Alternate list at Miami ... what a bummer 🙁

USF and Miami told me yesterday that they are currently going through a large bundle of packets as we speak and that a buddy of mine and myself are in that bundle, so I think up till next Friday is gonna be good to those of us who were complete in this last month or so![]()
Alternate list at Miami ... what a bummer 🙁
i just had my usf interview monday and i think they called me about two and a half weeks before that for the invite.. my buddy just got the call for a usf interview today, and it is scheduled for nov 19... so i guess thats where they are at now. As far as miami goes, I called yesterday and was told I am "under review for an interview", which was different from the preivous ten times ive called and theyve said Im "under review". Im sure they mean the same thing, but who knows. Agnes also said they are meeting this week and I should recieve a response via email sometime soon.
When I called Miami today, the person on the line said the same thing "under review for an interview," but like you, I only heard either "In committee for review" or I would hear "under review." So there very well might be something significant with the review for "interview."
Does anyone know if USF sends a wave of interview invites in one day or over the following few days...Ex.) They review packets Tuesday and call those that they're interested in the next day (Wednesday) or do they call those selected over the subsequent few days...I ask this because a buddy of mine who was complete a few days before me received an interview today and we were both told we were in the "to be reviewed for an interview" pile. Am I being overlooked for better candidates/packet swirling down the drain or am I likely just a little deeper in the stack and haven't been looked at yet (see also: have to wait another week or more)...
I am concerned about USF for one thing.
I work from 9 am to about 4 to 5 pm Mon-Thurs and it is a fear of mine that they may have tried to called my house, or will call while I am away. Also my cell doesn't work a lot while I am at work. So I am obsessively checking my voicemail while at work. Does anyone know what they do if they cannot contact you by phone? Will they keep calling, leave a message, or email you?
They will leave a voicemail and send you an email around the same time letting you know they want to interview you and asking to call them back. USF admissions office is very hands-on and efficient. 👍
Does anyone know the format of the interviews at UM Boca. Is it one for an hour or 2 for 30 minutes? Do they ask the same questions as at the Miami campus? Thanks!
Has anyone had a recent interview at UF, and if so how is it set up?

I don't think it can hurt you to do so. Keep in mind, a letter of intent means you are serious about accepting that school if you get admitted. You can't send a letter of intent to multiple schools. Schools take this seriously so don't just go sending a letter of intent to anyone just hoping you'll get in.
i wouldnt be worried about writing a letter of intent just yet.. it usually takes a couple of weeks before you hear back from a school, and youve only been complete a few days.

Anyone familiar with adcom voting procedures? I'm sure it more than likely varies among schools. Does one need a 2/3 majority vote for an acceptance? Do they all collectively decide upon a waitlist? I remember someone on here saying USF assigns a number to applicants on a waiting list. Just curious how the entire committee reaches conclusions for hundreds of applicants within a limited amount of time.
Mike,
As long as you are on. Could you clarify how far in advance they call people for interviews? Also is this the way it was done before REL left or is this new? I'm asking because I somehow I remember that it used to be that people were called weekly for interviews where they'd be called the week before an interview but it seems to have changed this year.
If you can comment that would be great. Just asking to clarify for those who were wondering on here earlier.
I have no experience with the actual selection or notification of applicants of interviews, so I can't help you there. I wouldn't be surprised if things are done differently now since REL is no longer there and things are under new direction.
Read into that however you want. If USF is your top choice I wish you the best of luck. I personally just want to get out of Florida. USF is currently my second to last choice, last choice being UW-Madison because I was flat out rejected there. In any event, try to stay out of the University area for housing, I moved there and two months later my house was robbed.
As for USF being a good medical school. Watch out, as the budget there has been tweaked significantly. Reason being is that USF as a whole misplaced quite a lot of money. You can verify this by checking out recent articles of the USF newspaper, "the Oracle", one point in case is that they are only able to have 4 police officer's on duty at any one time (this is for one of the biggest colleges in the US). They can't keep more than that because they don't have the budget to take officer's away from working for the city of Tampa.
I personally thought it has been a long known fact taht Principle investigators from research projects do not count as science letters and don't know why you thought otherwise. The point of the science faculty letter is not to say you can do research well or talk about your character but to talk about your ability to grasp tough scientific intellectual concepts in a science course. The purpose of a character letter is to talk about your research capabilities so I'm with USF and other schools that feel that way. Now a days USF undergrad has a committee anyways so that shouldn't be a big deal if you just get the big committee letter.
You're very defensive about USF, so I hope you get in there. Apparently I came across as very negative, what I was trying to do was give some basic facts that aren't apparent for people off campus. Now, calling on the phone was something I did, and there were problems with that too. As for the budget: the main campus' budget decides the budget for the medical school as well. You should know that. Finally, like I pointed out, someone who has known me for three years will be better able to comment on my ability to grasp "tough scientific intellectual concepts" better than someone who may or may not have noticed me out of the three hundred students in any given class at USF that met a few times a week.
Anyway, USF is going to have some problems, being able to pay their faculty as much as they could get elsewhere, building improvements to their teaching labs etc.
Finally, to comment on the communications aspect. Maybe I have high standards, but I'm not impressed with them sitting on their hands when something lands on their desk that isn't perfect. Northwestern and Harvard each had problems with a letter of recommendation that was sent to them (it wasn't on USF letterhead) but they both emailed me immediately and let me know so I can fix the problem.
Also graduate students don't get pre-medical advissory committee letters.
... I just wish there were better ideas towards clinicals and where one would be in 3rd and 4th year rather then random lottery system of deciding where one goes.
Yeah, I agree that the way they implement thier clinical years is kind of inconvenient. However, when I interviewed there a while back they told me they'll be doing away with the lottery system and students can choose where they want to attend. I think the lottery thing was used more for the first few classes due to the fact that many were married and had families. However, I still think there are only a limited number of spots for each area. I could deal with the relocation issue, it's the away rotations that would get to me. Having to traipse across the state and fight for certain rotations just to be competitive enough for residency would be a hassle.

I wouldn't worry too much about making improvements to USF. Take a look at the MANY new buildings going up both at TGH and at the main campus itself. We also just got a brand new student computer lab, health sciences gym, and new lounge with large flat screen tv, fridge, and leather couches. USF also plans to be the main supporter of a new hospital in Wesley Chapel.

I wasn't aware of that. I figured if you were a
I think the major problem with why there is such bad communication this year has to do with the fact that REL left USF. When REL was the admissions director communication was very efficient. He was the kind of person who would once said he got the secondary to someone within 6 min. of their request, and he was the kind of person who'd be calling people every week for interview invites for the following week and calling on time for acceptance notification/waitlist notification. He was also the kind of person who was very frank and transparent for 99% of the time. There was one situation where someone got royally screwed over last year but not due to him, but rather due to people on the voting portion of the committee. I think when you change administrators things like this where there are massive problems always occur.
Does anyone know why REL left USF?
Does anyone know why REL left USF?
I'm sure he'll answer that at some point on here...my guess is he wanted to bring his skills to Orlando and do a just as good if not a better job at UCF's new med school...either that or UCF knew it would be a great idea to have him on board and Dr. German "made him an offer he couldn't refuse"🙂
Does anyone know why REL left USF?
Does anyone know if USF and UM are swamped with applications or something? I was complete at UF, USF, and UM around Sept. 25th, heard from UF within 2 weeks, but still have not heard from either USF or UM. Anyone know what's going on there?
Tuesday will probably inch by.Has anybody heard anything from UF, rejections, acceptances, or invites. I hope to be invited, but from seeing the experiences of some friends of mine, I personally am not expecting to hear anything till next year.
