Zeke, I completely agree with you... I am very much torn between the two campuses. But I can't help but wonder if any of that is a defense mechanism, trying to convince myself that I'd be just as happy at Boca...preparing myself for possible rejection or something. Don't get me wrong, Boca has a great program and I am very excited to hear that we would be able to spend 6 months at Jackson.
You seem to know a ton about the program so maybe you have answers to a few questions about the boca campus...
1) can we go on all of the international trips with the Miami students?
I know that the Boca students were able to go on the international trips with Miami students in the past and I don't see why this would change
🙂. The class size is still the same. If in a few years the class size does get bigger, I'm sure the Boca campus will be arranging their own trips.
2) I remember at Miami they talked about lots of research opportunities and even a research distinction at graduation... is that available for Boca students too?
The research opportunities at Boca are more limited than the main campus, however we are encouraged to participate in research nonetheless. We will definitely be allowed to partake in research projects at main campus, although the drive would be kind of yucky, so I have a feeling that if you wanted to do this it would be best left for summer or during 4th year as a research elective. I believe there will still be research distinction for the students at Boca campus
🙂 I do have to be honest, though and say that the fewer opportunities at Boca campus is a bit of a drawback IMHO.
3)can we participate in research projects going on at the main campus?
As mentioned above, yes .
4)can we join any clubs/organizations on the miami campus?
I believe that you can, but again the drive would be a pain in the butt. I'm going to say that we will probably create our own clubs and interest groups, altho we may not be many at first. In terms of intramurals, I'm sure that we could do stuff with FAU students. If you are talking about specialty interest groups, I'm not sure about these, but I believe that with a faculty advisor and clinical advisor, every specialty will be at your fingertips. Shadowing and working with specialists will be possible, because there are so few of us and we will get a lot of attention. In terms of interest groups, with the program becoming more popular, there will be 64 students in future classes and we will probably be able to create more interest groups once we have a class of 2012 and 2013.
I urge you to check out the new website they've designed for the program. It's fairly informative. In terms of clinical education, I'm still waiting on the email from Dr. Wragg.

In terms of what you said regarding the convincing ourselves of how good it will be for fear of rejection... I've thought of this too, but I'm starting to think that's not it. I think that initially, many of us just wrote off the regional campus, because of what we "thought" it was. Now that we are accepted and waitlisted at main campus, we finally have to look into what the regional campus is all about and to some of our surprise...holy cow, it's actually pretty awesome. Suddenly, the decision is becoming difficult. For myself, I'm a bit concerned that I will become a student and no longer have a life if I go to Boca, but at the same time, I feel like I would be an awesome doctor. I also have a feeling that I'm just saying I would have no life, because I know at Boca, I'll go to class. LOL
