Do you think it was something in your essays or perhaps your LORs that could have set the committees off?? I agree with Dr. Zeke. Talk with adcom directors who've seen your application if you don't get in. Do what they say to do to improve and then reapply and update them with anything new even after you've sent in amcas and secondaries. That's how you get in.

One doctor friend of mine who used to be on an adcom said that mentioning my 9 year relationship and buying a home with my partner might upset conservative adcom members, which he said comprises many committees. I had my personal statement reviewed by my pre-med advisor who also was an adcom for a CA medical school a few years ago.

Dr lopez!

(go knights!)

Zeke, I completely agree with you... I am very much torn between the two campuses. But I can't help but wonder if any of that is a defense mechanism, trying to convince myself that I'd be just as happy at Boca...preparing myself for possible rejection or something. Don't get me wrong, Boca has a great program and I am very excited to hear that we would be able to spend 6 months at Jackson.

You seem to know a ton about the program so maybe you have answers to a few questions about the boca campus...
1) can we go on all of the international trips with the Miami students?
2) I remember at Miami they talked about lots of research opportunities and even a research distinction at graduation... is that available for Boca students too?
3)can we participate in research projects going on at the main campus?
4)can we join any clubs/organizations on the miami campus?

thanks for your help

1) can we go on all of the international trips with the Miami students?

I know that the Boca students were able to go on the international trips with Miami students in the past and I don't see why this would change 🙂. The class size is still the same. If in a few years the class size does get bigger, I'm sure the Boca campus will be arranging their own trips.

2) I remember at Miami they talked about lots of research opportunities and even a research distinction at graduation... is that available for Boca students too?

The research opportunities at Boca are more limited than the main campus, however we are encouraged to participate in research nonetheless. We will definitely be allowed to partake in research projects at main campus, although the drive would be kind of yucky, so I have a feeling that if you wanted to do this it would be best left for summer or during 4th year as a research elective. I believe there will still be research distinction for the students at Boca campus 🙂 I do have to be honest, though and say that the fewer opportunities at Boca campus is a bit of a drawback IMHO.

3)can we participate in research projects going on at the main campus?
As mentioned above, yes .

4)can we join any clubs/organizations on the miami campus?

I believe that you can, but again the drive would be a pain in the butt. I'm going to say that we will probably create our own clubs and interest groups, altho we may not be many at first. In terms of intramurals, I'm sure that we could do stuff with FAU students. If you are talking about specialty interest groups, I'm not sure about these, but I believe that with a faculty advisor and clinical advisor, every specialty will be at your fingertips. Shadowing and working with specialists will be possible, because there are so few of us and we will get a lot of attention. In terms of interest groups, with the program becoming more popular, there will be 64 students in future classes and we will probably be able to create more interest groups once we have a class of 2012 and 2013.

I urge you to check out the new website they've designed for the program. It's fairly informative. In terms of clinical education, I'm still waiting on the email from Dr. Wragg.

http://med.fau.edu/biomedical/ummsm_rmc/undergrad_meded.html

In terms of what you said regarding the convincing ourselves of how good it will be for fear of rejection... I've thought of this too, but I'm starting to think that's not it. I think that initially, many of us just wrote off the regional campus, because of what we "thought" it was. Now that we are accepted and waitlisted at main campus, we finally have to look into what the regional campus is all about and to some of our surprise...holy cow, it's actually pretty awesome. Suddenly, the decision is becoming difficult. For myself, I'm a bit concerned that I will become a student and no longer have a life if I go to Boca, but at the same time, I feel like I would be an awesome doctor. I also have a feeling that I'm just saying I would have no life, because I know at Boca, I'll go to class. LOL

now i could understand that maybe by chance you didnt get in anywhere, but i cannot understand if you dont even get an interview, i really think there is either something wrong with the PS or the LORs is there a way you can see your LORS?

Nope, can't see the LOR's since I agreed to give up my rights to view them. That's standard practice since adcoms won't take LORs seriously if you can read them.

You at least deserve an interview. It's all very strange...

You should talk to adcom directors at the med schools and see if that is what affected you. Perhaps it might be that or it might be something else.

I just got off the phone with the admissions office at Miami. They are not having a second look weekend.

Ouch...that sucks...I have a feeling they might lose a few students who are accepted at schools with extravagant second look weekends.

Maybe, but I can't really say that I blame them. If it means they have more scholarship money to dole out than I am all for it. Plus, they might just end up getting a bunch of people who weren't even really thinking about matriculating, but just wanted a nice warm weekend in Miami.

That's true. Do you know where you are going in the fall or are you still waiting for financial packages?

No, I'm probably going to let financial aid do my decision making for me. I'm a non-trad who is freaked out by the high price of medical school. I should probably stop reading SDN because it is so demoralizing to keep reading, "ZOMG Hillary is going to cut physician pay to $60k/year, what am I going to do about my $300k in loans?"

Realistically, based on my experiences as a Canadian semi-non-trad, I have to say that if anyone is to cut physician pay in order to make the system more public or socialized...I don't think school would be the same price. It's ridiculous and the doctor shortage would be SO crazy it would be unbelievable. I also don't think Dr. salaries would just plummet...it would have to be more gradual and that's IFF (hehe math nerd) she actually managed to do it.

Hahaha you know what I was just discussing something in class with a few friends of mine. The funny thing is that all these politicians talk about helping the underserved and saving the planet from pollution blah blah blah but then they act quite hypocritically. If those same people wanted to help, they could start by using their own money to help those less fortunate then them.

This was on page four so.......

BUMP!

So I'll confess-I'm a lurker! But I've been following this thread-and just wanted to say hang in there, lifetime. I only applied to USF and FSU (only two-yikes-I know) and am not feeling any interview love, so you're not alone in that boat.

And now I'm obsessively going over everything that could have gone wrong in my head. Realized today that it's slightly possible that my PS read less like a cute older sister playing doctor in one of my examples (my intro) and more like a sadistic sibling torturer. Am going to systematically hunt down all PS proofreaders for letting me be so stupid.

But good luck to all, and congrats to those with the coveted letters.

Aww, I know what you mean. Everytime I get a rejection, I wonder what did it. I already know what's wrong with my app based on conversations that I've had with admissions people, so I don't really have to use my imagination much.

Just remind yourself that it only takes one acceptance to be a doctor. 😀

Talk to REL about USF and talk to whoever is in charge at FSU. I'd imagine they'd also be friendly.

Ugh, I just had a horrible gross anatomy practical that's worth 50% of our grade. I knew the material cold, but we only get 4 hours on the actual cadaver each week, and that's dissection time, not study time. Now that I know I'm going to have to reapply next year, I wonder what a "B" would say to an adcom trying to forgive a 3.3 gpa. 🙁

I have one B in my masters - got in neuro. Missed the 90 by several fractions of 1%. LOL, I just let it go and said screw it.... I mean honestly, that's SO irritating!!!!! 🙂

Anyways, anatomy blows sometimes and dissection can often be useless - it's very dependent on your team and the integrity of certain structures in your cadaver. People are like..."No, it's amazing just like surgery". Look, I actually liked sawing a human head in half with a HAND-SAW last year, but that doesn't mean it's actually helpful for the test or for learning anything about anatomy 🙂 Buy that color atlas of anatomy...Rohen's or something? Past that point, class becomes less and less useful. It's the best book ever, because netter's is too clean.

Im goin to the Medical conference this weekend at UF. Anyone know who usuallygoes to represent USF, FSU, and Miami?
Also, did anyone go to the one at USF last week.... How was it?

for some reason i feel like you got in somewhere, didnt you get in somewhere or am i mistaken:idea:

We (at FSU) hosted a similar event with all the MD schools (both DO schools cancelled) from Florida back in October. Dr. Hinkley came from UM (and brought a student), Dr. Eveland from FSU, and Mr. Larkin and Mr. Fayson from USF (with a student). Also, Ms. Shepard (spelling?) came from UF, and Dr. Gessner was supposed to come as well but had to cancel.

Just for anyone who may be applying in the following year or who may end up having to reapply, March 24th is an informational session at FSU COM. Just thought I'd let you know. They are going to allow us to tour the med school and have a question and answer session and all of that sort of stuff. I got an email from my advisor about it.

USF will be represented by myself and 4 students (2 Med II, 2 Med IV), Dr Eveland (not sure about students) from FSU, Dr Hinkley (and probably 2 students) from UMMSOM.

Bump bump bumpity bump. That's all folks!!! 😀

I'm hungry.

On that note, has anyone seen Hannibal Rising yet?

Just as an FYI. I am currently a student at Boca campus, first year. There are definetly pros and cons abot each UM campus, but I ended up switching to Boca after I attended their weeked for accepted students because I loved it so much (I already had a deposit on an apartment in Miami and everything!)

But just to answer some questions...

1) Yes, FAU students can go on all the International Programs. Many students have gone to Haiti and Nicaragua and there are a group of us doing to the Dominican Republic for Spring Break. Sometimes it is hard to get everything coordinated with the Miami campus, but once you make the initial contact and let them know you are interested it is not a problem.

2) There are research opportunities here at FAU, granted they are not nearly as varied as those in Miami, but I do know a student who is working on a research project and is going to get the Research Distinction upon graduation.

4) You can be a part of any club/organization that is at the Miami campus. Usually what happens is one person from FAU will act as liasion between the two campuses and they will pipe in their meetings if you would like. FAU has started to form a lot of their own groups based on the students interests and I am sure as more students come more groups will get formed that are completely separate from the Miami organizations. Curently there is a Pre-Med mentoring group, Christian Medical Association, Surgery Interest Group, Pediatric Interest Group, Ob/Gyn Interest Group. An Optho Interest Group is currently in the works as well....

hope this helps!

The UF forum is going well. There are lots of out-of-state schools in attendance which allows us some unique access to learn about other schools as well as our own state schools. Time to take a look around the UF undergraduate campus a little bit, and maybe drive by the med school if I can find it.

Learn anything new?

BTW...did you apply late?

Got to hear from University of Chicago Pritzer, Temple, and from University of Florida who weren't at the USF forum so that was nice to hear an out of state perspective.

I applied in mid September, so not really late by kinda late.

I meant...when did you complete your secondaries? I thought I saw that you were doing them in November/December.

Hey, guys, sorry if this has been answered before, but how much is in the in-state tuition at Miami? I looked on their website, and I couldn't find it. I know a lot of you have had interviews at Miami, so I thought maybe you were given information about tuition on the interview day.

I just received an interview invite for Boca and Miami (at the same time; is that what they always do?), but I can't decide if I should even go because I have already been accepted at a school that is closer to my family, cheaper, and, though not better-ranked, probably a better fit for me. Still, I've never been to Miami, but I know the weather will be great, I'll be close to the beach, and I'll get a great education at a higher ranked school. But, I mean, at this point, isn't it pretty likely that I am interviewing for a waitlist spot? Being on a wait list all summer would also be added stress, and I'd rather just know where I'm going to go and get ready for it.

So, ahh, I can't decide, but tuition would probably be a deal breaker, and I am sure Miami is pretty expensive; I'd just like to know how expensive it really is. Any information would be really helpful. Thanks everyone!

I'm not sure that Miami interviews for the waitlist... 🙂 I think if you interview in March then it could be likely, but I heard they aren't full just yet.

Hey, guys, sorry if this has been answered before, but how much is in the in-state tuition at Miami?
Tuition and fees were around $30k last year. Cost of living is $22k according to usnews.

I encourage you to go interview at both the main and regional campus. There is nothing worse than a what-if! Now here are the exact numbers for tuition for c/o 2011. But I stress you should interview there first and dont base your decision on money alone. UM was not my original top choice but became so after interviewing there. Good luck!

Tuition and fees: 30,048
Living: 23,810
Total, 53,858.00

i agree go interview, afterall, for residency maybe you'll end up in miami, but i still thinkspots are open as is for the school of medicine itself too

I think I talked to your pre-med mentor on the phone - she is awesome!! I think wherever I end up, I'm going to try and be involved with younger students and pre-meds, because I want people to succeed and have an easier time with this applying BS than I had

Yeah...I'm thinking about buying that book for residency that everyone talks about. I'm tired of taking stabs in the dark at how to get where I want to go in life. 🙂
Better to start sooner than later.
