Florida Schools Application Thread (2009) Part 3

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Also, thought I may share something funny that I came across on the FAQ's at UM's website....

"They told me at the University of Florida that I would have to learn Spanish to go to medical school in Miami. Is that true?

Nuestros Buenos amigos en la Universidad de Florida no saben de lo que hablan."

hmmmmm... no se?

Uggh SDN is so slow for some reason today. But that said, yeah I see what you are saying. In that respect I love Chicago and have heard awesome things about NYC or LA or parts of NJ etc.

This is precisely why my bro prefers Ft. Lauderdale to deeper Miami. I suppose there is always the opportunity to do residency in one of the major cities.

And for that matter, I think even Orlando is a bit better in this respect though no way is it like NYC or Chicago where you have mini India, China town, mini Italy, etc.

I would love to visit NYC some day just for all awesome restaurants. Sadly, I've been more places out of this country then in it.
Don't tell me you go to Dubai to buy gold... 🙂 Apparently it's quite popular.

Yeah, some of our interviewees mentioned that.... Maybe whoever is running admissions finally got people under control. I pride myself on interview day to not mention names of other schools and if I do, then I talk about them in a positive light. It's the applicant's choice where they want to go. Best fit.

OK, I'll say this one last time. I DIDN'T go to UF as an undergrad. So the point is entirely moot. Yes, I know McGill is well ranked and yes I've visited and I know it's a good school. I never questioned that. Believe me, the school I went to as an undergrad would be entirely competitive with your school (only I'm not posting it because it makes me very easily identifiable). What's your point, anyway? Neither Miami or UF is on that link. And neither of us went either place as undergrads, so who cares?

Haha, I thought you were saying UM's undergrad program was ranked 20th in the world .

Oh the irony. UMiami didn't come up at ALL on my UF interview day.

UMiami spent a very long time attempting to characterize UF for me, though. AND apparently what UF thinks of UMiami.

Ok, for one...this isn't really about this thread or you. It's an in general thing. I have a big chip on my shoulder at times since tons of people make fun of me/my school/my country.

And you're right Miami and UF aren't on that link, which is why I'm saying that when it comes to all that stuff about people thinking so highly of their schools, it's really within a bubble and not always within full knowledge. It's within a certain context that people think highly of their schools. I didn't say I liked my undergrad or that I chose to go there. I'm just saying I went there.

Did I talk a lot about UF? Cuz I know nothing about UF and I don't remember saying anything except I know they have boards prep which is cool, but we don't. And I probably didn't bring that up, someone else did.

So do you want to go back to Canada some day or stay in the USA?? Also, do you think you'd go to another big city i.e. in the North for residency? Or is that too far away to think about?
Northeast is the plan, so I can be abused and told I'm useless more than usual in my residency. Also, I need to leave before I never get out of Florida and I want to be close to my family. Another thing - I'm saying in the US - my debt is one of the reasons although not the main one.

And I probably didn't bring that up, someone else did.

I agree, it wasn't you who said anything about UF. I think you did an excellent job facilitating the lunch and I enjoyed it. I appreciate your efforts to help our interviewing class get a sense of Miami.

However, the person who spoke to us about UMiami and introduced us to the school (filling in for the dean of admissions) was not quite so judicious in his choice of words re: UF.

While I think everyone in admissions means well, at every school you will have people who "breathe/sleep/eat" their school. With such an emotional investment comes a certain loyalty and subjectivity.

I'm sorry if you were offended by any of this and it is always my attempt to keep things under control. This is why the conversation about gung-ho school spirit loving students started, because it's behaviour like that often fueling inappropriate comments or defensiveness about a school. It's funny, all the things I value about a school are academic related, and some other things that people value about schools are student life. I guess that's because of how I was brought up, where I was told I was going to school and for whatever reasons.

I am from a different world, but not with intentions to insult anyone here. If anything, I think I make great attempts to understand what it is that american students go through when picking a college or writing an application. Until I moved here I never understood the point of blowing so much money on education, but I now understand.

Who filled in for the dean of admissions out of curiosity?

I think this conversation is probably taking an inappropriate turn and is now just continuing for gossips sake. I think we can end it. It's not really important and I actually don't think anyone "filled in for the dean of admissions". That is a misconception if I recall.

Until I moved here I never understood the point of blowing so much money on education, but I now understand.

Yeah, in the US one really doesn't have much of a choice (by and large). It's just something that we live with over here.

I certainly understand school spirit and that some people have it. I'm almost immune to the phenomenon, I'd say. I take your point.

Who filled in for the dean of admissions out of curiosity?

A pathologist...? He was a nice guy in general. He was very helpful in explaining UM.

P.S. The point of my posts was never to knock UMiami. Just that UF may not deserve as negative a reputation as it seems to have, apparently.

UF doesn't deserve to be knocked. Neither does any other school, but they do. It's kind of funny to hear the **** that people say.

Interview at FSU coming up... does anyone have any good advice as of where to stay in Tallahassee??

Does FSU give you the option to stay with students? Because if so, I would almost universally choose that option. Helps to give you a better feel for the school.

:luck::luck::luck: Kaya.

🙂 great idea! Thanks pianola!

Who cares where you went to undergrad?? No one gives a hoot.

And do not laugh at UM undergrad. I will say quite certainly that if you assembled all the Ivy Leaguers in our class and put them up against the best of us Hurricanes the result would be unlike what you would expect.

Anyways this conversation is amusing; yes we poke fun at UF as students, but that is because many of our student body went there for undergrad. I have not heard anything mean-spirited.

Now on a more positive note, who heres se habla espanol?

No. Even Opa's has better food then them, and they are overpriced and not that good. 😉

I was only joking, that place is as Greek as I am Jewish.

That place on Coral Way is pretty good, and I like the Daily Bread on US1 and 22nd I think?

I AGREE. That's why I posted what I did. No one cares where anyone went to undergrad. That was actually the point of my post.

I'm not laughing at UM undergrad. Nor do I think it's appropriate to smirk at UF undergrad.

all i gotta say is tim tebow is a beast

Yuuuuuuuuuuummmmm daily bread... u are making me hungry! 🙂 soooo gooooood

Are you talking about the Daily - where they have sandwiches?? I LOVE it there...such good sandwiches. If not, you should try it. It's not greek though - that I know of...

I will try that great place on Coral Way. 🙂 ANd by the way, someone at school seriously does love the University bar and grill and was appalled when I was like um, no. So I dunno...

all i gotta say is tim tebow is a beast

I'm guessing that Tim Ballnutsface is a football player, so:

1) seriously??

2) No, wait...like seriously?

3) Really?

4) Whenever confronted with difficulties in choosing where to go to medical school...always choose the school whose football team you like better, because it will definitely be really important for your future life, profession and career.

I'm not laughing at any undergrad, I'm just crying that I had to go through it. Ha. 🙂

Ok, so university bar and grill is not toooooo bad.... esp since they have cheap pitchers. The hummus is ok, but not great, but much better tahn bad once u have a cheap pitcher 🙂. My bf is in the biochem phd program, and we go there lots on fridays! You should def go, it is not as creepy as it was 3 years ago 😀

Glad we agree on something.

(except that laughing at Gators is fun :meanie:)

And yes, I was referring to the Daily Bread.

Aw, poor Fiko. He didn't realize he walked straight into an anti-football war zone.

But you're right, Fiko -- I ran into Tebow on campus the other day (he's in the same college as I am). He is, in fact, a massive human being.

Are you trying to get me to go to a bar, where we meet in real life and I'm like "um....so are you Kaya12" and then it's all awkward? No way!!

JK...we sometimes go after exams 🙂

Just found out who Tim Tebow is? Apparently I'm pathetically uninformed.

hahaha i love you 🙂

haha but as much as I love you Zeke, I quite like pianola too, so when we do share a pitcher of stella we best not make fun of the gators (hahah even though none of us even went to these schools for undergrad... U as a canadian, me as a chicagoan and pianola... where are you from love???) OH anyways, now I can't stop thinking of daily bread... Thanks dwayne u are the ruin of my healthy eating habits! At least in a contest of schools, UM probably has the coolest gym.... hmm

You heard the woman -- no making fun of the Gators

I was in California as an undergrad, Kaya.

And I will definitely give UM points for the coolest gym. I will even give UM more points if I learn that I'll have enough time to USE said gym 😉

lol u just need to relax, ive always been a die hard Gator Fan and I love Tim Tebow. I unfortunately do not have an interview at UF so it doesnt even matter. How do u make such an assumption from a random statement like that

I've been on SDN for a few years now and you should see how many times the debate about why someone should go to what school quickly deteriorates into a squabble about the seminoles vs the mofos. I really am convinced that some people really do pick their medical school based on sport stuff. It's hilarious.

 You know the way I see it, American football is to Americans as Soccer is to the rest of the world or Cricket is to certain parts of the world. You will always have the die hardsports fans and the die hard we don't care about sports people like myself.

I think everyone just needs to relax and let it go.

I wish Zeke luck with year 2 of medical school that she is in the midst of and I wish the rest of you luck with your applications.

And I wish Dwayne Wade luck with whatever year medical school he is in now. 3rd year I'm guessing.
yeah Dwade is in 3rd year. About Football - a lot of people like football where I'm from 🙂

Since I'm not a football fan, I don't make fun of teams or people who are fans of teams, because it's MEANINGLESS to me. The same way that people shouldn't really make fun of where I'm from, since most of them know little about it.

An aside: another reason why you shouldn't make fun of Canadians..
This year in Miami there are no live lectures from Kaplan - no course for boards being offered. Yet in my city of birth and upbringing there are several live lecture courses for USMLE Step I from Kaplan and you can take the boards in my city. 😀 Kind of funny. That's why I'll be home this summer.

Oh and I'm frustrated lately, because during election time and all the time, people make fun of me for being from Canada.

I thought people got past the "make fun of Canada" phase when they were in high school or something.

Is it primarily conservative people or have you noticed, DrZeke?

You mean republicans? Yes, pretty much, although there is one guy that just loves to make fun of everyone. For some reason republicans love to flame Canada any chance they can get. I never realized it was mostly them, but then a democrat classmate pointed it out and I found he was right. It gets really really old.

Yeah, I'd say that's one of the differences between UMiami and UF -- UF is far, far more liberal (for better or for worse, depending on your political preference).

I'm sure there are Canadian-haters here that I don't know about since I'm not Canadian, but I would be surprised if you met many around Gainesville.

This is not to knock UMiami in any way. Just saying. The politics part is a recorded, demographic difference.

Yeah, from what I remember, Miami's split pretty evenly (liberal v. conservative) whereas Gainesville's skewed to the liberal side of things.

I was put on a post interview hold at UF, and an MS1 there told me that they often accept some people in December. Do you guys have any idea if this is true? I tried to look on threads from last year, but couldn't really find anything. I was just wondering if there's any chance I'll hear before March or April. Thanks!

The dean (I think it was the dean? Whoever it was, def a reliable source) mentioned that they do accept people on hold in December after our interviews at the briefing, but he said that they don't accept too many during that time, most April-June like guju said. Good luck, hopefully we'll both finally get off this hold!

Yes, absolutely they accept people later. I thought it was in January, though...

accepted into FIU and UM! super excited! wish it were last cycle but hey, i'll take it!
