I have my UF interview on friday...apparently gainesville is alright? I assume it's still on...I tried calling the office today and couldnt get ahold of them though to check. since MIA is back in service hopefully my flight will be able to leave on thurs.

Gainesville is fine. We had some light rain and that was it. My guess is your interview is still on. Try emailing Robyn, she is usually quick to respond.

PS - It is unusually cold here the past two days. You may want to bring a coat for the mornings and nights.

Thanks for the advice, yeah it's been chilly in Miami even! I think low 60s outside, which for us is not usual in october...
They called me today and everything is set for friday, so gainesville here i come.

I got a question? When should I update UF? I am on waitlist post-interview. I dont want to just send stuff when it happens because who knows when things will be happening. My question: is there a specific time when they look over the applications again? Like right before december break? Any suggestions?

I think I remember them saying to update them after Fall grades are out....and send a transcript too. This makes sense b/c most of the Florida schools get out mid-december and I think UF accpts a new bunch of the "hold" list at the end of december.

The UM status page is back up...Maybe that means the school has power and things are starting to turn back to normal.

In regards to UF, I would think if you had something big, like a publication, you should let them know ASAP. If you have a list of less big news, I would compile the list in a letter format and mail it Mid to late Nov. But that is just my opinion. To get a more official one, you could email Robyn and see what she thinks.

With any school, I think as long as you do not send something in ever week or every two weeks, you should be fine. Hope this helps. 😳

Good luck! I am in the same boat...

Yea Miami is a very dark place right now... there wasn't that much flooding... but it was a headache and a half.

A tree fell on my car lol... it was the funniest thing... thank God for F.E.M.A.

Our mail service should think about switching to kayaks...

I'm one of the 20% that has power... internet... cable... and A/C - so I'm good.

My condolences to those who are affected by the hurricane..

I am wondering if any of you out of state applicants have received an interview invite from U of M..

I am on the "ranked list" status according to their website. I'm still hopeful

Firebird, don't worry, you will get an interview soon enough. If you made it to the ranked list at this point in the cycle, you will.

Firebird-

I called last week and Miami said they started giving OOS invites, but the guy on the phone seemed kind of unsure. I'll keep you posted if I hear anything else.

I called FSU and they said I was accepted. I would call them up if you havent heard anything..

Now does this apply to only oos applicants or in-state too? I've been sitting on this ranked list for what seems like forever! Why do I get the feeling that I may be at the bottom of this blasted list?! 🙁

Yeah I'm curious as to how this ranked list has worked in previous years..

And I have no search engine on here... can someone help out?

Grats!! 👍

Hey Firebird,

Well your application is reviewed by three different committee members, they each assign a numerical value to your application, if you pass a certain threshold, they place you on a "ranked list." This list is ranked on the basis of the number....

Every monday/friday, they pool the next 15 or so names from thatlist in order...

Thats about it.

I wouldn't worry, I am sure youwill get an interview soon enough.

Haha no problem firebird. Now for the next explanation, we will integrate from zero to X under the ranked list  ....

Don't worry, if you're on that list this early in the game, you will most definitely get an interview.

nice to know, thanks for the explanation!

If you are curious about how they arrive at the numerical value, Dr. Hinkley explained it to us at a premed forum or two:

The value is given out of 110 pts as follows:

50pts = MCAT + GPA
20 pts = direct clinical contact.
15 pts = other extracurriculars (i.e. research, volunteering, leadership, etc. etc.)
15 pts = letters of recommendation
10 pts = any hardships you might have had to face being taken into account, and how you overcame them.

Wow I didn't know that lol... awesome, good to know Gujudoc !

Wow, ok I have a few questions. So basically is this saying that your MCAT is worth like a gazillion times more than your GPA? Or is the 50 points more arbitrary and they assign you a number based on both values? So, I guess my question is...MCAT + GPA gives you a max. of 49 (45 + 4.0). Do you use this number, or is it something like if you do decently well in both or do amazingly well in one they just assign you some arbitrary number?

Sorry if my questions are a bit confusing! I'm just trying to clarify things for my boyfriend, who's out-of-state and has a ridiculous MCAT but a GPA that concerns him a little (although it's not bad by any stretch of the imagination). Thanks, Guju...you always give the best info 🙂

I don't know exactly how MCAT and GPA factor against one another. But I know that the two together are weighed as 50 pts, while all your different ECs, LORs, and hardships count for 10 pts more then the total value of the MCAT and GPA portion of the equation. This means that you can get 60 pts alone from those other things, meaning that even if you have slightly lower numbers like a 3.5 and a 27 vs. someone with a 4.0 and 35, you still have a shot if you show excellence in other areas.

Nope. I keep calling and I keep getting the answering machine.

EDIT: I finally got in touch with someone. They said that I'm "still under consideration", whatever that means 👎

Thanks for the post! Quick question: Is this for deciding who gets an interview or for deciding who gets an acceptance?

This is the 110 pt system they use to rank you.

Recall the poster that mentioned that your application is given to 3 people to rank you.

This is how those 3 people rank you.

So I would assume that determines whether you get an interview. Then the interview factors in with overall application in deciding where to put you on the acceptance list.

I still like SailCrazy's throw-the-files-down-the-stairwell-and-see-which-ones-travel-the-farthest method for deciding who gets an interview. If we ever get the search function back, I'll link that post for y'all.

I was considering sending an update letter to Miami that includes some shadowing I did over the summer and a conference I'm presenting at next week. How do you think they handle things like that? Will it just be added to my file or will I have to be re-evaluated all over again?

I'm not sure, but I would get Arsenic810 to see if he could answer this, since he is acting as an official liason between Umiami and SDN.

I would pm him and see if he can find out or answer such questions??

I remember that post quite distinctively. That was over the summer.

I think it will just be added to the file....if you have interviewed and a decision already been made, then they will re-evaluate your file at some point. If you have an interview coming up, I assume it will added to your file prior to them voting....If you're on the ranked list, then they may have to re-evaluate your file....

THat is just my two - cents

I think I'm going to write them a letter for you. Come on! Give this guy an interview!!

I know, come on 😀

I promise you'll like me Miami!

In the fastest turn around *ever*, I interviewed at UF on Friday, and got in today.

daaaaaaamn, that is fast! the fastest turnaround I've experienced was 8 days...but 4 is just ridiculous. Congrats!!

On the other hand, I give UF the award for my personal longest turnaround from complete to...well nothing.

I told them that you said to say "suck it, UF", so hopefully that should speed things along.

Uh oh. Did you forget the word "I'll" in front of that? because leaving it out changes the meaning entirely...

You think I'm getting accepted with a three day turnaround on actual merit? I majored in History of Science.

I got an email from one of my UF interviewers today giving me the good news...I was shocked, I mean the interview was last friday! of course since Im an anal premed I refuse to believe it until I have a hard copy of an acceptance letter in my hands...anyhow....yay!!

btw nice meeting you in person unfrozencave-...er.."man" haha. Funny that we knew each other from before, what a small world...congrats!!

I've met you, caveman...there's no way I could possibly think you got accepted on actual merit.

Juuuuust kidding. In our brief time spent together, I could tell you'll make a great doctor someday. Heck, I'll even let you be MY doctor! Unless you become an OB/GYN. Then that'd just be weird.

Now the real question...Miami or UF?

Indeed. A question for the ages, really.

Here is what I am thinking so far.

1. Already have a Caines foam Ibis head
2. Shetland Pony ranch in front of UF research building, huge plus
3. Already have established vigilante crime fighting unit, a closet full of white blazers, a pet alligator and a Ferrari in Miami.
4. Chick-fil-a in Shands, and down the street
5. Could live on beach
6. Could live on swamp
7. UF Gator Caduceus (plus)
8. UF mandatory glee club (minus)
9. I think I dated STAN in college- could be awkward

Draw: Own orange car.
Carte Blanche to rip on the other school to next year's interviewees

Anyone else in the grips of this, the ultimate Floridian quagmire?

Hey, congrats to you too! Maybe we'll be taking a few more classes together!

I think the pros and cons of Miami vs UF even out. If it were me, the tiebreaker would probably be the financial aid package and money in general.

Ya, hopefully I get to make that decision...still on waitlist at UF. Thats really great you guys got in so soon, congrats on that! It is a tough decision because they are both great schools.

I'm pretty sure I'm going against the grain on this one, but I'm definitely leaning towards miami.

arg...I've been complete at Miami since like Sept. 12, and I have yet to hear from them...what's going on? Status page says Im on the ranked list. I got accepted to UF, so I seriously doubt Im at the bottom of that list, unless UF and Miami use totally different criteria to judge candidates...

Maybe I should bug them some more...

TOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO FUNNY.

BUT I think I'd choose Canes if there was some financial aid involved because despite the mass # of hurricanes, Miami is way cooooooler then Gainesville. Oh and I like the curricula at Miami better then UF. UF seems to throw you straight into the deep end where as USF and UMiami seem to ease you in from the shallow end to the deep end. But at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either of them.
