Florida Schools Application Thread (2009) Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
UM and UCF this year, maybe FIU. Can't speak for FSU of USF, but both are public and so I'd assume no.

Your assumption is wrong about USF. They have people who are from out of state. As REL has previously explained elsewhere, the ban on accepting out of state students in state schools was lifted some years ago before he left USF.

USF has since accepted quite a few out of staters albeit not in huge percentages. None the less if you want to apply, then go ahead and do so because they do have at least a few out of staters in each class. if you get in as an out of stater, after first year you can qualify for in state tuition.

For the last two years about 10-11% of the entering class were non-Florida residents, more than double any other public MD program in the state.

Hi everyone,

Do you all know if UCF COM is only looking for amazingly exceptional students, or do average god-fearing students like myself (30 MCAT, 3.5 gpa) have a shot at getting accepted?

I figured since they have free tuition, that they would prefer students with sublime stats and EC's. I hope this is not the case.

p.s. gujudoc i got ur pm. thx for the info!

I would never call 10-11% of OOS students "OOS friendly."

Well, in general, Florida isn't an OOS-friendly state...UF got something like 4,000+ OOS applications alone -- to matriculate a whopping total of 3 people. Great for in-staters, not so great for out-of-staters.

Frankly, I'm just loving this state right now 😀.

OK -- now I have a question about UMiami: Do you think they discriminate against applicants who don't accept interviews at the Boca Raton campus? The person I talked with on the phone in admissions sounded slightly shocked that I wouldn't be taking my Boca interview, but there's absolutely no way I'm reasonably going to handle an 8th interview in the next six weeks, especially if I can only schedule it on a Thursday. Hope I didn't just shoot myself in the foot, though...😳

They are obviously looking for something special, because this entering class will pretty much decide their accreditation. Do you have what they're looking for? Possibly. No way of knowing unless you actually apply though. I believe their early decision numbers were around 33/3.8, so that should give you an idea of the kind of applicants they expect to attract.

Don't think you will be discriminated at all. After the interview scheduling, the admissions are completely separate entities.

However, you can usually schedule your Boca and UM interviews on consecutive days, so why not go ahead and schedule it?

Thanks thoffen. 🙂 I really appreciate the help/advice.

Yeah, I just couldn't schedule it. I thought about it long and hard and I just couldn't give up a precious Thursday (I would have to miss 3 classes and volunteering at the hospital). I've managed to work it out so that Monday and Friday interviews only conflict with one class.

Gay👎. Thanks dude.

i am sorry but i have to call you out on this. the whole "gay👎. thanks dude." in response to someone, is really not appropriate. if you want to be a doc you should learn not to call or refer to someone as "gay" as a form of dismissal.

you can choose to be upset that i said something... but in the long run just helping you out.

you never know who you might offend.

And if you want to be a doctor you should really learn to read. I responded with "gay" for my feelings on there not being a UF status page. I then said thank you to the individual who gave me the information by sayings "thanks dude". In no way did I call him gay. I appreciated the information he gave me so I thanked him.

Ok i got an email saying my app was complete, and I would hear back within the next 10 business days from UCF....this email was sent the first week of August....errr wtf?

The issue was not that you were calling the guy gay. The issue was that you were using 'gay' as a term to show your disappointment in something which implies there is something wrong with being gay. Which is terribly insensitive to those that are homosexual.

I was showing that I was happy, look the word up.

Yeah i got the same thing, but only a couple weeks ago. Haven't heard a peep.

REL answered that question in this thread (1st page). Read the e-mail carefully. UCF says that they will send out rejections ONLY after the 10 business days. You're still in the running 🙂

Only if it was bad news. No news is good news is the message. That means they haven't made a final decision. That's what it said above somewhere.

it means u still have a chance of getting an interview possibly at some point in the app cycle.

PS if you ever have specific questions that u want to know regarding UCF COM, remember the director of admissions is a poster on here and I'd PM him or ask him in a thread directly. username = REL.

Just sharing for ur sake. 🙂.

Regardless, u shouldn't use the words gay to describe something as dumb on here because there are gay posters on here. I know at least one past florida applicant, now a med student who fits this bill. it is offensive to people like himself. Please try to remember that just because we have user names to hide behind doesn't mean that we shouldn't remember a degree of professionalism and if u use certain words or slangs with friends its one thing but there are adcom members and other people who post on here including the actual AAMC representatives in the AMCAS and MCAT threads. So it is wise not to use words that are as offensive as such.

gujuDoc, are you an MS-I in Florida? I was going to ask you how you liked the school you ended up choosing (assuming my theory is correct 😀).

haha no I'm applying now like u. If I had my choice it would be either UCF or USF with some luck this year though. We'll see what happens.

I did, however, do a masters at the medical school here at USF this past year in Molecular Medicine. We used a lot of the same slides as I saw in some of the many ppts used by my MS I and MS II friends. So the material was similar and we had access to all the facilities and study areas of USF health and things like that so I know a lot about those kinda things and what part of their faculty in the basic sci is like.

ah I see...well, happy med school application-ing, then 😀. Here's to hoping for good news. 👍

One more thing when I am a medical student u will see the status change on the little blue link under the username which says whether u are a medical student, attending, resident, premed, etc.

LOL!! Also, as far as choosing goes, those of my friends and several acquaintances who have been in this position often chose based on several factors i.e. familiarity, support system, general feel about the school, financial reasons, what kind of area they wanted to live, etc.

A lot at USF chose USF because of its laid back nature, familiarity and better support systems. At least that is true of those I talked to who I know out there. Same to be said about those of my fam. friends at Miami and elsewhere. It was really where they felt most at home that people ended up choosing.

^[I was just asking because I thought I saw you around last cycle and because you seem pretty knowledgeable about lots of parts of the application procedure...]

ok...if I don't respond immediately, it's because I have class in 4 minutes and we won't get out until 7:30 or so. Anyway, thanks for your generally informative posts 🙂.

Alright dude, I apologize for my terrible language. Friends now?

If everyone at my med-school is this uptight it's going to be a fun four years.

OK -- now I have a question about UMiami[/B]: Do you think they discriminate against applicants who don't accept interviews at the Boca Raton campus?

No. Both schools have independent admission committees. What you do with the boca campus is irrelevant to the Miami campus.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone know what the accepted/rejected percentages are for people who interview at Florida schools? And if you're waitlisted what are the chances of getting off the waitlist? This is my neurotic pre-med mind kicking in again...
lol

I was wondering if the big FL schools have started actively interviewing people? I read that FIU have been interviewing for awhile now but havent heard anything from the big schools.

UF and UMiami have...also UCF 😀.

Also, FSU and FIU have started interviewing based on SDN but I didn't apply to either of those...

Wonder if USF has started yet 😕.

On the interview thread, someone got an interview from USF today, and they're OOS, which I thought was strange

^ That IS curious. And in the interview thread s/he wrote the "University of Southern Florida"...correct me if I'm wrong but isn't it the "University of South Florida" (?)

Or does this explain why USF has not yet expressed an interest in interviewing me? 😉 I might end up waiting a while if I got the school name wrong...

Got my invite today from USF, In-state

Pianola- UCF sent you an invite today?

😀😀😀 Yep, REL called yesterday!! I was pretty excited. Needless to say. I was pretty excited all right.

sweet- yea I called them today to try and see my status to combine interviews- flying down so many times gets $$$$0 The nice lady on the phone told me someone would call me

Yeah, I understand; it's getting expensive to fly OOS so many times from where *I* am.

When were you who have received interview invites complete to the FL schools?

When were you who have received interview invites complete to the FL schools?

Before August -- UCF, USF, and UMiami. I wasn't complete at UF until the end of August, though (mix-up with the paperwork).

I just turned in my secondaries for FSU, UM, and FIU last week. I will probably turn in my secondaries for UCF, UF, and USF at the end of this week. Do you guys think I'm too late?

Do you guys think I'm too late?

I'm no expert on the matter but I would *think* you're fine. It might be a while before you hear from schools but I highly doubt that you're "too late".

:luck::luck::luck: Good luck!

Haha..from someone who grew up in Tampa, it's definitely South Florida

And to answer other questions, I was complete on august 20 at UF and got an invite monday.

since Uf, UCF, and USF all seem to have just started giving out invites this week, I definitely don't think it's too late at all, especially if you're instate.

I am in the same boat, i completed FSU secondary 2 weeks ago (my only real chance of getting in MD school considering my low mcat😀). I still have to submit USF, UCF and FIU, long shots due to the numbers of people applying and the # of available seats but i have to try. The essays are done but i have to do minor adjustments and paperwork, by next week it should be done for me. So you arent alone!!!

"University of Southern Florida", lol, that person better miss-type or USF is selecting people with no clue about the school. Sad thing is that USF will probably pass on me, who slaved away at USF for the past 4 years as an undegrad and another year as a post-bac trying to get in there

Got my USF interview offer yesterday! Woooo! Can't wait to head to Tampa!
