umm...you're a very strange person, do you know that? But I like you anyway. You keeps things interesting for us normal people.
Dude, coming from you of all people, that is a real compliment. :meanie: 🙄 😛

I think that the FAU campus is supposed to have its own "open house" or "first look" or whatever they want to call it. Anyone hear anything about that? Where's RunnerMD?

Hi Q--I'm here! I haven't heard anything specifically about an open house at FAU. One of the M2s I spoke with said that he thought they had one last year but wasn't sure about this year. Anyway, I'm planning on visitng on Jan. 9 if anyone wants to join me. I might also swing down to the Miami campus on the 10th (haven't really thought about it yet) but I need to talk to Dr. Hinkley first.

Just a general question for you guys...I'm currently doing writing for a physician/author I know (some stuff for books, etc). He also lectures at alot of med schools and wants me to prepare quizzes and powerpoint presentations for a course he's teaching. Long story short--he told me he'd pay me whatever I wanted...so what should I say? Honestly, I'd do it for free just for the experience and to put it on my CV, but he's brought up the "paying" thing several times. What is a fair amount to ask?

I think it's totally fine to accept payment, but I wouldn't feel comfortable being the one to set the price. If you were willing to do it for free, then any money is a bonus, and I wouldn't want to be in a position where I accidentally asked for too much money. Just tell him you'd be willing to do it for whatever he think is appropriate. At least that's just my opinion.

Thanks Guju!!!! I knew two people who were interviewed and had taken the August MCAT and their scores were a bit higher. I hope to get an interview in the spring at least 😳

D***, I won't be able to come on the 9th. Will they even be back in school yet? We'd better check what the Miami schedule is, or you may find yourself walking around a deserted campus. 😉

What are you, a senior in college now? Ask for $15 per hour. I think that's a fair salary for someone with most of a BS, and it's probably still better-paying than most other jobs you could find.

Hi Q--I'm pretty sure they return on the 3rd and I was told that the first 2 weeks back would be the best time to visit (this is when they're doing PBL and aren't as stressed out). If you want to go on the Friday, the 13th (haha) I can go then also. Let me know!

Thanks for the advice re:the pay rate. Guess that will be my next project after I finish these scholarship essays---time to get pumped up about clinical geriatrics. Woohoo!

[edit]
What are you, a senior in college now?

I wish! I graduated in 04-spent last year traveling, volunteering, researching. This year, I work full time and have a completely non-medical office job.

They start back on the third? That would be perfect for me b/c I'm still on vacation. Otherwise I don't know when I'm going to have time off again for a while....I have to get cracking on getting myself graduated. 😛

Hmm...I can't go the week of the 3rd 🙁 Oh well, if you DO go, you can give me a general idea before I go. Where do you go to school?

Frany,

Don't completely sweat it, even if you get the last interview date possible. Why?? Depending on how much they like your app profile, they may even high wait list you where you are almost guaranteed in between late April to mid May post the date to drop multiple acceptances.

I had a few friends who were August testers. Some had about 26 MCAT scores but great GPAs and great ECs. One of them interviewed last day possible, and ended up waitlisted. He was waitlisted for the high tier waitlist, so he got off in mid May and is now an MS I at USF. So its still possible. Keep updating USF if you have anything new you think will significantly make a difference, such as new shadowing or volunteering things you'd like them to know about. G'luck.

Along the same lines as what Guju is talking about, does anyone know if interviewing late at a non-rolling school puts you at a disadvantage? I'm interviewing at a school on February 14, which I think is one of their last interview dates (I think they stop interviewing on the 17th). Then all decisions are made on/around Feb 28. What do you think? Not that I have much choice since that was the first interview date available, but I just figured I'd give myself an additional thing to stress about.

P.S. It makes me feel really uncomfortable when someone is next to me and repeatedly talks to him/herself, as happens everyday at work. Being the only two in the lab office area today makes it that much more awkward.

My feeling on this is that you are about to spontaneously combust. After all, thermodynamically, every molecule in your body would prefer to be carbon dioxide and water (ok, with some nitrous oxide in there too from the amino acids). Which makes me wonder endlessly, what are you still doing as you???

My body and its components are all about forming strong bonds as often as possible and in many different configurations. Wait, what are we talking about again?

Thanks again Guju. I know that with my MCAT I will not be accepted, but I am hoping for a waitlist because I know that overall I am a strong applicant. Also, two of my friends were waitlisted at USF, so I am hoping for the same. Thanks! 😀

I got a call from UF this morning, my interview is Feb. 3rd. I was an August MCATer...Anyone know how many people they interview/accept? I hope there are still some spots left...

I still haven't heard from Miami. I was waitlisted last year, and significantly improved my MCAT score, but still haven't heard from them. I wonder what's up.

Just got an emai from UF Here it is:

To: Interviewed applicants
From: Ira H. Gessner, M.D.
Chair, Medical Selection Committee

As we discussed when you interviewed with us, I write in order to update you
regarding our admissions process.

Thus far approximately 170 applicants interviewed with us and we accepted 68.
We have a long way to go before completing our next entering class.

We recognize the concern that many applicants maintain while waiting to receive
a definite decision from us. Be assured that we continue substantial interest
in your application.

If you have any questions about either your status or the University of Florida
College of Medicine please do not hesitate to contact us. Please accept our
best wishes for a happy holiday season.

Sincerely,

Good Luck at Your Interview!!! 🙂

Have you emailed Dr. Hinkley? He might be able to give you some info. Good luck w/ your interview; make sure to check out Stan while you're at UF. That has got to be one of the coolest things I've ever seen on an interview. 👍 The thing even blinks while it's awake.

Thanks for the info 1SwtWrld, it makes me feel a little better.

I had emailed Dr. Hinkley last month because I had not gotten an email confirming that my app was complete (It should have been complete when the August scores came out or very shortly after). He said that the last hurricane had slowed them down a bit, but that my app was complete.

My application has improved, MCAT went up 5 points, observed in the OR a couple of times, have two new publications. So I thought it would be a no brainer, since I was waitlisted last year, that I would get a quick interview this year. I guess that isn't how it works...

What do you think the email means?

Did anyone else recieve this email?

Ya, I just got it too. I guess its sent out to all the people who interviewed who are on the waitlist/hold list so people would stop calling them? 🙂 At the least its an email to show that they somewhat care, right? Not too sure of its significance but I'm not thinking too much of it.

Ok, I'm not kidding you...this is easily the coolest thing ever. I can't upload a file onto this forum, so go to this website http://www.jayzilla.com/ and download the video under December 8: Amazing!. The file is virus-free, and I promise it's the coolest thing ever...great song, too. Part of it turned into a Miller Lite commercial.

I really don't have anything significant to add to this thread. I hope you all have come to expect little more from me. I would have replied about the UF thing, but they've never particularly liked me.

...and all conversation on the Florida thread ceases.

Well, it's no mint M&Ms, but I recently got back from Cheesecake Factory and had their chocolate mousse cake (not cheesecake, just normal). And I can now barely breathe. I wish my stomach/small intestine would hurry digesting so I could finish it.

Haha--I know....this thread's been kinda quiet. Speaking of sweets/candies--is anyone else sick of them? I am a health food nut but have been sucked into the whole holiday food deal (never done this before!!!) and I feel disgusting. Last night, I was so happy that someone baked me a loaf of whole wheat bread--it was great. And when my Mom called to ask what I wanted for Christmas eve/day to eat, I emphatically said--"I want REAL food. I don't even want to see any junk food."

When I'm in Boston, the closest supermarket to my house is a Whole Foods, which, aside from having groceries, is constantly full of extremely attractive men. I have no idea why. So, needless to say, I've been eating extremely healthy of late.

I just ate a goats milk yogurt. It was pretty good.

Has anyone decided on one school definitively? Just curious...are you waiting on other schools? fin aid packages?

i asked Dr.Hinkley about a 2nd look at Miami, here's what he said:

Our plans aren't clear yet, but we will be holding an open house at Boca in the Spring as we have done for the last two years. It'll be open to all accepted and alternate listed applicants. We hope also to have at least one interview day scheduled for the FAU campus.Plans for a generalized Second Look day are progressing on the medical campus as well. It may be held in conjunction with the FAU open house. Details later.

No, Runner, I don't know yet where I'll be next year. Ask me today, I'll tell you one place. Ask me tomorrow, I'll tell you another. :meanie: What about you? Definitely Miami?

hey, i'm a third year at miami. everyone comes back on tuesday, january 3rd. the second years will be in PBL for the first two weeks after we get back. the first years will (i think - it's been a few years and they make little changes to the schedule each year so it may be different from when i took it) be in biostats/epi when we get back. hope that helps. good luck with your med school apps. --sp

So it is now approaching the end of december. I am graduating UF with pretty much a 4.0 and a 29 mcat and no interview from UF. Other people i know from classes have already gotten in and havent done as much as myself. I am beginning to get really frustrated with my school.

I feel ya, Turquoisey, and unfortunately I don't think I'm going to be getting an interview. Which is odd because I've gotten interviews at higher ranked schools. Oh well...how is the rest of your application process going?

The rest is really weird. I got into FSU but that is it so far. But i just had an interview at NYU-so i should find out a few weeks into january. I just hope that everything works out for me in the end with this whole thing, ya know. It is prob because I retook in August. My old score was a little lower.

Congratulations on getting into FSU and on the NYU interview. I remember talking to you several months ago, really stressed about your MCAT score if I recall. So I'm glad to see things worked out well for you. 😀

BTW, congrats on graduation as well as getting a better MCAT score, if you are the person I am thinking you are.

Oh and if it makes you feel better, even people with 4.0's and 35+'s have been known to be accepted to higher ranked schools then UF and yet put on hold at UF. So its probably going to be the toughest school to get into in Florida. miami and USF are still of hope though. Have you heard from either of those schools??

Thank you. I am that person-I remember talking to you before. I was so thrilled that I was able to increase my mcat.
Actually most schools I called with my update told me that they will re-review me in January. So I am just going to wait until then. I was really impressed with FSU though, but there arent too many research opportunities. So as of right now I am really liking NYU. But who knows...so many weird things have happen so far-maybe in the spring I'll get some more interviews.
I have met kids at UF that have gotten in already with low scores in the mid-twenties. It is just a crap shoot.

Turquoisey said:

I don't think it is a "crap shoot" - I think the people on the committess (all of them) are people and people will read your application and either like you or not. Different people are looking for different things from applicants.

Also, When you talk to those people, make sure to ask the "right" questions. You would be surprised who people know, where their parents work (shands), who their parents or even grandparents know, who they did research with, who their family friend knows, etc. I have found some out some very interesting things by asking questions... 😉

I know it is frustrating, it is for me too. Good luck!

Turquoisey said:

Me too! Before I went to interview at FSU, I assumed I wouldn't like it at all! But once I got there, it was awesome--definitely a pleasant suprise. Like you said though, the research opportunities are limited. Plus, I've heard it still has to work out some of the bugs that come along with a new program. So, although I think FSU is great, I'll probably end up at UM!

A huge part of those people getting in is who they know, as kleintje said. Unfortunately, thats the way things are.

Yeah- it is definitely who you know for UF's dental school-without question. I thought that med school would be a little different...its not looking that way eh?

Yep, this whole med school application thing is definitely a strange process...but at least you're in somewhere you like! That's all that matters. I can understand your frustration with UF, though; when I started applying I thought it'd be one of my better bets, but instead my supposed reaches have come through and not a peep from UF. But just think...would you really have wanted to spend another four years in Gainesville?

If this helps....UF has informed students, at interview day and at other meetings where they have come to speak, that they accpet about 60 % of those they interview. At the current time, they have accepted 30 % of those they interview and that is what they will do in the spring too. So, after the March deadline, if history repeats itself, they still have another 30 % to accept. A very large percent of those accpeted already will in reality not attend UF.

So true. There will be a lot of shuffling the first 3-4 months of the year especially. Also, I know people in my class at UF who got in with MCATs of 28 and 29, but they had other things in their profile that made them stand out (took a year off to do whatever, president of -----, research etc.). UF isn't just about the numbers. The people in my class came from a variety of backgrounds and walks of life.

Embarrassing. Truly.

Miami should be paying me to go there after that. And speaking of, has anyone heard from the scholarship committee?

They sent me a letter with admission letter, informing me I had been granted a partial-scholarship. I never applied for it or anything, though, so it really was a pleasant surprise.

Happy New Year everyone.

Ha, I seem to be the only fool who actually applied for it. 🙄 Of course, I can't really complain about the outcome, but still....I didn't know that we didn't really have to do the app. 😡 :meanie:
