I don't have an MSAR, but I was wondering what the tuition differences are for Florida residents.

I know that UM is 30k, and UF is 20K. What about USF, FSU, LECOM?

Well, Still no news from FSU.....

I received another email. This time they dont even tell me a date; they just say that is going to be sometime this week.🙁 🙁 🙁
Hopefully, I will hear from them tomorrow.

I think I'm going to write one too - I know I talked about it a while ago, but since theres only two weeks left to hear from them I might as well hurry up. Are you going to snail mail or e-mail it to them?

I might do both.....what's their e-mail address anyways? I think since it's down to a few more days e-mailing them is crucial

Did they say until when they are interviewing? Are you interviewing for waitlists spots? How about FAU? Good luck.:luck:

I believe they are interviewing into middle of April. However they said spring break was the first week in April, so its probably more like all of March and about 1-2 weeks week in April

Whatever happened to OnMyWayRN???

I wonder if he decided between USF and FAU-Miami campus in Boca.

Oh and hello to the other Fl. peepz! 😀

Good luck. Why is FSU so disorganized i wonder!!

Out of curiousity something I've been meaning to ask you. If you got into FSU and not into the other Fl. schools, would you go to Temple or FSU?????

I would go to FSU
I really liked the school.
and also you can't beat the tuition difference
43k vs 18k
I take 18k any time
Also living in Tallahasse is way cheaper than Philly.

Trueeee!!!

I just recently visited FSU this past Tuesday. I called ahead to make sure it was okay and Ms./Mrs.? Calloway informed me that things are really crazy around there because this is match week. She even hesitated to give me a time to come by because of how crazy it was. When I got there everyone was in meetings or class...very busy day. Some 1st years took some time to talk to me and invited me to sit in on a class..that was nice. Hopefully after this week they will be back on track.

Good luck CubanDoc!! I hope you get in! :luck: :luck:

Thursday was match day and it was all very exciting. My lab is right next to where it was all going on at UM and there was nervous/excited energy just emanating from this tent where they held the ceremony!

So, I decided to browse around the UM website and found myself looking at past match lists and then I stumbled on USMLE scores. Apparently the national average was 219 in 2006, while UM's average was 217.... Wonder what happened there? Seems that in all previous years - based on this powerpoint presentation - that UM has consistently scored a few points above the national average. 🙂

I dunno, thought I'd share what I found.

Everyone at UM has historically spent more time on the beach that places like Mayo, so they score better on their USMLE 😀

When do UF final decisions come out? They said March sometime but did not mention when in March.

I know that UM is 30k, and UF is 20K. What about USF, FSU, LECOM?

In short:

FL Resident Tuition
==============
UM = ~$30,000
LECOM/NOVA = ~$25,000
USF/FSU/UF = ~$20,000

UF has interviews on March 30. So I think that at the committee meeting on the following Monday they will either accept or waitlist. They reject very few outright of those that they interview.

I got the email from FSU ( not the call 🙁 🙁 )
I'm officially on Hold.
I guess I just have to keep waiting.

Has anyone received an interview invite from UMiami (either campus) recently or know someone who has? If so, when was your/their application complete?

Sorry to hear that CubanDoc. Remember that many people that attend FSU come from the hold list! I'm right there with ya! 🙂 :luck: :luck:

But, I understand. Being in limbo is not fun, especially regarding your life's ambition.

I keep telling myself that. Main campus sounds more suitable to my needs, particularly that I want the research opportunities that I want and I would feel more comfortable living in a city AND I WANT TO ROTATE THROUGH JACKSON!!! 🙂. There are other things that impressed me, but those are some that are really weighing on me at the moment. In terms of the low USMLE scores last year, I tell myself that it's because it's a very individual thing. I've also noticed that Miami has a healthy mix of students - some who are very serious and others who have different things on the priority list. I wonder if anyone can confirm this for me, but I just figure USMLE score is a very individual thing...

How you eventually end up doing is definitely an individual thing, with a few caveats. Certain things your school does can certainly help you when it finally comes down to taking it. A lot of people don't realize that the USMLE Step 1 is an exam you spend 2 years preparing for (i.e. learning all the basic science stuff). The month before Step 1 is essentially a review of what you learned the first 2 years, and not really the chance to re-learn everything (which is quite impossible). While those people with the 40s on their MCAT are probably going to smoke it regardless, Schools that a) have classes that are geared towards teaching you how to critically appreciate the information and b) give block exams that try to simulate the real thing are really going to help you out regardless of where you stand. Getting into a US allopathic school is tough, yet there's a wide variety of USMLE Step averages at each school (based on the hearsay on SDN). There are solid students at every school. Some of how people end up doing has to be attributed to how the schools present and test the info during the first 2 years.

I have been interviewed and am on the wait list at FSU (I also go to FSU). I have talked to Jamie several times about when I would hear from them, yes or no. She said they can pull your application at any point and call you for the acceptance. I am wondering though if they are more likely to call after they stop interviewing than at any point before. Does anyone know when the last interview day is for FSU? This waiting has had my stomach in knots for two months.

REL,

How did USF fair in the match? Can you post the general statistics of number of people who matched and percent in each field even if you can't post the actual list due to privacy of individuals.

so how many of you guys are planning on going to USF's 2nd look? hopefully we'll be able to get a feel for what next years class will be like. 🙂

Also...are you going alone or bringing a guest? anyone know what the dress will be like? casual, business casual??

If you use the search function on the USF site (I searched "Match 2007 medicine") you can find the pdf file that lists the match from this year. I think it's the third or fourth link that pops up.

Here is USF's match list for 2007...

Here is a graph of the matches...

Also attached is an Excel spreadsheet (zip file) of all the same data so you can make your own, sort, etc...

I've been waitlisted at FSU, UF, AND Miami. I am so frustrated right now.

Just wanted to vent.

Awww...I think there is a high probability though that you will get into one of those. Write LOI's ASAP 🙂

The results of the Match and a video of the ceremony can be found here.

I see the results, but I can't find the 2007 results. Am I just an idiot, or has it just not been updated yet? Or both?

I only see the 2006 and later results.

No, you are not an idiot, they have yet to update it! Speaking of the match, I was looking up copies of Iserson's Getting into Medical Residency. Apparently, it's a great book and good to have early on. 😱

ZOMG, you are such a gunner. You haven't even started school yet, and you are already reading Iserson's.😉

LOL!! Shuddup ok, I know I sound like a gunner, but I'm freaking out! I don't want to end up being that ***** who uses the excuse "If I had known, then I would have...". And...LOL, I'm not reading it yet!! I was just looking into it. Right now I'm reading "Bloodletting and other miraculous Cures". It's very fun and it is set in cities from back home that are very familiar to me, so it's very interesting.

No, you're not a gunner 🙂 I wish I had known some of the things before I went through this process. i was flipping through it myself at the library the other day, but I got bored and decided to leave it till Christmas Break... From what I can tell, Matching is much more stressful than the admissions process, so whatever helps

I interviewed at USF yeasterday. Loved it. Did anyone else feel like they should add something to their file after they tell you "if you have anything to add, add it by this date". I wish I had something more to addd, but Ive been updating them this whole time.

BTW, who can come to the second look weekend? I just interviewed, and dont even have a decision yet. I want to show how much I want to go to USF, but would it even be worth it to go?

Sorry that seats taken and it's mine. I lost USF because I interviewed terribly. Then again I used the experience combined with Rel's help to get into Miami.

Thanks, I think I will leave it till Christmas break as well, but I will still purchase it in the near future. It's nice to know that other people think like I do. I read a bit of last year's florida application thread, and from what I would tell there are definitely who are on the same page as we are now. I also agree that I wish I had known more about this process. I am convinced if I had written a better application, I would have had success in getting interviews from more schools and maybe even some acceptances. Now that I have an acceptance, I don't care as much. All I know is that I don't want to be unprepared when the next application/interview phase comes around 😉

LOL, can't we share or is your butt too big?

so i was just wondering, who are these mysterious people that comprise the adcom... are they doctors or professors or just office people... i havent got a clue and was just wondering... any specific answers to florida schools would be better since this is the florida thread...

dr. zeke, you volunteering yet?? and becareful with the sharks at the medical campus for research, i had to learn that firsthand 🙄

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if you knew whether or not USF was still inviting students for interviews. Thanks so much!🙂

LOL, thanks for the heads up Ballerina doc. You'll have to share with me in a PM exactly what you mean by that statement 🙂

Yup, I volunteer on Wednesdays from 3-6...how about you?

Hey Guys,

I thought they finish interviewing at the end of this month, so I'm guessing that they may be done sending invites. REL if you are out there please come and share some more official info on the topic.

The adcom office or committee???

REL could probably expand but my understanding is that there are both voting and non voting members of the adcom and then there are some people in the admissions office that are staff.

The voting members I think consist of both PhD's and MDs. I don't know if 4th year students get to vote but I know 4th year students can participate in the adcom as interviewers.

I'm sure there are some MD/PhDs too. There might also be some MPHs at USF's committee. I know Mrs. Jackson of the Office of Academic Enrichment who has roles in the admissions office is an MPH.

Mr. Larkin is neither a PhD or MD but he's the admissions director so he's on the adcom too as a nonvoting member. Don't really know much beyond that but I think its mostly faculty who are on the voting part of the committee and the nonvoting part includes students and other people.

It definitely is not just random office people only.

REL please expand if you can.
