I can't find these M&Ms ANYWHERE! Are they banned from Tampa?!?!

I'm pretty sure I cleaned out the whole city. Check again in a couple weeks, assuming I don't hijack the Publix truck first...

So, since I envision myself in the same situation a couple years from now, I need to ask something to those who were accepted to both UF and UM and are leaning to or have already chosen UM over UF.

I know a big plus to UM over UF is the location. However, I'd like to take that out of the equation. I'm from Miami, but I've also lived in a small town in Central Florida for a few years and I don't mind living in a place like Gainesville. So, besides location, what drew you to like UM over UF so much?

So, I wouldn't actually mind *living* in Gainesville-- in fact, I think it would be kind of fun, but my concern with UF is related to its location in terms of its clinical experience. I know that UF students on here will (and have, pages and pages ago when we were still on point and not discussing Burns' serious mental problems) tell you that from a medical student perspective, what you'll see at shands (and jacksonville) and jackson will be the same thing. I'm having a hard time believing it-- unfounded or not. From a clinical perspective, I just want to be in the thick of things, and I felt very caught up in the excitement of Jackson. I think logically, I would come out of both the same doctor, but at UM, I might have a little more fun doing it (on the academic side of things).

Still up in the air though. It's a tough call.

Ok so I haven't applied yet, but I have looked at the two schools pretty closely and seen differences in terms of curriculum.

UF, from what I can see, follows a more traditional curriculum. They throw you straight into the deep end from day one, leading you straight into the hardest classes you will encounter in MS I year. They don't seem to give much room for time to adjust to medical school.

USF and UMiami, however, both give the feeling of slowly bringing you into the program. Furthermore, as pointed out above, I would think the diversity of clinical experience would be greater at the other two schools.

UF seems to be more for the person who is research oriented or more of the typical academic institutionalized hospital where you see a lot of the rare cases. However, it does not seem to have a lot more of the regular day to day things that you see at your typical county hospital. Just to clarify, I'm not saying that won't get a good clinical education there. Just that it doesn't seem to be as diverse. I'm sure you'll do great wherever you choose to go to. One final point is the atmosphere and students. I can't speak on UF students since I've not interviewed, but I've heard many people say the student atmosphere is very very different from the feel of the student atmosphere at USF or Miami.

That said, pick which school you feel comfortable with most. Different people have different preferences based on their personality, style of learning, career goals, and so forth.

I am not sure that the fact that gainesville is a small town is really the problem with living in gainesville....I think it is more the fact that it has 40,000 undergrads...which result in an environment dominated by 18-22 year olds and that can greatly influence the feel of the city.

My favorite time in gainesville is over the summer - then it's perfect.

I know med school will leave little time to go out and socialize, but when the time comes....just be prepared.

When your four years are up, I am willing to bet you will be ready to leave. 🙂 But then my brother stayed here for 11 years...so maybe not. 😀

My advice, come to g'ville and spend some time here - if location is important to you. I know the city pretty well, and I can tell you what i think the pros and cons are.

On a slightly different note, the second years at UF have class until the 23 of Dec. 😱

For me the biggest factor is going to be cost. And I agree with what Kleintje said about Gainesville being full of college kids. I really don't love the idea of living in a college town at my age.

hey does anyone know what the deal is for OOS Univ of Miami? read some stuff about some "ranked list" but i was complete late august, august mcater, have not heard anything from them...called and they said that i have not been reviewed yet......

Don't know how that happened because as far as Mr. Larkin has told us, there are no scholarships at USF.

REL,

If you see this message could you comment on whether or not USF has scholarships??? If there are scholarships, could you comment on what is required to obtain them for Dr.Mike??

Thanks

Guju, I hope I didnt say there were no scholarships at USF. What I believe that I have said is that there are few scholarships at state schools in Florida, especially at USF in the first year. There are precious few at USF, but there is a committee that meets to make some awards. I am not a part of that group and do not know how decisions are made etc. etc.

Oh ok thanks for the clarification. I think I misunderstood something you said some time back.

So how do people find out about such information???????????????

As I woke up this morning and was greeted by 49 deg. weather here in Tampa, I found another reason I'm looking forward to UM/FAU--average low temperature in Boca for Dec. = 61 deg 🙂

Hahaha! I was just thinking this past weekend--wow, I sure am glad I'm going to a school in FL. What was I thinking applying to places in Chicago and Boston?!?!?!

Has anyone had any interviews at FSU? I've been complete there for several months, yet haven't heard anything at all. Though my scores are nothing impressive they are significantly higher than what their average was quoted on their website. I also have a good deal of solid of EC's. I guess my basic question is, do they have a tendency to interview later on in the process i.e. January -. Thanks.

I was complete in August and interviewed in October. I think they are very big on applying early.

Caveman--I'm sorry! That's why you should go to UM!

Ok, so I just got back from Target where I was looking for these STUPID Mint M&Ms and they didn't have any. However, I discovered a number of other interesting candies with flavor modifications, such as the York Peppermint Pattie TRUFFLE and the Orange and Cream Kit Kat (this has the potential to be really gross). I also came across a candy bar called Overload, which is like a combination of candies (e.g. reeses peanut butter cup with m&ms on top, etc).

In other news, I saw a new FL license plate (as if we don't have enough varieties) as I was leaving Target. This one read "Discover Florida's Oceans." <--I didn't realize we had multiple oceans here in Florida.

Ok, now that I've made myself sound like a huge dork, I'm gonna get going.

OOh! What a great potential diversion. I am obsessed with checking out people's florida license plates. We have so many. Which one do you have?

I have one that says something like "Save the Coral Reefs" or somesuch. I take an odd amount of pride in it.

I have the Breast Cancer one. When I got it, it seemed like NOONE had it, and then all of a sudden this year I feel like its everywhere!

Actually, when I got my license plate, I was excited/thought it was a good omen that "DR" was in my sequence of letters/numbers. I'm such a nerd!

I never got an application complete (their website probably still says I havent sent in my letters of rec) However, all my stuff was sent in mid august. Mid september I received an interview invite. Interviewed 9/30. I called them up 10/28 and they said I was accepted. Call them up and see whats goin on with your application. If you dont have this website heres a link

My plate number is RAP 6X, which everyone assumes is a vanity plate, and I love rap. I do like rap. But not enough to get a vanity plate.

No, if you had a vanity plate, it would obviously be CAVEMAN or perhaps NOTA DUDE

Anyone remember the Seinfeld episode where Kramer gets some protologist's vanity plate, ASSMAN? Hilarious! The possibilities are also endless if I really do end up becoming an OB/GYN...

I am working on being complete, hopefully I will be complete by end of the year. So I am wondering if they tend to interview late as well.

I called them earlier today and they said they will be reviewing it at the beginning of next year... After the holidays, I'm sure. Hope they are still interviewing as they are my last hope 🙁

Wow, that has to be one of the grossest things I've ever heard of. Speaking of mint M&Ms, Q made me buy her her own bag (in addition to the one I obviously had to buy for myself) only for her to eat like two pieces total. Now I'm eating her bag in addition to my own and in addition to the chocolates she brought me. Well...if there's a time to get really fat, I suppose winter would be it.

Was anyone else a David the Gnome fan?

In Japan they have Green Tea kit kats, and some other weird ones. Anyway, people love kit kats, the world over. I have done extensive research.

It would only make sense. Why else if you have been complete for a while would they review it in jan?

What I am wondering though, will we then be applying for waitlist spots? does anyone know?

anyone interviewed that late in previous years and get accepted?

Are these individual bags like you would find near the cash register or big bags that you'd find in the candy aisle?

And yes, I was a David the Gnome fan (I had to look it up in Wikipedia and on yahoo to confirm). I think it came on the Disney channel or something...

And I also found this cool website while looking for David the Gnome stuff http://www.retrojunk.com/ You've gotta check out the Kids Incorporated Intro. I LOVED that show!

PS--GREEN TEA kit kats??? I can't even begin to imagine what that would taste like.

Caveman and I were talking about an office gnome and it got me thinking about David the Gnome, one of the greatest shows of all time. And it was on Nickelodeon.

The mint M&M's you seek are big bags located in the candy aisle. But they're usually in the Holiday candy section of the aisle, not next to the regular M&Ms. Publix should definitely have them.

Just stopped by Publix on the way home and they don't carry them! Grrr! Oh well--I will check the one close to work tomorrow. I am on a misson now!

David the Gnome was one of the awesomest tv shows in the history of children's tv. I think all the great cartoons are no longer on. The new kiddy shows suck.

Amen to that. This is a topic that me and Burns have discussed at great length and come to agreement on. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Ducktales, Talespin, Chip and Dale's Rescue Rangers, the list goes on.

Also GI Joe, which was awesome because it showed me how the military SHOULD be run, where nobody ever dies, they just karate-chop bad guys into unconsciousness for about 30min. Plus, it always had that great public service announcement at the end. Now you know, and knowing is half the battle. I wonder what the other half is...

You HAVE to check out that website www.retrojunk.com

It has video intros of all the shows you mentioned. Last night, I saw the intro to Pinwheel (waaaaay old school), Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Perfect Strangers, etc. It brought back so many memories.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles was an incredible show. Whoever came up with the concept of huge turtles that like pizza and are led by an enormous, old, and martial arts master rat, who combine forces with a reporter they often have to save, and who defeat an evil man who has a rhinoceros and a hippopotamus as accomplices is a GENIUS. I also was a big fan of Captain Planet. He was hot, too.

And you're right, guju...the new kids shows suck. Same with Disney movies...they don't have classics like The Little Mermaid, Aladdin, and Robin Hood (one of my all-time favorite movies) anymore, and it's sad.

I agree! I hate to sound like some "old-timer," but I just can't get on board with this new animation. While I do think its cool, it just lacks that "Disney" feeling. I'm also a big fan of Robin Hood--but I think my personal fave is Sleeping Beauty!!! What about everyone else?

[edit] Just got back from looking for these d@mn mint M&Ms and still could not find them at another publix or at walgreens. I did however find two new varieties:

Breast Cancer Awareness M&Ms (I promise I am not making this up)
Holiday Message M&Ms (with things like "Ho Ho Ho" written on each M&M)

I found some at Target this year. Good Luck!

For all those searching for the mint M&M's (Runner), I'm afraid we've hyped them up a bit too much and you may be disappointed. More than being amazingly good, they're as addictive as crack and the more you eat them the more you want. I think Q was disappointed in them because she thought they'd be some incredible marvel of chocolate, mint, and an outer candy shell, when the reality is you need to eat a few handfuls before you can fully appreciate them. Consider yourself warned.

I don't like Little Merrmaid because they completely distort the REAL Christian Hans Anderson story, making the story less complex and more stupid.

The Real Little Mermaid story is better because its more complex since it doesn't have a happy ever after ending.

However, the true Disney stuff is still the Mickey Mouse, Mini Mouse sort of stuff. That stufff has been lacking for a long time.

I used to like Nickelodean shows like Story Time, Little Bits, The Koalas, and so forth.

I also loved Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Voltrons, and He-man.

Oh and then there was Rainbow bright and Carebears.

Ok I'm going off on a tangent.

Its funny cuz all I used to do was watch tv, now I barely turn it on.

That was a good film, though not quite as classic as Dr. Seuss' A Cat in the Ass. Every kid's favorite.

After searching and searching, I have finally found the Mint M&Ms!!!

And all I can say is WOW :wow: --they totally exceeded my expectations! These are the best invention ever!

Yay, success!! I don't know how they could have exceeded your expectations considering we on the Florida thread hyped them up to be some sort of oral miracle, but I'm glad! Just be careful, as there is a good chance of becoming addicted. Be wary of such telltale symptoms as:
-repetitive stress injuries to the hand, forearm, and jaw from repeatedly going from bag to mouth
-eating them when you're not hungry
-eating them when you're nauseous, then throwing up so as to make more room in your stomach
-constant blood sugar levels >300
-violent shaking, headaches, and homicidal irritability after 20 minutes of abstinence
-a lack of desire to do anything productive besides buy more mint M&Ms
-and last but perhaps most dangerous, you compulsively post on SDN about mint M&Ms

I'm in the process of developing a mint M&Ms patch. But I fear it is already too late...
