I agree with Guju...location location location, my unfrozen friend. and congrats, hurricane95!

In other news, yesterday I received a letter from USF dated October 19 saying that I had two weeks to respond from the date of the letter to accept their offer of admission. Two weeks would be...today. And I got the letter yesterday. Yeah...I need to call/e-mail the admissions office about that...

Burnsy, that is the old "non-invite". "Do you want to come to my party? It's tonight. Oh, you're busy? Oh too bad"

Looks like med school is going to be a LOT like high school.

BUT I think I'd choose Canes if there was some financial aid involved because despite the mass # of hurricanes, Miami is way cooooooler then Gainesville. Oh and I like the curricula at Miami better then UF. UF seems to throw you straight into the deep end where as USF and UMiami seem to ease you in from the shallow end to the deep end. But at the end of the day, you can't go wrong with either of them.

Guju I'm with you on this one. It seems like people have a pretty organic reaction to UF or UM as well- love one, hate the other, that kind of thing. And location is a big factor. I grew up all over the universe, so I barely have roots anywhere, and clearly only have friends on the internet, but I love Miami. And I had a great time there as a post-bacc.
Plus, location has a good deal to do with your clinical exposure as well. I got the feeling at UF that they have this gigantic gorgeous medical center there, built solely for the purpose of academia. In miami, not so shiny, but patients come out of the woodwork because they need that place.
You're going to come out of both though equally well off, so it's a tough call. At least it's killing a day at work here.

You haven't seen gorgeous medical center until you see Mayo Clinic and some others. Shands is hardly gorgeous IMO. But it is still a great school with students who match exceedingly well. 🙂

What? I already mentioned the shetland pony farm and the chick-fil-a. Does your precious Mayo have those?

Thanks (cave)(wo)man, I appreciate it. When do you hit up Pittsburgh?

hey congrats unfrozencave"man" and Hurricane95 - I was in your Princeton Review class Unfrozen (the one that always talked to hurricane95). Yea I hear you.... I think UF was a great program, with outrageous board scores.. but Miami = better location IMO. I don't see myself spending four years (happily) in G'Ville.

Plus... Shands = empty when I toured.

It pretty much boils down to:
Academics = UF is probably better choice.
Clinical = UM without a doubt.

Let the flame war commence.

I will re-state that you do a great deal of rotations outside of the main "academic" hospital at Gainesville.

Shands Jacksonville will give you an urban clinical experience similar to what you would see at Jackson Memorial. It's in the roughest part of the city, it is the biggest Level I trauma center in the region, you treat state prisoners, and the ER is a complete zoo 🙂 You will do a lot there because there is a lot to be done.

You also have the VA in gainesville which again will give you your run-of-the-mill medicine cases that may or may not be lacking across the street at Shands UF.

Your clinical training coming out of UF is hands down as good as what you would get at UM. You have the benefit of an amazing academic medical center in Gainesville, A very busy VA in Gainesville, and a crazy overworked bursting-at-the-seams urban hospital in Jacksonville.

Word! Let me know how it goes and how you like it. The WISER center is pretty damn impressive. Simulator dummies that give birth? What will they think of next?!

In other news, I'm going to marry Ben Roethlisberger...or Sidney Crosby (Penguins). Whichever comes first.

Pitt is an awesome medical school.... Im here now as an intern and the med students are definitely sharp. UPMC is quite possibly one of the best/most underrated hospitals in the country.

Yep. The UM/UF debate could go on forever, as I'm sure it will.

yrodri- I remember you... Anyone *not* in our mcat class on here??

Holy crap! Are people expected to keep a straight face while a simulator dummy gives birth? Does it give birth to a smaller simulator dummy?

So, medgator, you think Pitt is underrated? I was actually wondering today if Pitt's high ranking was just maybe Pitt marketing job, and could be kind of fleeting.

Ya...I noticed this too. When we went through the ER there was only one patient. THat seemed kinda weird to me

Not going to say more on the UF vs. UM debate, but wanted to say something in response to Mrburns.......

From all that I have heard Medical school is indeed more like highschool in that you have a set schedule and people form clicks again. There are only 40-210 students in a given medical school class, depending on where you go. Most average about 120 +/- a few students. So I tend to think its going to be hard to get that big university feel of undergrad, and going to be more about finding your niche and group of friends within the class.

But most medical students I talk to say it is pretty much the same way. At our medical school, they even have lockers.

Last time I saw lockers was when I was in middle school and the first year of highschool before they renovated the school. 😛

Shands UF has only recently been changed to a level I trauma center and the patient load in the ER is not on par with what you would see in a big city (orlando, miami, jax etc.). This shouldn't surprise you given the size of gainesville (~150 K people, college town). It does get busy there at times (at night, after football games, after weekends). Until recently, the ER experience in gainesville wasn't nearly as acute. This is starting to change slowly, as they start to build up their trauma program.

It's unfortunate, but obviously understandable that you do not get to see the jacksonville facilities. It's the biggest city in FL landwise, and pretty populated (they hosted the super bowl?). To say that ER is chaotic is an understatement (The ER residency program there is ~top 15 overall in the country if you are interested in that down the road). As a 4th year, you have a choice as to where you would like to do ER your required ER rotation. Most people who want to have a good, intense ER month choose Jax. You also do 1 week of peds ER at either facility as well.

I was just mentioning before that I think the medical center affiliated with Pitt's medical school is phenomenal as they are ranked in the US News as one of the overall best medical centers (sharing the honor with Hopkins, Mayo, CCF, MGH etc.). They are ranked highly in GI, rads, Medical Oncology, Urology, ENT, Transplant Surgery, and some other areas I can't remember. A lot of people dont realize that when they hear "pittsburgh." I can't comment on the med school curriculum having never gone there. The med students I've interacted with here have been pretty sharp on the wards

Yay, two more interview invites in one day...

FINALLY! Umiami has summoned me, anyone else joining me this friday, 11/4? I'm excited about this one because I think it may very well be my first choice school, period. It should be fun. 😀

I'm also going to USF on the 14th.

Im pretty sure they can see when you get an acceptance somewhere else....B/C I remember hearing a story of REL from USF calling someone and notifying them of acceptances before they heard from that school. So ya......They must be in cahoots. 🙂

Haha I agree with you guju...although I was referring to unfrozencaveman's comment how USF was giving me the "non-invite invite" and I jokingly said that that reminded me of high school. But I agree, med school does seem to be a whole lot like high school. Everyone takes the same classes, it's more structured, you can get lockers, etc. Hopefully my classmates will be MUCH cooler, though...my high school classmates were mostly rich, annoying snobs.

Hi fellow floridians

I am joining you as one applying to a florida school. I just added FSU on my amcas list of schools

What do you think you have to do to be one of the "cool" kids? I need to get my ducks in a row. Burnsy, give me your lunch money.

Take my lunch money? That's not "cool"...that's just beastly. Which is synonymous with cool in some circles.

As far as I've come to understand it, being "cool" involves something to the effect of:
1) buying jeans that already have rips, tears, and holes in them
2) paying $75 for said jeans; add an extra $10 if its colors have faded
3) wearing hats that demonstrate your love for the truck-driving lifestyle
4)* you have an extensive flannel shirt collection
5) you wear 1+ polo shirts, all with the collars popped. Important note: there is no limit to the number of polos that can be worn at once; in fact, the more, the better
6) wearing a pink dress shirt with a loosened tie and khaki shorts is a regular occurrence

Am I missing anything?

Man, I am so un-hip.

I coach at a prep school in miami and I can tell you the following:

If you only spent $75 on jeans, you are a total loser. Flannel is out, but only due to climate considerations. Popped collar polo shirts are in, so is anything in pink. A cool car and absentee parents also still go a long way.

But will having a kegger at your parents' still cut the mustard in med school? Or is it all cool stethoscopes and whatnot.

Has anyone looked at the scholarship information for UM yet? I'm a little confused- are there need/merit/diversity scholarships rolled into one? Or can you just get one based on say, need, or just merit. Is there more to do after you fill out that one form on the website?

Oh Jesus christ, you two girls are hilarious! hahahahaha you had me laughing like an idiot in the library (Richter)... haha.

I say, anyone in this thread going to Miami should form a "click," and as soon as school starts, we'll stop admitting people to our group - only increasing the other student's desire to join our said group.

What form are you talking about unfrozen, can you give me the link?

I'm afraid holding a kegger will only go so far for you in med school. I went to a prep high school (which one do you coach at? Gulliver?), where whoever had the most expensive car, won. I have a feeling in med school it's going to be something like:

"What kind of stethoscope do you have?"
"You tell me first."
"I have the Littman Master Cardiology Black Edition. What do you have, a Magis Sprage-Rappaport? Hahaha!"
"Actually, I have a Littman 4000WS Electronic Stethoscope, biatch! Who paid $500+ for theirs?! Me, that's who! Haha, you're such a wannabe doctor."

...meanwhile, I'm going to be the MS1 listening for breath sounds with my ear pressed against the patient's chest saying "I saved $50 by not buying ANY stethoscope!"

In other news, I have WAY too much time on my hands at work, as evidenced by my extensive internet-based research on stethoscopes, as shown above.

lmao!!! Oh, and thanks for the info Unfrozen.

during the first two years its actually more like..... "We have a clinical skills session today? Damn, i needed those 3 hours to study for Cardio. Maybe I can get out of it." :meanie:

Really, 95% of us get the same stethoscope ---> Littman Cardiology III

UMiami works out a deal with a distributor for equipment discounts but this stethoscope is actually about $20 cheaper at Allheart.com, I think I paid $119 for it. Its the standard med student scope, really there are very few people with the crazy $$$ scopes and those that have them just about all say they got it as a present before starting school or something.

I think you're forgetting the overarching problem of then us being the people who met each other on the internet. Cool? Not really. But I embrace it.

Two, in a topically appropriate response, I got into a cold sweat thinking that maybe I should know more about stethoscopes than I do there for a second (like that dork who doesnt know the difference between a BMW, and an Audi, and on a related note, I coach at Ransom Everglades)

Along the same sociological path of the trucker hats (I'm so cool, I can wear something this hideous and you will love it), I'm going to tie three cups together with string, and start a new stethoscope trend. They will cost $400.

lol! Good stuff... well obviously, we omit the part where we formed our "click" on the internet.

The most embarassing part of it is that I made so much fun of my boyfriend this past summer for reading SDN and posting...and then I became even more obsessed than he is. I am such a hypocrite. but hey...realizing it is half the battle.

Seriously, check out the Littman 4000WS Electronic Stethoscope (http://www.stethoscope.com/index.cfm?event=ProductDetail&ProductID=112), it looks absolutely ridiculous. I already have a steth, but if I had all the money in the world I'd buy that one and make fun of all the "inferior" steths the other MS1's have.

What do you coach?

and I agree with ya, yrodri...any internet clique formations shall remain completely confidential. 🙂

And, water polo. I played in college, and now I'm old and terrible. So, those who can't do, teach. And those who can't teach, teach gym. That's pretty much that.

Back in early May when I started on my AMCAS, as an OOS resident, I could not apply to FSU COM. It wasn't even given as a selectable school. Now it appears, that I can add FSU to my list, if I wanted. Although I don't intend to apply, have there been OOS students at FSU interviews????

I think its a tad unfair considering in the early process, I was going to apply there, and I just assumed that FSU had established a restriction with AMCAS so that OOS students would not apply there and immediately be rejected. Kinda similar to the chances of an OOS student being accepted at Univ of Miss.

I recently added FSU, however I am claiming FL residency for purposes of FSU. I recently spoke with a school representative and my impression was that only FL residents were accepted. Maybe others know more since I am just learning about FSU. Best wishes.

I am under the impression that FSU only takes in state applicants. But your best bet would be to call the school admissions office. Good luck with that ... heres the number (850) 644-7904

At the moment, FSU only takes in state students. At least, this is my understanding. Don't take what I'm about to say next as fact, but my thinking is maybe it has something to do with the limited amount of seats available, since they are still building their way up 120 people. If it isn't that, then maybe there are some restrictions by the state due to the fact that it was founded on basis that it would create rural physicians in northern florida. Now these are just some thoughts, but not clear cut answers as to why they haven't taken out of state students in the past. However, as far as I've come to understand they haven't taken any out of state students in the past year. That is what the MSAR reports anyhow.

So wait a minute... what is it that we have to buy for med school?

A stethoscope.. and what else? How much can we expect to spend, just out of curiousity?
