Well, I talked with Dr. Hinkley and although he couldn't tell me if I was accepted or not because of the AMCAS rules, he told me if UM is my first choice I can cancel my other interviews. Which I imply, I am going to be a doctor. 🙂

Of course, I am not canceling anything until I get the official e-mail on monday.

Congrats. I think a few years ago when they still had the web status page thing up and running they had accidentally leaked out some people's acceptance news before they were supposed to then they changed it again cuz they didn't want to get in trouble. hahahaha. LOL.

Yeah so anyhow, if you do get the official email I'd cancel the out of state interviews since it seems you are not interested in leaving Fl. As per canceling potential Fl. school interviews if you get them from other Fl. schools well that is dependent on whether you are not 100% sure that Miami is the only place you'd consider going.

I am soo nervous. I find out from USF on Monday... but that is also the day of my UM interview. Now the questions is, is it rude not to answer the phone when they told you they would be calling? I feel like I can't pick up on another school's interview day... eek!

Well I think that it doesn't matter whether you pick it up right away because I have known people who have not picked it up right away due to class or other things going on. It is not like they are going to take away the offer. They understand that people have other things going on during the day and might have to call back. That being said, if you are really that concerned I'd call Dr. Koehler and inform her of your situation tomorrow. she might not tell you in advance but at least it would be a heads up about why you won't be picking up the phone right away.

a buddy of mine called and said the admissions people meet twice a month to decide on who gets an interview.. and that they are supposed to meet next tues or weds.. hopefully we will all hear something next week 🙄
Thanks for the info🙂 that would be nice...

She 100% won't tell you ahead of time. It's against the national rules to do so. Dr. Koehler understands that not everyone is available every second of the day to answer their call. She will probably just leave a message for you to call her back. And that's what you should do. No harm in that.

No prob on not picking up. They should leave you a message to call back and also send an email letting you know to call back....at least this is the way I did it.

Make sure UM is IT for you before cancelling others. Make sure you understand what the differences are in the other programs in the state. They are all mostly different in the progression of the curriculum, live patient contact, and of course patient load/facility variety, and student support. Follow-on residency positions from UF, USF, and UM are equal; likewise, research at any of those 3 is generally equal --- each has their areas of strong focus; cost should not be a huge factor (unless you get a full ride??) nor should LCME STEP scores -- all are above the national average and rising.
The "home turf" effect is helpful to some, less so for others. Just make sure that you "know" that UM is THE program for you based on fact and not propaganda.

I have a question about the time it takes to recieve an interview from Florida schools. On september 18th I recieved an email from U Miami that my application was complete, and on FSU my application was complete on the 29th. UF and USF took a while to let me know I was complete just sending me emails last week, even though my applications were completed and rec letters sent in mid september. Does it usually take several weeks to hear any decision about interview? I recieved my first Interview with Albert Einstein only 9 days after the confirmed my completed application.

I really appreciate any answers that can be offered.

Hi REL, quick question for you if you know the answer.

Would USF be receptive to a letter of interest? They are my first choice, and I am a Tampa local. I want to do everything I can to get maximum consideration since I am a non-traditional student without a perfect profile. I also want to personally thank them for helping me solve a problem with my LORs that turned out to be an interfolio glitch. Though it set me back 2 weeks, they were extremely helpful and I want to show my gratitude.

If, however, it would end up in a trash bin because they are undoubtedly very busy, then I would not want to waste their time by sending it.

Thanks in advance, and go Bulls! I'm going to the USF-UCF game tomorrow, and I can voice a smidgen of support for UCF if you help me out. 🙂

unfortunately they arent kidding when they say you may not hear from them until March 🙄
I'm still eagerly waiting to hear from all the Florida schools (and I was complete in July).

Hi ufgrad00,

I had all my materials submitted to Miami on 9/27 and received an interview invite on 10/8 if this helps. I have not heard word from USF, but I didn't get a complete notification until yesterday because of an interfolio problem.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what's going on either with my apps at UM and USF. I got an interview invite from UF already last week, but still have not heard from either UM or USF. Kinda of strange, but I guess I just have to wait?

They are different schools with different missions and totally different and thorough secondary applications. It's hardly safe to assume that since you got a quick interview with a school that has "better stats" that you will get a quick interview at another school.

That said, congratulations on your Florida interview! You must be a competitive applicant, so don't sweat the Miami/USF responses. There's plenty of time to receive an interview.

Cool, thanks for the reassurance. I suppose I was under the impression that since I got an interview with the "better stat" school, I should've gotten a quick one with the others. Hopefully I'll get them both eventually.

Regular admissions number. Called early in the morning and got lucky because Hinkley picked up. Call and say you want to speak to him. If he isnt there, Email and put "Dr. Hinkley" on the subject bar. It will go directly to him, agnes will not open it.

Hey Greg, Congrats on Miami!

I was just wondering because I interviewed there on the first day and I just called and the lady read the status as, "There is no decision yet"

Does that mean I'm waitlisted...even though they weren't supposed to make the decision on Oct. 5th? The lady said that doesn't necessarily mean you weren't accepted...Im soo confused!

The woman isn't going to tell you anything. If you want to find out prior to the 15th you have to speak to hinkley himself or maybe Agnes. Another person had this same problem. He is sometimes hard to get in touch with. Since today is friday, you might as well wait for the real decision on monday.

I have heard that USF has received a record number of applicants this year and that they are not very far through the pile. I am not sure about other Florida schools but if that is true it might be a while before you hear back for an interview. I unfortunately did not get my AMCAS in until a week ago so I am expecting to get interviews (if I get interviews being this late) in March:scared: I think the new CBT MCAT has really changed medical school admissions. Applications can be finished much sooner and more people are able to take the mcat.

Yea...i was gonna do that but the wait is killing me! So i just called Agnes and she said they have a decision for me! She said I'll get an email followed by a letter in the mail on the 15th...is it just me or does that mean acceptance?!!?

I don't interpret that as meaning an acceptance. The email and letter could both say waitlist. Not trying to be pessimistic, just realistic.

It is true that USF has a record number of applications this year, but I don't know about the admissions office being that behind in going through them.

I'm constantly amused that the majority of applicants think one school has "better stats" than another. I don't know myself who has "better stats". I am pretty sure all of the Florida schools produce similar board scores, so who really cares? How you do on the USMLE Step exams mostly reflects how good of a standardized test taker you are and how much you crammed in your brain the 3-4 weeks prior to the test anyways.

Your letter of intent certainly won't end up in the trash. It will go in your file that the Committee reviews. I'm glad to hear you are considering USF.

Thanks Mike. Are you a med student at USF?

Thanks Mike. Are you a med student at USF?

He is a 4th year at USF med and on their admissions committee. He's been around SDN since before he started med school. Only this year more active in this thread. I'm guessing that is either because of his position with adcom or because he's a fourth year and has more time to help out on such a thread or a combo of both. 😛

This is a good post. I think REL put it nicely a long time ago. A school that has higher board scores might be because the students who make up that school are a bunch of people who are better at taking standardized tests. I'm sure that if USF or Miami had their original pick of people without people with higher stats dropping their acceptance offers to go to higher ranked schools, then their board scores would be comparable to those who have higher board score averages.

The other thing is that some schools like UF and Fl. schools might give the averages but other schools across the nations don't necessarily give open information so it is hard to gauge anything useful by trying to compare board scores as not all places have the stats readily available.

At the end of the day this last line is the most important: IT IS UP TO YOU AS AN INDIVIDUAL HOW YOU DO. You put the work in and if you are also a good standardized test taker and know your stuff you'll do well but it is dependent on the individual

Unless one says you can drop other interviews I wouldn't call that an indication of things.

Yeah, I'm not exactly sure what's going on either with my apps at UM and USF. I got an interview invite from UF already last week, but still have not heard from either UM or USF. Kinda of strange, but I guess I just have to wait?

Keep in mind that UF interviews a lot of people but does not offer out right acceptances to everyone it interviews. Most applicants especially fall interviewees get put on hold post interview and decisions get made at a later date in spring often times. sometimes this means an intermediate of an alternate list position and then an acceptance. Some people I've known in the past never got taken off hold to get an official acceptance, rejection, or waitlist position..

Other people I know got interviewed, on hold, and then months and months later got a rejection.

Secondly, I'd like to point out that while people with higher stats generally get interviewed earlier at schools like USF and miami as well, keep in mind that they really do focus on wanting the person who has a 35 4.0 and tons of great ECs in the clinical and non clinical volunteer setting, as well as other types of ECs such as research or unique talents such as performing arts which you've continued with or other such things over the person who has a 35 4.0 and may be cookie cutter in other aspects or have no ECs at all. In other words, what they are looking for is well roundedness and since it is rolling admissions other considerations may also be when you were complete there and what not in relation to other schools.

Bottomline: this process is subjective and more complex then it seems on the surface.

Only 2 more days Until I find out what's going on with FSU. I'm still dying to get an invite from USF, but from the looks of things it seems I'm not the only one who hasn't heard from them. It's still relatively early in the season. Here's to great news on Tuesday (FSU) and a hopeful invite sometime in the next few weeks from USF (PLEASE!!). Good luck to others getting results around the 15th.

More important then a letter of intent would be to do more volunteering in a clinical and nonclinical setting and keep updating USF with new activities you've done. If you've taken new classes and you haven't gotten an interview by end of fall semester then updating with better grades will also help you.

correct me if im wrong but for UMiami, they tend to fill up the class early on and then a lot of spring interviewees are interviews for spots of the waitlist?

I was told of at the interview by Dr. Hinkley that this early, its either they make a decision or they wait to make a decision. In other words, is there even a waitlist this early on? I thought the fact they dont have a decision is synonymous to waitlist kinda and that a decision most likely means an acceptance or rejection (though seems to me rarely the latter)

👍👍 to this post. I agree with this post especially the very first post. I think it is good to at least interview at the other fl. schools before making up your mind officially if you are given that opportunity and don't have some major reason why you wouldn't be able to make it up for the interviews at the other Fl. schools.

I say this because the friend I always mention that is now at UF med always tells me that she loves it at UF med soooooo much but she wouldn't have had this opportunity if she'd just taken the easy way out through 4+4 at USF and not really explored what each individual school is about before making up her mind. Likewise, I've known people who've ended up at USF and said it was the best decision for them after exploring UF and Miami and getting acceptances at all 3. And same with miami. So make sure you know what will be best for your personality and way of learning.

I don't know anything about that. I know that USF has been known to put people on the waitlist who've interviewed earlier in the cycle because they were unsure whether they wanted them in or not. But I don't know about miami.

I have my Miami interview on Monday. I read in the interview forum that some people were asked about International healthcare. What exactly could they ask us pertaining to that? Also, did anyone recently interview at Miami? What was it like and what should I expect. I believe it is open file, so I should know myself pretty well 😉

This was taken from the latest entry of Interview feedback from the 7th of October this year. I think that was this past week the entry was made. Didn't check the actual interview date.

What do you think is the biggest problem in US healthcare? What would you do to fix it? What about internationally? and how would you fix that?

I'd look through the interview feedback on this website to get an idea of the questions. I'd say from the 3 that I just glanced over from this year the questions listed in the most interesting questions were more questions based on things they've said about themselves regarding likes and dislikes or something pertaining to their profile. So it is a safe bet to say that one should know their profiles very well.

I'd browse through there to prepare yourself for the interview in terms of questions. I'd also look at the mentor forum thread pertaining to info about different schools to get some perspectives about how the school is structured and background info on the school if you want some info to take with you so you can ask questions about the school. Ok hope that helps.

Essentially regarding the international healthcare question, I think that all they were asking was what you think the biggest problem with international healthcare is right now. At least that is what I garnered out of the Oct 7th entry on SDN interview feedback.

I suppose that I'd say that if I were answering that question. That it comes down to lack of access on both fronts. Only on the international front it is complicated by various issues such as poverty beyond some of the worst poverty faced in America. Many millions of people suffer living on the streets and not even having a roof over their head, access to clean water, clean food, those in Africa and India and other underdeveloped nations also have lack of access to basic things that would help them fight off a lot of infectious diseases that become fatal and even if you don't consider the fact that they lack basic vaccines these same nations have some infectious diseases that are not prevalent in america also based on the fact that those microbes don't grow in the more northern atmospheres of north america but grow along places like the equatorial line so they cause big problems in those regions.

But I guess in summary the biggest issue has to be lack of access to basic healthcare needs on a preventative front as well as treatment side. To reduce and combat problems overseas access to cleaner and more sanitized food and water sources are needed, better access to nutrition meaning adequate food from all the food groups are needed, access to vaccinations are needed, access to basic medical tools are needed. Better housing developments are needed too. Also, public health safety education needs to be implemented. On the nonpreventative front, access medications like antibiotics and antiretrovirals are needed. More doctors and nurses, better medical facilities and treatment centers are needed.

Has anyone had trouble e-mailing USF? I have tried to e-mail them and my e-mails keep getting returned. I am frustrated so I am going to call tomorrow, but I was just wondering if anyone knew what was going on.

My interviewer asked no questions like that. He was very nice and only asked questions about my activities, why a doctor, and questions about by ec's. Overall very laid back

Appreciate the assist Mike. Your LOI will be placed in you file as Mike notes, however, in reality SO many say "you are my first choice" that dont really mean it that the LOI's really arent trusted. Some applicants send the same letter to multiple programs (I've received letters addressed to other schools). In the end they have very little dependable value.

Mike or REL,
This is my main reason for withholding submission of an LOI, but do adcoms put much effort into picking out the sincere LOIs? If the letter is clearly sincere is it given value?
There's one school I would definitely choose over any of the other schools I applied to, but I don't want to send an LOI and have the adcom think "oh, here's another kid putting on a facade and begging for an interview." 🙄

Thanks, Mike, Guju, and REL!

If it's in the "can't hurt" category, I guess I'll send it and also keep them up to date about my current activities. Hopefully my sincerity will be obvious; I will identify exactly why USF and point out how involved I am with their community already.

I spent a few hours with the person in charge of looking at our secondaries at USF this past weekend. She said that every week she goes over every application again and ranks them against each other. She then looks at the few on the top of the pile and they get invited to interview and they do this every week. I told her that my secondary was officially complete in mid September. She then said that that is about how far they have gotten so far in reviewing submitted applications. So don't get too worried like I was if you haven't heard from USF yet and your app was complete a few weeks ago. Hopefully we will all be getting a call soon.

What is the best way to update the admissions office with your current activities? (email, snail mail, phone call) Also what activities would be important , other than grades at the end of the semester?

Good luck to everyone who will hear about their admissions today! I hope to stay in florida too.

Probably email. If it is for USF and you know Dr. Koehler's email then email her personally rather then the admissions link or Dr. Hinkley personally if it is for Maimi. Probably Robyn sheppard is the best to contact for UF and Jaimie I believe is the name of the person in charge at FSU.

As per what one should update, both UF and USF in the past have considered any new activities such as new volunteer activities you've been involved with, new extracurriculars, new clinical experiences you've had. So for instance say you go on a 2 week med mission trip during christmas break you could update with that info. If you've recently started volunteering with a hospital or shadowed you can add that info. Things of that nature. Anything that can help your profile. I don't know if Miami considers updates but I know USF and UF both do and they actually encourage it a lot. I know that UF even told one of my former classmates that they should update even postinterview if they get put on hold and should do different kind of volunteering activities like habitat for humanity, red cross volunteering, working with homeless people or tutoring, etc. That kind of stuff always looks nice. Also if you nave any new research experiences such as poster presentations, conferences having attended and presented at, publications that have recently gone through, you can update those things too.

Has anyone had trouble e-mailing USF? I have tried to e-mail them and my e-mails keep getting returned. I am frustrated so I am going to call tomorrow, but I was just wondering if anyone knew what was going on.

call Dr. Koehler at (813)974-2229 and ask her what is going on or if you could have her personal email rather then that admissions email on the website. I know when REL was the admissions director I used to just give his own email address rather then the admissions email to people and I believe that is what people used a lot.

BTW peepz today is the 15th for any of you who aren't at other interviews and getting acceptance news today please do share. GOOD LUCK!!!!!!! 😀:luck::luck::luck::luck::luck:

This might sound stupid, will they print off an email? Emails are kind of unofficial so I wasn't sure.

accepted at miami! woohoo!

hope you all hear some good news as well!

Got this from the acceptance thread:

University of Florida
  • Jingalicious (called on 10/15, interviewed 9/21)
  • josh999123 (10/15, IS, call)

Congrats to them.

It sucks when I am going to class at SHANDS and see the interviewees walking around. I am hoping to be in their place soon.
