Peace Out.

Just got the calll from REL at USF... Middle tier. He said it would be a 50/50 chance, but Im super bummed right now. Does anyone know of anyone who got off the waitlist in that position? 🙁

Best wishes!! Hopefully come June/July you'll get that call!

Good luck and hang in there. Waiting is tough.

Thanks.

I received the best wake up call of my life.

I had my interview with a 4th year medical student and a doctor. The MS4 called me today.

okay guys... I was talking to a friend who thinks I'm crazy for not waiting around for a "better" florida school to accept me. (For those who don't know I'm on the waitlist at UF and high-tier waitlist at USF). I just think its too much of a gamble to wait around, but am I really selling myself short? It's not like I don't like FSU..I actually love it, but how much should going to a statistically "better" progam count?

To all of those out there still waiting...Good luck!! 🙂

The only concern I have about FSU is if they focus too much on primary care fields (that is if you are interested in going into more specialized fields).

If you are on the high tier at usf you will be getting in in all likelyhood.

Personally, I would wait and leave FSU as a last option. I truly believe that the other FL schools really have a significantly better package as compared to FSU. And I know that you can be a great Dr by going to any med school and get a great residency yada yada but did you look at the match list for FSU? not too hot. Since FSU starts earlier than the rest, it wont hurt you to stay on the other waitlists. Also, when I interviewed OOS, the other med schools were really surprised when I said that FSU has a med school. Good Luck

There were some in my class who go in from that area of the waitlist. It really varies from year to year I would imagine based simply on how many people choose to go elsewhere who are above you on the list, but Rel has a pretty good idea of how the list generally moves. I definitely wouldn't give up hope at all. 50/50 sure beats 0% chance, so your odds aren't bad at all. Best of luck.

I would agree with this. High tier folks pretty much are going to be offered a spot based on the typical movement of the waitlist in the past. I was a high tier person myself and was offered a spot sometime in early May.

LOL, he is stealthfully sarcastic...it says so above his avatar. Seriously though, I believe that Deuist is drawing attention to the fact that people look at match lists and assume that it means they have better chances if they go to a certain Florida school. All in all, we're mostly around the same ranking, it's all just about what you want to see or where you want to be. Also, regardless of what a match list looks like, it doesn't have THAT much to do with the teaching. The match is very individual, because of your performance on certain rotations being very individual and your USMLE score being very individual and so on and so forth. Taking the USMLE score as an example; regardless of a school's teaching style, you may or may not be able to master the material. Even if you do, then you have to still tailor that knowledge and application to a standardized test known as the USMLE, so there are a lot of factors in how you will do on that test and whatever score you end up with will be one of SEVERAL factors affecting how you match. So really...do well at any of the Florida schools and you will most probably match where you want 😉

Very true. How well you do on Step 1 really is a reflection more of how well you study for it and how bright you are than how well your school prepares you for it. I really believe that if I went to any other medical school I probably would have done about the same. I feel like what I knew for Step 1 was mostly a reflection of how well I studied in the 4 weeks leading up to the exam. There is so much information that you forget over the course of 2 years. I don't feel like USF itself was so key to me doing well, but rather that I studied well for it. That being said, USF is a wonderful medical school and I have been trained well. I wouldn't pick any medical school based on their average Step 1 scores (unless they're really horrible, like below the national average). There are more important factors such as how do the students like the faculty and each other. Med school is already stressful enough in itself. Find a place where you'll be happiest and where you feel like you would fit in the best. Schools definitely have their own personality. Most likely finding a place where you're happy will be the key to doing well.

do you know of any people in your class that were in the middle tier?

Yes, there were several. I know someone who got in 1-2 weeks before school starting in August. It's sort of a crap shoot who gets in from that area and who doesn't. The high tier people are almost guaranteed a spot based on how many people from previous years choose to give up their seat. But it's that middle tier where it could go either way...

sorry, I just saw that you answered that question earlier. my bad😀

Don't worry guys, Miami is notorious for being late with its post-interview results. You will never hear back exactly on the day they tell you at interview. I got my acceptance in mid Dec. '05 after I was supposed to be notified in early Nov. Be a little patient and Im sure you'll get good results. Good luck to all future MS1s!

How well you do on Step 1 really is a reflection more of how well you study for it

Our dean told us that the research indicates that the people who do best on Step I are the people who study the hardest during the six-week period leading up to the exam. How you did during the first two years has little carryover to test day. I can't find any data to back up his statements. However, if you get on PubMed and do a search for "MCAT" or "USMLE," you'll come up with some surprising results that might be worth an hour of reading.

I have also been told that your class rank at the end of your 2nd year roughly can predict your score. That means that if you're #10 in your class you can probably expect to do fairly well, but if you're last in the class you should probably put a little more effort into your studying. Again, this is not exact, but something that I have generally found to hold merit.

good luck on that waitlist.

Congrats on your acceptance--- and good job in your decision to attend the academic and athletic powerhouse in the florida--- GO GATORS! I graduated from there in 2005, so let me know if you have any general ?s about the school.

I've always wondered about this dilemma. FSU has an early start and waitlist movement for other schools can go up to just before classes start in August.

Take that risk or attend FSU.

The good thing about USF waitlist is that it's ranked and Mr. Larkin is honest about the chances. However other schools may not give specific status about the waitlist position.

Good luck....hopefully you hear from the waitlisted schools soon and then you could make a decision accordingly.

Definitely not a bad dilemma at all.👍

Peace out!

I hate to be the argumentative one here, but I gotta stand up for my future school😉 I don't think you can look at FSU's match list the way you would a "top" school, since a lot of people there actually *want* to go into primary care (and several people that lie and say they want to just to get in, actually change their minds and want to do it too). Talking to people there on match day, they said that almost everyone got into one of their top three choices, which would be a much better measurement if we could get that data.

Long time, Floridians. D- I see you're on the deans cup water polo team. I hope you're going 2-a-days up there in prep.

Unfrozencaveman? Back from the dead! What are you doing online? You should be studying right now. Disconnect your computer from the Internet and get back to the books.

Water polo team? I don't know how I got on that list! I don't even remember signing up for it. I thought that I was only competing in swimming this year. I need to contact someone about that...

I went to FAU.
I graduated last December.

People are starting to talk very highly of FAU.

Someone told me that 10 people from FAU got into UM@FAU this year. That's pretty cool.

Yeah, I heard FAU has really gone up in quality in the past few years 🙂

When I went to the preprofessional office at the beginning of February. The lady that I spoke to told me that over 50% of the applicants had an acceptance.
Considering the National Statistics I think those are very good numbers.
😀 😀

How and why do you know EVERYTHING 🙂?
Heh. Someone has to be our resident FL thread smart-a**. We're lucky to have one who's as skillful and stealthy as deuist. 😉

Zeke, hope this week has been better for you.

bball, if you like FSU best, then go there. Let your friends who like other schools better go to other schools. You will not get a "better" or "worse" quality of education at FSU versus the other FL schools just because USNWR says that FSU is not a research powerhouse. What matters most to your future is what YOU bring to the table. If you work hard, you will do well at any of the FL schools. On the other hand, if you're sure that you want to do research, that might be a good reason to reconsider. I didn't apply to FSU last year because I'm definitely going into research. Probably I could have found a way to do research even at FSU if I had been willing to work at it, but it's just easier at the other FL schools. Even USF is becoming more research-focused with their new dean, and I swear, if Miami gets one more multi-million dollar grant....it seems like they're always in the news for that lately. 👍

All right, FL party people, it's about that time again. We've nearly hit 1000 posts. Who wants to make Part III so that I can close this one?

unfrozen-Oh.My.God. You're alive! How is the new bachelorette pad???
