i think the whole north/south florida thing is based on south florida earning much more revenue from tourism than the north, and yet the school systems in north florida are much better funded than the ones in the south. personally, working in south florida, many of the schools in and around miami do suffer from a lack of funding. but we all kno this will never happen, they had a similar discussion abt doing this in virginia, by splitting it into south and north VA.

Probably most of the funding goes towards South Beach. 🙄

But yeah you are right. With the exception of certain public schools, they are generally pretty bad.

Hello everyone.

I found out today that I was accepted to the UM
Miami campus. I was previously waitlisted there.

I am looking for a roommate that will be going to the
UM Miami campus.
I really want to live in an apartment that is close to
Jackson Memorial Hospital/UM Miami.

If you are looking for a roommate, please send me
a message.

Thanks!!

Have you dropped your other acceptances yet? Some of us are anxiously sitting on waitlists at some of the other schools to which you have been accepted 🙂

So here's some news regarding waitlists.......

My friend was high tier waitlisted for USF COM like months and months and months ago.

She was told she wouldn't hear til closer to June about the waitlist.

Well yesterday she got the call that she was in and accepted well before June came around.

Then there was another guy I know who was also waitlisted originally and got in just days before her.

so everyone, hang in there. Both of them have dropped FSU accpetances as well. So that will be 2 waitlist spots at FSU opening as well.

meh, north floridians are very different from them. they don't have the "southern accent."

anyway, the separation will never happen.

Haha...I'm a north FL native, and I always get comments on my southern accent when I visit south Florida. The southern accent is pretty common everywhere north of the Ocala/Gainesville area, especially in rural regions.

As for north Florida schools being better funded...if this is true, then I'd hate to see how poorly funded south Fl schools are. I always imagined that the exact opposite was true, simply b/c I can't imagine a school being more underfunded than the high school I went to.

I'd like to see the statistics regarding tourism dollars per resident for north/south Fl. It's true that south and central Florida bring in much more in tourism revenue, but north Fl has some popular tourist destinations as well, while having only a small fraction of the population compared to south Florida.

That is good to hear!!!! Hopefully I'll get a call in the next couple of weeks. :scared: If not, I'll have to go through this whole beast all over again (for the 3rd time 😱)

hang in there sillyMD. whatever you do... don't give up. even if you have to do it a third time. we can do this!

What place are you on the waiting list and how did you do the other time if you don't mind me asking?

paxon and stanton :horns: and we have jaguars.

but true, most of the schools es yoo see kay.

school funding? blame amendment one. i hear crist said that it won't affect public education but look at what's happening, statewide reduction of university admissions, firing of police officers & other positions which is seriously needed in where i live in now b/c of the crime rates, etc etc etc.

i've had this professor and he's from NY, he was joking around and mentioned something about the education up there is better than here.

so i hear FSU does not accept any out of state peeps right?

I just got the call!!!!!!
and it's great to be a Florida Gator, I said it's great to be a Florida Gator!🙂

Thanks letmeinnow! 🙂 I interviewed in November and was put on the high waitlist but now I'm somewhere in the middle. 🙁 Last year, I interviewed but I was placed on the low waitlist. It's been rough because I'm so close but not quite there yet.

well everyone... congrats to those who have heard good news!!!

for those at FSU: i heard today that there are about 60 on the waitlist. not sure how accurate that was though, bc the person i talked to didn't know if there had been any acceptances this week (which we all know there have been...) so take it for what it is.

one day left for us! thank you to those that quickly sent in their "thank yous" to their back-up schools. fingers crossed for all of us!

Wooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooohhoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!!!!!!!!!!

😀 😀 😀😀 😀 😀 😀

Yay I knew you'd get in.

I've had a couple of friends who got off USF's waitlist as well as far as waitlists go. see above post to know more.

Dean Kone at UF has been relieved of his duties effective immediately.

Awesome. But it says he's still part of the faculty just not a dean. but now they should undo the decision he made regarding acceptance of Ben Mendehlson. Wonder if they can do that.

LOL

Did you ever hear from UF?

No word yet, but the waitlist appears to be moving. Fingers crossed!

True. Kone will still be on staff. I think this may be a way to avoid paying a severance package if he were to be fired. This is what happened at my undergrad. Even after the guy got fired we have to pay him close to $500,000😱. It comes from our soda machines.

just playing devil's advocate... but maybe this kid is actually a decent guy... i have no idea... but for the UF kids, think about how awful it would be to be in his shoes... he is going to have to constantly prove himself to everyone... teahcers AND classmates. and i mean, if you could get into medical school without taking the MCAT, wouldn't you? lol?

haha i have a feeling i have opened up a can of worms... let it rain! at least it will get our minds off of.... WAITING!!!

if it was ethical and we didn't know that it would come to light in such an embarrassing way which also was done by over turning a whole committee's decision around. But that is not appropriate for the Fl. thread. Go to the buying your way into medical school for that idea.

He's is a tough spot. He'll have to walk by Kone in the hallways and look him in the eye thinking "this guy lost his job for me." Ugh. A very small part of me feels bad for him, but keep in mind, he did supposedly have his chance at NU and blew it.

wow ouch! nono! that is not what i meant at all! i apologize if it came across like that... i certainly think it is unfair as well. what i was trying to say, and i guess i didn't do a good job of explaining was... maybe he didn't realize the situation. i guess i am trying to hope that someone like that doesn't exist and to give him a chance. lots of people have been accepted to med school without their MCAT. and some without graduating college! you are probably right... that he knew he was getting in un-ethically... but i was just saying... what if he didn't?

I didn't mean to be cross. Its just the last few months has been rather much a debate about this whole situation. so I don't want to bring it up again cuz all other more relevant posts get buried in a bunch of posts about this that when someone has a legit question or news about being taken off waitlists and waitlist movement etc. it gets so buried in this stuff that peope don't even notice those more relevant posts.

Very true Guju. Please bring up the comment in the buying your way into med school thread and will surely be addressed there. If I think hard enough we might have actually addressed that exact topic.

FSU just called with an acceptance.:banana::banana::banana:
I thought it was a joke or a mistake. I'm in shock. I've got to find housing, loans, etc. etc. in a matter of a few days. God help me. Regardless, I'm in shock. Thank God!!!!

Dude, I do not even know you but I am honestly very happy for you.
Congratulations. Enjoy it (you deserve it) and get cracking... orientation starts on Tuesday, right?

one of my friends got into fsu this morning! fsu waitlist is still moving! thats so crazy.

I foresee it moving at least until the first day of orientation cuz if a person attends orientation they are locked in but up to that point people will be getting off waitlsts to go. now if it were an August starting school I think it would be a slimmer chance of up til the last min. kind of waitlist movement although it has happened at USF from what Lifetimedoc has mentioned to me.

Congrats! I am very happy to see all the people who were going insane waiting receiving acceptances. School on tuesday? Best of luck
