I heard the East Coast is supposed to have some good beaches, like near Melbourne. That's someone was telling me yesterday. They said the waves are lot better over there then places like Clear water or St. Pete.

Hey Runner...referring to question #2....I pondered the SAME thing while sitting in front of a red light by the 5/3 Bank!! However, I've been traveling so much I don't remember what city it was in...what city did you see it in?

I know they have them somewhere in Tampa. Today, however, my mind was focused on 5/3 bank b/c I literally heard 3 commercials for 5/3 on my 25 min commute to work. It was ridiculous--I specifically would NOT bank with them, simply because they haven't realize that 5/3 does not = fifth third--and if they're bad with numbers, I don't want my money there!

So, I just found a picture I drew in Paint a few months ago while I was bored at work. I really don't know what the heck I was thinking, but boredom makes you do strange strange things. I'm guessing this was circa page 40...I'm on the ground, Q is yelling at me, and unfrozencaveman is the blonde. Next time I'll try to fit more people in, although I think I speak for all of us when I say hopefully there won't be a "next time."

Playa Linda is AMAZING!!!... its a nationally protected sea shore right near cape canaveral... the only thing you can see is the shuttle launch pad. great surfing too.. there's a nudie beach at like pier 9 though so watch out. If you're not from fla there's a surf shop on the other side of the bridge that will rent boards out for pretty cheap if you dont want to travel with your own board

Folks...sorry to move this discussion back towards "interviews" at "florida schools," but I wanted to ask some advice from the wise. So, I just got a call from FSU this morning about an interview. The thing is - I am already accepted at U Miami. Is it all worth it for me to take a day off and travel the 600 some miles (I'm currently in DC) to Tallahassee to interview at FSU. I am thinking no, but I wanted to ask y'all in case there is something amazing about FSU that I'm missing. Thanks for the advice folks.

I'm thinking no also. Miami is the better school (however I think FSU will be great once it has some more time to establish itself). As for now, I think you should save your time and money. Stick with the Miami acceptance. Although, FSU and in-state tuition is a big perk.

Unless you are really strapped for cash, then I would make the interview. I expected to HATE FSU, but I absolutely loved it. Even though I'm 90% sure I will attend UM, FSU does have some perks (in-state tuition esp!). As many others have mentioned in this thread, FSU is a pleasant suprise. I would def check it out.

Tigerstang, to answer your question: no.

"I only got two things in this world meng', my balls and my word, and I don't break any of dem' for anyone."

So who is going to Miami "for sure" then?

“I remember that one fateful day when Coach took me aside. I knew what was coming. "You don't have to tell me," I said. "I'm off the team, aren't I?" "Well," said Coach, "you never were really ON the team. You made that uniform you're wearing out of rags and towels, and your helmet is a toy space helmet. You show up at practice and then either steal the ball and make us chase you to get it back, or you try to tackle people at inappropriate times." It was all true what he was saying. And yet, I thought something is brewing inside the head of this Coach. He sees something in me, some kind of raw talent that he can mold. But that's when I felt the handcuffs go on.”

I think you should check it out for comparison.. pretty much everyone I've heard from (including myself) has been blown away by what they've seen. It all depends if being out of town for a day is going to hurt you. Miami is almost double in tuition; at least you'll feel confident with your decision to pay more for miami if in the end you do choose um.

Double??? I remember it only being like 12k/year. Am I missing something here?

hehe, well here are more specific tuition numbers over 4 years
(allows 4% annual increase for inflation)

FSU:
First Year-$18,273.41
Second Year-$19,004.34
Third Year- $19,764.52
Fourth Year- $20,555.10

Total Cost=$77,597.37 tuition (estimated)

UM:
First Year- 31,009.48
Second Year-$32,249.86
Third Year-$33,539.85
Fourth Year-$34,881.44

Total Cost=$131,680.63 tuition (estimated)

Thanks for the advice y'all...I decided not to go so hopefully it opens up an interview spot for someone else. Best of luck!

Fine Choice Tiger, Fine Choice. Don't go unless you're seriously considering it.. and if you have been accepted into much better schools, that will bode much better for your residency spot...

Hmm...I think that's a little misleading in the sense that those figures make it appear that its nearly 2x as much to attend UM. If you look at the freshman budget for UM v. FSU, the 12k diff looks like a much smaller percentage.

UM
Tuition $29,298
Fees $ 550
Books and Supplies $ 4,405
Room and Board $11,300
Transportation $ 3,523
Personal $ 3,689
Total $52,765

FSU
Tuition $17,554.87
Books & Supplies $1,786.50
Room & Board $14,430.70
Transportation $2,509.50
Personal $4,638.10
Total $40,919.67

Bottom line...most of us are going to be in serious debt, no matter where we go (or at least that's what I keep telling myself lol)

None of you are factoring in the added cost of the apartment on south beach, the flashy convertible, and of course the ridiculously expensive beers. 😛

Does anybody know when UM stops handing out interviews/ if they've filled their class?

definitely true

Definitely true..the west coast of Florida is more like a lake, but with pretty sand! Not sure about this, but I think Cocoa Beach has the best waves on the east coast. I know that they are better than ours in Jacksonville.

I heard.. or actually, read from a reputable source, that the east coast of Florida has dangerous algae blooms which secrete toxic, paralyzing molecules.

I Don't know, thats what I read.

Are you sure it was a book? Are you sure it wasn't... nothing?

Yeah Cocoa beach is the best place to surf- right by Taco City on A1A. And Taco City isnt too bad either.

I always enjoyed Sebastian Inlet, it gets pretty crowded though so you kind of have to fight for waves, but I think that makes it kinda of fun. I think it's by far the best spot on the east coast of Florida, I heard it got kind of lame after last years hurricanes... anybody know?

Hey guys: How long does an interview at UF typically last?

Also: I think the waves are still pretty good. Gotta go to the good spots.

Damn...that's why I can't move my legs anymore! No seriously, I've lived on the east coast my entire life and have never seen a bloom nor heard of them. Not that I'm saying it can't be true.

UF lasts from 9 am till 5 pm.

It is a full day... the interviews themselves are usually from:

1-2, then 3-4

Its pretty intense. But my interviewers were great people, and there were not questions from left field - aside from the usual "what age did you lose your viginity?" one.

My answer of "2 minutes from now" went over extremely well

Tha algal blooms are found on the west coast too--they form whats known as red tide, because the algae cause respiratory problems in marine animals, and the entire shoreline ends up infested with dead, washed up fish. Smells wonderful. Its been happening all over southwest florida for years--from Sarasota to Naples.

You people are totally sick. I admire that in a thread of Floridians. Ok, I'm back. If you don't like that, you can blame Burnsie. She said I had to come back.

Turquoisey, I'm assuming you have a UF interview, and if so, good luck! My best interviews anywhere were at UF, and I think it's a great school.

I recently interviewed at USF and I really loved it. Is anyone for sure going there?

I knew we had red tide, though again...never seen it. But I didn't know it had "paralyzing molecules" as yrodi referred to.

I never thought the Florida thread conversations could get any stranger than they used to be, but I was wrong.

I'm going to create a band called Red Tide.

nice Mr Burns, can I be the guitarist in it?

Red Tide's First Hit Single: I can't move my legs...

"East Coast surfing... [intro solo]
Till I came across red algae, and in I dove...
I keep wanting to move...
But the ACh receptors are being blocked by toxin...
And now I can't move...."

[fade to chorus]
A,B,B,C, B

Oh God, I am so bored. LoL Go Canes.

anyone going to Miami's "2nd look" weekend at the Boca campus?

That song has a phat beat, yrodri, and I'm not just saying that because I'm the drummer. but my personal favorite is our European single: "Red Algae in your Face!"

"East coast, West coast,
You ain't safe no place,
Your ass is toast,
Cause there's RED ALGAE IN YOUR FACE!"

*commence gratuitous use of expletives followed by crowd surfing and unnecessary equipment destroying*

From now on, I will only respond to my stage name: Barbara Walters.

LMAO!!!!!!! @ MR Burns

Omg, I started laughing out loud in my 'biology of aging" class - the professor believed that senescence is a humorous topic...

You honestly have to be one of the funniest people I have met lol.

"This itching has become my bane...
Scratch till I irritate my veins...
Cause there is READ ALGAE ON MY FACE!!!"

LMAO and Burns and Hustler! Ya know, anyone that is OOS and trying to get into a Florida school is going to see this thread and think WTF is wrong with those people down there?!?! 😛

Wow I really haven't been on SDN much in awhile, cuz I didn't even know the funny Burnsie changed her avatar.

Carry on..

I don't know if there's anyone from SDN who is going there for absolute sure but I do know several of the people who'll be there in the future. I agree with you that USF is a great school and has an awesome diversity in clinical sites and affiliations from what I've seen as an undergrad down here, who has observed many of the physicians and been around many of the clinical sites due to volunteering and what not.

Oh, you and Q are just jealous of my ripped body. And of the way I carry a javelin with such grace and power.

If anyone else wants to contribute sick Red Tide lyrics, feel free.

Ummm...red tide only causes respiratory distress in fish. So unless you are singing to fish, or about fish, or recreating the experience of fish through the majesty of song...I don't get it.

Although its cool if thats what you're into...everyone has their personal fetish. You would be big in Germany. They are into some sick **** over there.

Whoa what exactly happened here???

I think they are joking around. You'll find MrBurns has a very crazy sense of humor. She generally tends to make crazy statements about anything and everything, but its what makes me come back to this thread.

Whooaaa....I sense a little hostility.

I'm not jealous, I'm just in love with you. Is that such a crime?

I'm too drained to come up with lyrics right now, but next week I'll oblige. I want to be the lead singer. And I think my singing is exactly right for a band called The Red Tide. :meanie:
