As promised, here is a comparison of the four schools' Match lists.
...
I feel bad for future FSU grads... not because of the match list, but because their sports future looks bleak

Any surgical (i.e. vascular, cardiothoracic, surg onc) or medical specialty (i.e. pulmonology, GI, heme/onc. cardiology) will, respectively, require a full gen surg or internal medicine before the specialty fellowship.
Why are neurosurgery residents chosen straight off medical school? Is it because that it is such a specialized field that you need all of seven years?

It's a totally different discipline.

You need to be trained in general surgery in order to perform specialized cardiothoracic, colorectal, transplant, oncologic, and many other types of surgery. General surgery is real surgery; it involves cutting people open and stuff.

Neurological surgery, much like ophthalmology and a number of other 'surgical' specialties, involves a different breed of surgical procedures and is confined to a narrow organ system. Being skilled in cutting people open and manipulating viscera isn't going to do you much good if your ultimate objective is to learn how to fiddle with lasers and suck things out of eyeballs.

Similarly, a cardiologist needs to have a solid grasp of pathophysiology and the medical management of a whole variety of illnesses involving a number of interconnected organ systems. A dermatologist, on the other hand, does not.

Hi,

I am from California where it is extremely competitive to get into state schools. I applied to U of Miami, interviewed in Feb 07, was placed on waitlist on 3/1/07/. Does anyone know what are my chances to get off the waitlist as an out of state students? Anything I can do to improve my chance?

So someone said earlier that Miami is done iviting for interviews today. Is this true? I hope not because they've held my app w/out rejecting me for a long time and I hope that I still have a chance.

Is it April 11th yet? 😀

Since USF's last interview day is the beginning of April 2nd (I believe) and the last day they'll be handing out non-waitlist acceptances is April 11th (1 week and 2 days after the last interview), won't April 11th be the earliest possible day to be accepted off the waitlist? Will waitlist movement begin on that date, or will it just occur randomly and ramp up towards the big May 15th day?

Yours in medical school waitlist limbo (aka hell),

LifetimeDoc

 I'm going to go crazy now... 🙂 😍 😱 :scared: 🙄 😀 🙁

i'm in the same boat, kdburton. still hoping for a last minute interview.

Hey... a few weeks ago I had called UM and they said they interview until March 30th. :-( I was waiting for that interview too...but no luck! They will be willing to answer that question if you just call and ask tho...you never know maybe they changed? 🙂 ...I hope so for all of us waiting!

On the otherhand... I was curious how FSU early orientation works with the rules of matriculation and not accepting other acceptances.... I have an interview March. 30th. Is going to the FSU early orientation a binding deal? ...and what happens if you absolutely can't make it? ...I actually really want go and meet people and see more of the school in an informal setting, but I don't know if I can yet.

Thanks!! Congrats and good luck to everyone!

Yeah, I was hoping for an interview at UM (I haven't been rejected...yet), but it's looking like that ain't gonna happen. 🙁 I was hoping to have more options in FL just in case USF or FSU end up not taking me off their waitlists.

The orientation is only binding if it's part of the start of the official school year/classes (i.e. the orientation that is right before the beginning of classes, like the Friday before classes start on Monday or something like that). The early orientation at FSU isn't binding.

Thanks! You too! 🙂 :luck: :luck:

Yeah but the thing is even if interviews end afterthat date there will be many people who are wanting to hang on to multiple acceptances until the last minute. It depends on when people start dropping their multiple acceptances and most won't do it until they absolutely have to make a decision.

See I've been getting mixed reviews on this subject. I've been told multiple times by different people at the UM admissions office that they "invite for interviews through the end of March." Is everyone sure that they've been hear that they interview through the end of March? I can't imagine they would still be telling me that my file is under review right now if they are also saying that they will only be interviewing through the end of the week...

I think they were asking who comprises an adcom not who is adcomm or adcom2.

I.e. who is on USF adcom? Not in terms of names of actual people. But on the voting and non voting committee what kind of people does it comprise of? Are the voting part of it all faculty and physicians or also some students? Who comprises the non voting portion? I think that was the question.

yep thats what I meant, i guess my communication skills are lacking... haha
but thats what I was trying to get at.

thanks all

kd, you may found out either way on wednesday when the ADCOMM meet. Hope you get an interview!

Well, tomorrow is a big day for me. I hear from USF and UM. I know REL will call b/w 9 and 12, but whe did most of you hear form UM?

Pray for me!!:scared:

Good luck pipedream

:luck: :luck: :luck: :luck:

Heard from UM via email at around 6pm. Good Luck!

I didn't get this answered before. Does USF have a second look? If so what are the details?

Anyone????

Good luck Pipe!!!

Hey everyone,

Just thought I would vent, because I'm having the worst week. I burned half my face at the beach on Sunday and my ear has started blistering - sleeping has been pretty painful. Yesterday at Yoga, I came out of a pose and hurt something in my cervical spine, because I had a creak in my neck all day and when I woke up this morning, my fingers are tingling. Thank heavens, I'm going back to somewhere where I can get physical therapy without a consult in a few weeks. In the meantime it's stretches and some help from the trainers at the gym. And last night I got dumped. This morning, I just didn't feel like getting out of bed. 🙁 I'm so pathetic...

yikes, that sounds like a handful, get some rest, have fun with friends this weekend, and no worries about the boyfriend, you'll find plenty of DOCTOR guys to chase after in medschool

Aww, sorry. 🙁 Hope today is better.

Anyone got some good news for me? I haven't checked this thread in about two weeks or so.

LOL thanks 🙂...you guys are kinda making me feel better. Unfortunately, I have to teach tonight for TPR and then I have to go to work tomorrow. I'd rather not, but what can you do.

It's better for you to get out and do stuff even if you don't feel like it. Staying home and feeling depressed has to seriously be the WORST thing you can do right after a break up. Really. Make some plans with your friends, go for a movie or dinner, whatever you like to do. Just don't stay home.

Are the hours as intense as General Surgery? It's a straight 7 years, right? Counting internship year?

i kept wondering what TPR is but now i just figured it out, and i didnt ask anyone im so happy!!!!! geez you have a busy life when does dr zeke get to be called dr vacation?

I'd imagine its a lot worse then gen. surg because its longer!!!

My understanding is that if you do an additional fellowship it is 7-9 or more years of training. Whereas something like cardiothoracic is 7 years total because its 5 gen surg and 2 cardiothoracic fellowship.

No kidding... After a breakup the best thing you can do is go out, get drunk, and wake up next to a random from the bar 😀

LOL, well I quit one of my jobs that was taking up 20 hours/week and thankfully that hell is over, so I work way less. Right as I have more time on my hands I get dumped. And to top it off we share friends...well of course, I made an appointment with a therapist today, because I figure someone has to listen to me talk 🙂.

Also, get this!!! On the way to the building where I am teaching tonight, a cop pulls me and 5 other people for turning out of the wrong lane - it's kinda confusing - and he doesn't end up giving me a citation, because I am from "out of town" and don't know my way around. Haha gotta love the non-Florida plates. Anyways, of course I started bawling before I knew that he wasn't going to give it to me, because I was like OMG this is the worst week ever. I don't even want to get out of bed tomorrow!!!!

BUT...I am feeling a bit better and I know life will go on and we are going to embark on the awesome journey of medical school!!! 🙂 Yay. *wow..it's amazing what a little bit of vitamin water and a york peppermint patty can do*

It makes sense that CT would be Gen Surg for five years and fellowship for two. But since Neurosurg is a total of seven, I assumed it might not all be like Gen Surg. I've heard that fellowship has better hours than residency and I'm wondering if that's the same for the tail end of Neuorsurg (after five years, for instance) or if it's all seven years of hellish hours and no time for family.

Before you all start speculating the about the reasons why neurosurgery is different from CT surg vs general surgery, at least get the stats right. Neuro surgery residency lasts 6 years, including a surgical internship. The average amount of time spent for all three specialties is greater than 70 hours a week. See Freida for more information.

I thought that depends on the program and that it could range from 7-9 if you include fellowships and other stuff.

Edit: Nevermind. You're right.
