrats on Cali...great schools.

...And no word from UF yet? Huh. Anyone hear of people getting at UF? I'm curious how they let people know too...phone call, e-mail, snail?
