So I'm going to withdraw from UF. The question is, do I do so in an e-mail or in a letter? Of the places I've withdrawn from pre-interview, I've done so in an e-mail; post-interview, in a letter. UF hasn't said a word to me since they said I was complete three months ago, but for some reason I feel like this one should be in a letter (but maybe that's because I'm going to say something about how it would have been nice had they ever contacted me, and I don't want them to e-mail me back).

What do you guys think?
I think you should not burn your bridges. You never know when or if you might want to go to UF in the future (residency, jobs, etc.) It might make you feel better temporarily to "tell them off," but will you really accomplish anything positive for yourself in the long run by doing this? If you are sure that you want to withdraw, write a polite letter or email to thank them for considering your application, but that you wish to withdraw it from further consideration. If you must complain, do it in private to your friends, or call/email Robyn to ask her when you can expect to hear something more.

Oh don't worry, I never had any intention of "telling them off." but I do think they should know I would have appreciated had they told me something...I have a friend in the same boat and he's actually more angry than I am. I'm a nice person, of course I'll thank them for consideration! I just think sometimes med schools feel like they can do whatever they want to do to applicants (string them along, not be nice on the phone, not be helpful, etc.) when applicants, on the other hand, have to be super polite all the time and make every med school feel like it's perfect and does nothing wrong.

But seriously, I would never tell anyone off. Except you, Q...you're an exception.

Why are you withdrawing from UF? Because you havn't heard anything? Did you decide on Miami?
I think if I decide to stay in-state I'd choose Miami over UF (granted I haven't actually seen UF, but I loved UM and prefer Miami over Gainesville).

I am right with you on that one. Granted the UF is a top notch school, I don't think I would like Gainesville, if I was given the choice between the two.

For me, I like the clinicals, the diversity of the patient populus, the bigger city feel, the ease you into the curricula set up of the Miami curricula better then UF.

That said, UF is not a bad choice either. But for my personality, I'd choose Miami any day.

Burns, UF giving you the cold shoulder is mindboggling. If anyone deserves to have a flaming bag of poo put on their doorstep, it would be them.

Dude, where have you been? I've been having to make fun of Q on this board and through PM and it's just not the same. Thanks for the kind words. What doorstep though...med school admissions office?

I like your new catch phrase. If Excellent, Smithers weren't so relevant, I'd put something like that, too.

Frankly I'm starting to get offended at my acceptance. Every reputable applicant I know at UF is on the post-interview hold or the pre-interview whatever-the-hell.

Sorry you had to spend a few days having your attacks on Q being rebuffed inarguably by emoticons. I had some "unpleasantness" to attend to in Philadelphia. The annual party thrown by my friends known at Fakesgiving, or, Fake Thanksgiving. Usually, this results in some horrendous story involving the usual debauchery to be passed on to the next Fakesgiving. Unfortunately, this was the year we all realized, we are old. This occurred to me while talking to my exboyfriends new WIFE, while hoping I would catch on fire, or something equally distracting.
I did see that Body Worlds exhibit though. It was cool.

Why in the world would you be offended? You should be mocking me for not even getting an interview there. I would! Ex-boyfriend's new wife? that's awkward. A guy I used to date just got engaged to the girl he left me for...and that was definitely strange (granted he was more of a rebound than anything anyway, but still. weird)

Yeah, this was one of those situations. But my theory is, if you're going to get the boot, it had better not be for some floozy. That way, at thanksgiving, I can stand around and listen to your tales of suburban living and look as smug as possible to maintain what is left of my dignity. This year the smugness also included a distinct medical air. I wore a stethoscope, in my ears, throughout the cocktails.

Excuse-em-moi, what am I, chopped liver? And I do not approve of my initial being taken in vain. 👎

P.S. :meanie: about the ex. My best friend from hs has a new girlfriend....emphasis on the GIRL. He's 30, she's 19 going on 9. 🙄 Well, as long as he's happy....

You know, for some reason I've only ever dated guys who were younger than me. Maybe this girlfriend of your hs buddy is onto something...Q, introduce me to some of your guy friends!

And caveman, I gotta say I think I'd rather the new girl be a floozy. That way I wouldn't have to constantly wonder "What did she have that I didn't"...I would already know the answer, which would be comprised of the letters DD.

I said reputable... and that's some nice french there. 😉

19?? That reminds me of a great story, peripherally related to medical school...

So at one of my interviews, I spent the night at a friend's from college and met his roommates, one of which was a 4th year medical student (and, a non-trad at that). So, in the middle of the night I am awoken by what is apparently this guy's trademark move- a wall shaking, what my friend called, the "strong finish". This woke me up several times during the night.
So the next morning, I run into the girl-half of the duo in the kitchen, and she's wishing me luck at the interview and stuff, and I ask her if she has any tips (I assume she is also a med student)... And she's like "oh, I don't go there, I just declared a poli sci major at..." Note, it's october, and this girl has just started her sophomore year. Nice work.

I was pretty tired. Meeting Mr. Snrub later just made the day go from bad to worse, that was for sure.

 You should have knocked and said, "excuse me, but I've got an interview tomorrow. Will you please be a little quieter?"

Ewwwwwww they were doing the horizontal hoochie with others in the apartment. If I was going to be like that with someone, I'd get my own place to do it.

Tell me about it. I wasn't feeling very Jesuit the next morning. I explained it all the G-town adcom, they were very understanding.

ohhhh, so THAT's why you looked so distracted throughout the entire g'town interview day! I don't blame you...waking up like that, my thoughts would probably be elsewhere, too.

I would have seriously done *something* to ruin the mood. Yeah, your friend would be pissed, but you'd get some sleep. :meanie:

Yeah I did. But the funny thing is, it wasn't until I moved to a college style apartment that I had encountered a situation like that. Luckily, that girl who was doing that stuff, left our apartment.

So was she your roommate in the sense that you shared a bedroom or did you have separate bedrooms? I mean, how awkward was it for the others living in the apartment?

This is a strange discussion. Then again, I think all of our discussions have been pretty...odd. Keep it up!

Seperate rooms, but she was in the room right next to mine. So you could hear through the walls.

Yeah, roommates are a tricky situation. Someone's always walking in on someone else.

Now the tough question...which would be more awkward? Your parents walking in on you, or you walking in on your parents?

Man, I gotta find better things to do at work.

What if it were your GRANDparents? 😱

Haha oh man, brilliant!

Ok the four options are:
a) get walked in on by parents
b) get walked in on by grandparents
c) walk in on parents
d) walk in on grandparents

We're assuming you are outside the age of "grounding" and that your grandparents are pretty hip and accepting.

Q, you go first since you insisted on including grandparents in the mix.

In any of these situations, the walked-in-on should bust out the infallible, "we were just rehersing a play"

Well, I'm going to have to go with D. Because you see, all four of my grandparents have been DEAD for several years, some for decades. 🙁 On the other hand, it *would* be nice to know that carnal pleasures exist beyond the grave, but still.... :barf:

How on earth did our FL thread degenerate into this ridiculous crap anyway? 🙄 Anyone want to actually talk about FLORIDA???

Ridiculous crap? This is a very deep question! I'm a philosophy major, for God's sake!

But to answer your question, I have no idea. It seems that talking about FL schools interrupts our strange, random discussions more than vice versa. Blame it on guju!

I'll talk about Florida. Whats with this weather? Am I actually going to have to dig my only jacket out from the bottom of my closet? Its freezing outside!

ya no kidding... at least its sunny 👍

At my Miami interview, they mentioned that UF is raising its tuition by 12% (I think) every year, making it such that in four years, UF will be pricier than UM. Anyone else get this bit of propoganda?

Yes. I don't believe it though. Do you really think that Miami's tution is going to stay constant over the next four years?

Also, I could be wrong but I thought UF stated on interview day that the tuition you come in with is locked for 4 years while you're a student. Anybody else remember hearing this?

I also don't think this is going to be the case. UF is a public school and gets far more funds from the state than UM does. I don't think it would ever be allowed that the state would highly fund a public school that's more expensive than a private.

However, with scholarship/grant money available, I don't think UM would actually be THAT much more expensive than UF. At least not in tuition...I can't really speak for the cost of living. But I plan on living on the streets anyway, so I guess cost of living doesn't really apply to me.

Ha ha, you could EARN some money on the streets.

I think that Miami and FL are so close together cost-wise (especially if you get the partial scholarship at Miami) that money is not a huge issue to use for deciding between the two. It's not like one costs $40k per year and the other costs $20k. Assuming you get the $10k scholarship, you're talking about a difference of one or two thousand dollars per year. And I agree that COL is going to be significantly less in Gainesville, so UF is probably STILL cheaper overall when everything is said and done. But again, it's such a minor difference that you should just pick whichever school you like better.

QofQuimica said:

They said that UM's tuition's hikes are locked at something like 3%, and even with increases, UF would still surpass it. It barely even applies to us considering it's too far down the road, but I found it hard to believe too. On the other hand, they wouldnt out and out lie about something like that either.

QofQuimica said:
Ha ha, you could EARN some money on the streets.
And just how do you think I paid for all my secondaries?

I did read a statistic that said something like 85% of UF students who qualified for financial aid received scholarship/grant money in addition to loans in 2004. Is that right? That's really high, but I have no idea how much the average grant was. That would make the tuition discrepency between the two even more, but I still don't think it's enough to choose UF over UM if you REALLY liked UM a lot more. As my lab PI said, stretched out over the decades of your practice, $100,000 in loans won't mean that much; even less so if you're talking about saving less than $10K/yr going to UF vs. UM.

On mee???????????? I'm innocent. Its all on you on this one buddy!!!!!!!! 😀

And to answer your question: I think all of the above would be awkward. But for some reason the thought of the old peoples doing it (i.e. parents and grandparents is more awkward).

Now back to Florida. Hopefully, we'll get some new peoples to help add to this thread, since August MCATers will be joining the mix of interviewees soon.

On a side note: My friend finds out tomorrow whether they get accepted to USF. I'm sooooooo praying for him.

Seems like a lot of in-state applicants are interviewing and getting accepted at these FL schools.

How are the OOS applicants faring so far?

I'm still on the ranked list at UM and didn't apply to the other FL schools..

I think there were a couple of out of staters on here earlier who said they got interviews at Miami. I know USF doesn't take many out of staters as so is true with FSU. Don't really know about UF.
