I still haven't heard a thing from neither USF nor UF at all. I was complete at USF on 9/4 and at UF on 8/20 (8/23 if you count the date i recieved my latest MCAT scores). Its a little disappointing considering its my own state, but I am not losing sleep over it. 🙂

Yeah, I had all my FL school apps. complete in late August - early September. I have been accepted to FSU, but I have heard absolutely nothing from the other FL schools. I am so happy I go into FSU, but I am also really interested in USF so hopefully they will call soon.

I'm still awaiting the results from FSU. I can't figure out what's taking so long. It seems most everyone else has already heard from them as of the
16th. I interviewed on Sept. 28th and was told that on either the 16th or
17th I would receive the results. I emailed Jamie Callaway yesterday. Hopefully I'll find out what's going on.
Meanwhile...I'm still anxiously waiting for USF to send out an invite, or any other FL school for that matter. By late Oct, early Nov. I should hear something from them; I hope. Congrats on the acceptances guys!👍

Did you interview last week?

Nah, I haven't gotten an interview yet...they cashed my check early last week and I'm complete...I'm just being impatient😳

I met with Dr. Gonzalez and Bryant Fayson from USF Health this last Friday and besides being two of the nicest guys ever, I was really sold on the new integrated curriculum along with the latest USMLE Scores/Match Day residencies👍...'

In any event has anyone heard from Miami!?!...they must be seriously swamped b/c I've only heard of a small handful of interviews and/or acceptances...

man, so miami hasn't told anybody anything...that's really strange!! i wish they would tell us, because when i called they said that my application was complete and currently under review by the AC...maybe they don't start till later. anyone know when they started last year?? 😱

So far I've waited 3 days since the 16th and have heard absolutely nothing from FSU post-interview (Sept. 28). While I have heard of some on here already getting acceptances as of the 16th, does anyone know what this lag in communication means in my situation?

My guess is either:

1) I'm on the wait list. Which would be okay, but why not just tell me? Why leave my emails unanswered?

2.) They haven't yet made a final decision regarding my status. Which would be ideal, but why single me out of many other applicants who probably interviewed around the same time?

I'm just so confused as to why FSU won't just call and tell me what's going on. Anyone else in a similar circumstance with them?
Also, I agree it's kind of strange USF and Miami are kind of silent lately with regards to invites. Hopefully, next week will be different.

how long does UM @ boca take to make a decision after interview?

have you already interviewed? when? i completed my file really early, but i still haven't heard anything from them. i've called, and they said my file is complete and under review (i'm out of state, though)...

Jamie Calloway from FSU told me that they would contact you by phone or email one way or the other. You should call her and see whats up.

LOL. Maybe the people getting the invites don't use SDN. I heard of one of my friends getting in FSU so maybe they put you on hold but they should let you know what's going on one way or another.

Congrats to everyone who got accepted at USF!! Im a little bummed out cause I got the good ole waitlist...weird thing is I have NO INDEA WHY...I've had seven interviews so far and thought that USF's went the best out of all of them. Dr. Koehler called me and told me that they don't accept any updates or anything (once your file is initially reviewed, you are assigned a score and either accepted or waitlisted) Is it just me or is this a bit ridiculous? Certainly there are some candidates who want to attend USF more than others but have no way of expressing this other than a "score" that defines you assigned by the committee..

also, apparently the interviewers arent on the admission committee...all they do it fork over a sheet with a few sentences jotted down on it! So instead of being able to verbally communicate an applicants desire by phyiscally presenting them, the applicant is essentially reduced down to a few words on a piece of paper!

Anyways, I just feel a bit frustrated, especially since I thought I was a solid candidate for USF (in all ways, not just number wise, which are 31/3.75)...it doesnt look like I'm gonna get an answer for a looooonnng time.

I feel your pain. I thought my interviews at FSU were the best I've ever had. One of them even told me I was the strongest applicant they had interviewed so far. Both went out of their way to sell me on the idea of FSU, how I will love it there, yada yada. In the end they both told me they would give me a very strong recommendation to the committee. All that and...waitlisted. Go figure. I think adcoms love the waitlist for some reason. Anyways, I remember the USF waitlist process very well. I thought I did very well there also, ended up on the low end of their waitlist. You can beg, plead, etc. It won't do any good, or at least it didn't for me. I do know one person who was very low on the USF waitlist, had a 3.6gpa, 26mcat, and eventually got in around May. Regardless, they do tend to make waitlisters sweat it out until at least March 15 when decisions have to be made. With your stats I would think you'd be a shoe-in. I agree, waitlisting sucks bad. Don't forget to keep calling them every two weeks or so; that's the best advice I could give you. USF is also my #1 choice; too bad I don't even have an interview there yet. Good luck to you, stick with the process; with your stats you'll more than likely get in eventually.

Why would he keep calling if they explicitly told him they don't accept updates?

Are you talking about FSU or USF??? FSU March 15 decisions maybe. but May 15 for all non summer starting schools like USF Miami and UF.

Getting off a waitlist in may at USF would put you on the high end of the waitlist but low end at FSU.

I'm confused.

At least you got into Miami. 😉

I know it sucks when you think you are going to get in and end up waitlisted but at least you got into Miami which is a kick butt school!!

I am confused about one thing. Are you saying they don't take updates regarding new things in your profile postinterview or also preinterview but post completion of your application??

If it is the former case then I can see that being true, but the latter situation I described would be new cuz in the past they let people send updates preinterview.

Thanks for the support😍

Btw, I really do hope you get an interview at USF...I've been reading your posts on this thread for quite some time and you seem like a really great person and undoubetdly a great applicant...I hope you hear back from USF soon!

Hey gujudoc, thanks for the support...I was acutally talking about POST-interview updates because I know schools that encourage updates if you are waitlisted in order to show interest...itmakes sense to me because if I was on an admissions committee, I would choose an applicant that shows a genuine and consistent interest in a school over an applicant who doesnt show any at all (even if the latter had slightly higher numbers)...

Yeah but sadly most schools don't let postinterview updates. Of the Fl. schools I think the only two that it would help for are UF and FSU because they put a lot of people on hold and don't make official waitlist reject or accept decisions til later for a lot of candidates.

I am sorry to hear but I know it happened to a lot of my friends who've interviewed earlier unless they were like top of top of the line applicants i.e. 35+ MCAT scores, 3.8+ GPAs and tons of ECs. Not everyone but definitely many.

I know when my friend (now an M1 at UF) interviewed last year she was told by various different schools updates post interview would not make a difference. UF was the only one that encouraged it. She didn't apply to FSU so they don't count.

So take what you will of that. USF should do a hold and assign official waitlist later like how UF does but right now they don't do that which is a bummer. Good luck with the rest of your schools that you are waiting on though.

I'm confused.

FSU as far as March15. On their site they actually say that they might not notify all waitlisted applicants until June. I'm thinking, how in the world do they expect you to find housing, loans, etc. when classes are already in session? Regardless, I have heard of some people not getting into USF off the waitlist until June as well. This, albeit, is probably the exception and not the norm. Like I've been saying, why schools waitlist one person and accept another is very mysterious to me. But I do know that a good portion of each class for many schools have been waitlisted applicants as well, so there is a good chance you'll get in if you stick with them. I believe sometime in March is the magic day when all applicants are supposed to make final decisions regarding which school they plan to attend. Hopefully, somewhere in the shuffle of applicants spots will arise and your name (number more aptly) will be chosen.
I'll be the first to tell you it sucks to go through all the hard work of undergrad, complete the mcat, do all the EC's and nail your interview only to be told to get to the back of the line. Suffice it to say, those that have already been accepted outright, you should be EXTREMELY happy and grateful you don't have to go through the seemingly endless hell of waiting months on end.

I'm sorry you have to wait for a decision. I know it's a tough position to be in especially if you are interested in a program. I was waitlisted myself at USF and didn't get in until May 13. I have several comments to make about what you posted earlier. 1) True, you cannot submit additional materials after the committee votes on you, but I am surprised that you think this is somehow inappropriate. First, what would you submit after the fact that you couldn't before the committee votes? Second, can you imagine hundreds of people sending stuff in after the fact? There's barely enough time for the committee to vote on people normally. 2) You are not correct in assuming that all interviews are reported on just by faculty turning in a piece of paper. Almost every committee member interviews applicants. There are just too many interviews to be done to have committee members only do the interviews. 3) You can get feedback about why the committee decided not to admit you right away. Each primary and secondary reviewer for each applicant fills out a form that essentially lists your strengths and weaknesses. Contact Dr. Gonzalez or Dr. Koehler to find out where you fell short.

Again, I know the waitlist sucks. I've been there. Your rank on the list doesn't matter so early in the game. Good luck and hang in there.

Yeah it is fairly common for schools not to take updates post interview. This is the reason that a friend did her interview later with USF when she didn't get in EDP and was offered a second chance. She felt she was better updating them before interviewing and having strengthened those portions of her app that were weak before walking in then rushing into a second interview and feeling like she would be screwing herself over.

She ended up high tier waitlist but got in eventually.

I think it is fairly common for schools not to allow updates postinterview. The only situation where they do allow it is if they've put you on hold and not on a waitlist. USF doesn't do the hold system like UF or FSU. So it is useless for them or Miami too. But UF puts majority of applicants on hold and makes a decision at a later date because they like to have a bigger sample size of interviewed applicants before making final decisions about waitlist vs. out right acceptance.

Why would he keep calling if they explicitly told him they don't accept updates?

Not calling to give update; he should call at least once a month or so to find out where he is on the waitlist and where he stands concerning an acceptance. I remember when REL was the director at USF that he encouraged waitlisted applicants to keep in touch to check up on their status. Granted, it probably won't matter very much, and the situation for the most part is out of your hands post-interview, but if you call them every so often they understand how serious you are about the program. I'm just going by what a friend of mine said after he got waitlisted at USF. He eventually got in.

Still no love from UF/USF. All of my interviews are from mid-tier OOS schools that are more expensive than UMiami. I probably will end up dropping them all and wait and see if any top tiers interview me.

Is anyone interviewing at the Boca UM campus on Thursday?

I also hear back from the UM Miami campus on Thursday.

Oh how I wish didn't need to go to work this week.👎

Which school is your first choice?

In Florida, my first choice is probably UM in Miami since it is close to my family and I hear amazing things about getting your training done at Jackson Memorial. However I really really liked USF, so if the price is right it will be a close call.

CONGRAT to all of you, you all are so lucky. Good luck

The more often you call doesn't make a difference. Your waitlist position is SOLELY determined by the votes you got during the committee meeting following your interview. Nothing can change that. You do have control over how the committee sees your interest in the school prior to your interview and during your interview, however.

Do you think mailing a letter of intent, or a general letter detailing USF COM as my #1 choice would be a wise course to take pre-interview?

Last i heard they were only gonna matriculate 40 students and give them all full rides.... sounds mega-competitive.

Think it'd be worth the shot?

I don't think it can hurt you to do so. Keep in mind, a letter of intent means you are serious about accepting that school if you get admitted. You can't send a letter of intent to multiple schools. Schools take this seriously so don't just go sending a letter of intent to anyone just hoping you'll get in.

FIU opens next year too!!!

Yeah unless it is state schools or a school you would absolutely want to try your shot at and would go to Miami over, I'd not waste time interviewing.

Pandaluce,

GOOD LUCK ON THURSDAY!

...still no interview invites 🙁

And congrats to all the future MDs!

You know I wonder how high their averages will be because its kinda like on one hand.....

It will only be preliminarily accredited and a lot of people are more iffy to go to a school which is only preliminarily accredited.

But on the other hand, its different then FSU when FSU was in this situation because it has a lot of already established teaching hospitals including FSU's ORMC and Nova's Fl. Hospital system both in Orlando.

And on the other hand, the free tuition is a bonus.

What do you guys think? Do you think it will be like FSU where the averages are somewhat lower to begin with or that it will be more comparable to USF from the get go?
What about FIU??? They are opening next year as well. Both already have websites up for their med schools but still waiting for Feb. to roll around and get their prelim accreditation to put more info about admissions and curricula.

It will be awesome to have 6 MD schools in one state. That being said, while your chances will be somewhat brighter, I still think admissions will always be cut throat. There are so many thousands of premeds on each FL. I haven't heard too much about the FIU program. From what I've heard at USF everyone is pretty excited about the UCF school opening next year. While it might not be fully accredited now, I think it's a given that full accreditation will be right around the corner. UCF is in a really great position since it basically has ORMC next door and affiliations with many teaching hospitals in the state. I think in a matter of a few years it will be comparable to USF in terms of numbers of applicants and admissions requirements. Which kind of makes you wonder about FSU. It will be interesting to see how ORMC handles that situation; doesn't UF also have dibbs on ORMC? Would be fun to talk to REL again. And the free ride is obviously an incentive. Imagine someone writing you a $200K check!

Hey Guju, USF was great.. everyone was really nice and the opportunities there are endless.

Yeah I see your point. I was posing those questions because I know when FSU opened there averages were 25 roughly for MCAT and slightly lower GPA. Of course their aims were slightly different in the kind of people they were looking for in terms of wanting people interested in Primary care and wanting to recruit some more disadvantaged/URM groups and so forth. So they have traditionally tended to be more forgiving since their inception.

That said, I definitely agree with you about UCF though I don't know much about FIU.

Like you said, it will definitely be interesting to see how it affects UF and FSU people who do stuff through ORMC when the UCF class gets to its full amount of people.

REL,

If you are reading this, how many years will they take to get UCF to its full 120-125 capacity?? By how many seats are they going to increase it each year???

I think increasing the number of seats in increments as they are planning on doing for FIU and UCF and did with FSU when it opened is a good thing because it still keeps it competitive rather then taking any old person as LECOM was doing when they opened.

Hey Guju, USF was great.. everyone was really nice and the opportunities there are endless.

Glad to hear you liked it. Did you interview yesterday??? I saw some interviewees passing by the courtyard where the bookstore is. I was sitting at one of the benches out in the courtyard. The indian girl sitting with 2 east asian girls and a caucasian girl by MDL 1005 (Our classroom for the masters). did you see us? Then you'll have seen me.

If you PM me I can add you on facebook.

But yeah I agree that USF is doing more and more to improve upon their program and facilities each year.

In Florida, my first choice is probably UM in Miami since it is close to my family and I hear amazing things about getting your training done at Jackson Memorial. However I really really liked USF, so if the price is right it will be a close call.

Yeah that would be a tough decision especially considering that if Miami gives you a partial scholarship money will be the same in terms of cost of tuition.

I have also heard amazing things about Miami. I've actually seen some clips from the kinda cases they had in the trauma room which were posted on youtube by one of the 4th years who posts on here. I've also read his blog and heard a lot from him on the random non MCAT threads that have been started in the MCAT forum.

I've also heard great things about the school from old family friends and other people I know who've had experience with the school.

What sort of impression do you get with the COM at your own alma mater: UF??

Just curious. if you were to get into all 3 major Fl. MD schools: UF, USF, and Miami would Miami still be number one over UF?? Just curious to hear what other people's impressions are regarding UF COM. I'm asking because of something that happened recently.

USF and Miami told me yesterday that they are currently going through a large bundle of packets as we speak and that a buddy of mine and myself are in that bundle, so I think up till next Friday is gonna be good to those of us who were complete in this last month or so:luck:

I just wanted to clarify something.

A few posts where I was asking about people's impressions of UF, I was not implying something serious on a larger macro scale happened to the school. I was just referring about something that happened to someone I know on an individual level. I don't want to say more on a public forum for privacy reasons. sorry guys. Hope I didn't freak anyone out.
